President's Message January 2013 Happy New Year to all LPS members!! I am looking forward to a great year!
With the new year, I would like to re-emphasize the purpose and goals of the Louisiana Photographic Society.
LPS Constitution: ARTICLE II: PURPOSES SECTION 1: The general purposes of this organization shall be to promote learning about photography, provide a forum for the discussion of photographic concepts and exhibition of photographs. We should keep these purposes and goals in mind in every endeavor we embark upon. Above all, we should strive to make the club activities fun for all who want to participate. In a club with as many members as we have, there will always be others who don't share your views. There will always be personality conflicts. We should all recognize this and make sure that these differences don't impact our purpose of learning, teaching, and enjoying photography. Your elected officers will always attempt to make decisions that are best for all members, but we recognize that at times we have to make hard decisions that not everyone will agree with. When you pay your annual dues, you have the right to voice your opinion on all matters involving the club. I would ask that you voice those opinions to me privately and trust me to make the necessary decisions (I will consult with the Executive Board on these matters if needed). If you have suggestions for improving any aspect of the club activities, please let me know. Familiarize yourself with the LPS Constitution and By-Laws (they are on our LPS website under FAQ tab). These will answer most of the questions you may have about how the club operates. I hope that we can all enjoy the new year and advance all of our skills related to photography.

(We have been ask to leave the exhibit up thru March) To participate in exhibits and monthly competitions, you must be a member of LPS in good standing. Membership dues of $25 are payable in January of each year. The treasurer will be at the hanging to collect your 2013 dues!
Additional information
1. Photos should be framed; mounting and matting is preferred. Please make sure all large photos are mounted and have no creases or wrinkles.
2. Your name, title of photo, price and your phone num-ber should be securely attached to the back of your frame.
3. All photos should have wire on the back of the frame in order to properly hang them. The best position for the wire is 1/3 from the top of the frame.
4. If your photo is for sale include the price as it is dis-played plus any percentage the gallery may charge. NFS should be on the back and label if you do not wish to sell your work.
5. All photos should be signed in on the sheet provided at the exhibit.
6. It is your responsibility to transport your own photos to and from the exhibit or arrange for a buddy bring or pick up your work.
7. All subject matter should be family friendly and in good taste.
8. We reserve the right to refuse any photo for any rea-son.
9. Neither LPS nor the Library or Gallery is responsible for lost or damaged works; hang at your own risk.

The medium for the January 2013 monthly competition will be Digital Projection. There is no theme.
LPS Monthly Competitions are open to LPS members, who may submit two images each month.

The Historic New Orleans Collection is hosting an exhibition of photographs by Charles Martin. For eight years, Martin has documented the centuries-old tobacco-growing traditions of St. James Parish, in southeast Louisiana. The area is the only place in the world that harvests perique, prized by connoisseurs as the strongest and most flavorful of tobacco varietals. The labor-intensive cultivation process dates to the early 19th century, and its rituals have descended as occupational folklore through a handful of local families, including Martin’s.
The exhibition was presented in conjunction with PhotoNOLA 2012. Perique: Photographs by Charles Martin is on view at The Collection’s Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres St., through Saturday, February 2, 2013. The gallery is open Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, and admission is free. Details available at www.photonola.org.

In the Pictorial category, anything goes. It is ok to manipulate the image. Realism is not a requirement. Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict observations from all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archaeology, in such fashion that a well informed person will be able to identify the subject material and to certify to its honest presentation. The story telling value of a Nature photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality. Human elements shall not be present unless those human elements enhance the nature story. Photographers may perform any enhancements and modifications that improve the presentation of the image that could have been done at the time the image was taken but that does not change the truth of the original nature story. Cropping and horizontal flipping (equivalent to reversing a slide) are acceptable modifications. No elements may be moved, cloned, added, deleted, rearranged, combined or changed in any way that affects the integrity of the image content. Resizing, cropping, selective lightening or darkening, and restoration of original color of the scene are acceptable. No special effect filters that alter the truthful presentation of the subject may be

utilized, either during or after image creation and any sharpening must appear natural. Competing club rules for Prints 1. Pictorial, Nature, and Photojournalism prints must
be no larger than 16”x 20”, either mounted or un-mounted. For a mounted print, the mounting board should be no larger than 20”x 24”. There is no minimum size. Prints may be printed commercially or self printed.
2. Each print must be identified with a title, a number (1, 2, 3, or 4), the maker’s name, and the name of the club.
3. The number on the image must correspond with the number listed on the Entry Form, which must accompany each club’s entry.
The Louisiana Photographic Society is a member of the Gulf States Camera Club Convention along with 35 clubs from Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. This regional competition has a competition for prints and digital images for most months in the year.
February’s GSCCC competition category for prints is Pictorial (color and black & white ) and for digital the category is Nature. The requirements are listed below. Our club recently judged a competition and we know our members have photographs worthy of entering. Please bring your prints to the meeting his month. Theresa Low will collect your prints. Gulf States Camera Club Council 2013 Convention
Jackson, MS | April 25 - 28 2013
The Gulf States Camera Club Council's 2013 convention is being held on April 25-28 in Jackson, Mississippi. Join us for great photography and the unrivaled hospitality that the historic city of Jackson offers. In addition to participating in a variety of photo tours in Jackson and its surrounding areas, our line-up of speakers, workshops, and sponsors will bring you the latest in photographic training, technique, and gear. Plan to join us for a weekend filled with photography and good times.
Speakers include: Ed Heaton who is a published and award-winning professional photographer and educator residing in Chester County, Pennsylvania who specializes in landscape, nature and travel photography. For close to a decade, Ed has conducted workshops, seminars, and classes on an ongoing basis. Ed’s passion for the outdoors is truly reflected in his photography. Beneath the meditative solitude of his images lie an extraordinary awareness of composition and technique. It is a vision that Ed has developed through years of experience as a professional photographer. Ken Hubbard who is the Field Services Manager for Tamron. He is responsible for the company’s events, including Tamron’s popular consumer workshop series. Ken has had nationwide gallery showings of his portrait and landscape photography and teaches enthusiasts how to take better photos at numerous events. Hazel Meredith is involved with the photographic community on local, regional and national levels. Her photos have won many awards and competitions in the past few years

She has over 125 acceptances in PSA-sanctioned exhibitions, and she has also received four bronze stars and one silver star for her journalistic efforts. Robert O'Toole, an award winning professional photographer, as a BBC/Shell Wildlife "Photographer of the Year" competition award winner and the American Bald Eagle Foundation "Photographer of the Year" for 2008. Ken Sklute, of Tempe, AZ., has been working with his passions of photographing people and drag racing for 32 years. Ken has succeeded in his photography career by being named Photographer of the Year a total of 25 times between Arizona, New York, and California.
Hal Wallar is an award winning photographer who has had a lifelong interest in photography and art. His photographic pursuits have ranged from fine art to technical photography and he has served as an author, presenter, and judge in regards to photographic topics.
