EDITORS NOTE

Hi Foskorites,

It feels like ages ago since we last spoke. I have never thought that, in my wildest dreams, I would ever have to write a letter like this to you all. As at the end of April, I

will no longer be working at Foskor. A wonderful opportunity has risen that will allow me to grow in my career and I am looking forward to gaining more knowledge in my field. It has been a very difficult decision as everything I have come to know about Communications and Public Relations I have learnt at Foskor.

I started as a learner at Foskor and after six years this wonderful journey ends. In six years I have learnt so much about so many things, I have met so many wonderful people and made friends with most of them, I am not leaving a company, I am leaving a family and I am not saying good-bye to colleagues but saying farewell to friends.

It has been an exciting time at Foskor with many ups and downs, cries and smiles. I have come to know some very interesting people and each of our strategies. Each of these I am taking with me wherever I go. In today’s age with technology I have no doubt that we cannot stay in touch.

I hand over now to Abigail Modika who will be your new editor of the Focus magazine. I have no doubt in my mind that she will deliver an even better magazine to all the Foskorites out there. On that note, I would like to say that even though I am no lon-ger on Foskor’s payroll or employed at Foskor, in my heart I will always remain a Foskorite and will carry that with me forever!

Lots of love Jeanine

Greetings to all Foskorites. This year promises to be better than the previous year where we had cash flow problems caused

by the depressed market conditions.

The first quarter of 2014 has been challenging, we made progress in implementing the strategic initiatives

recommended by a consulting company called Bain & Company.

We as South Africans should count our blessings as we just celebrated 20 years of democracy. Our country has made great strides in the last 20 years. Foskor has also gone through transformation in that period.

As mentioned earlier this year, our cash flow position has improved as compared to last year. In the second quarter of the year (April- June), the price of phosphoric acid has increased from USD 680 to USD 715 per ton. The outlook for the future looks brighter than the previous year.

Some of the key initiatives we implemented were:1. Closing of the PMC stream in Phalaborwa.2. Urgent applications to the Competition Tribunal to review the agreement between them and

Foskor.3. Restructuring of Foskor in terms of section 189 of the Labour Relations Act.4. Improvement in the Maputo Corridor logistics.

We look forward to a prosperous year ahead.

Background:

In terms of Chapter 23 of the Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996, Act 29 of 1996 as amended certain accidents and dangerous occurrences must be reported to

the DMR Inspectorate.

In this Samrass codebook an accident is where a person was injured or killed and a dangerous occurrence is where no injury took place.

The Samrass codebook was recently revised to ensure it conforms to international standards and to facil-itate comparison with all statistics. The intention of this Samrass codebook is to ensure that all mines make use of the same terminology regarding accidents and accident

reporting and the correct description of accidents or dangerous occurrence is of utmost importance.

Due to this the DMR headquarters

found that it is necessary to go to different venues in all the regions to train mine employees in the reporting of accidents and the completion of the applicable prescribed accident forms that must be submitted. On 18 February 2014, training was given to employees of various Mines in Phalaborwa at Moshate House.

The training session was presented by two ladies from the Department’s Pretoria headquarters, namely Made Hugo and Renee Joubert. They were accompanied by the Senior Mining Inspector, Mr Elliot Letsoko, who is based in Polokwane.

The training session was well attended by various mining companies. These sessions are

The Acid Division, have made a commitment to reduce our Carbon Footprint through

initiatives to improve Waste Management Practices by pursuing options of Re-use, Recycling and Reducing. The responsibility of day-to-day waste management is entrusted to all Foskorites, contractors and stakeholders

alike. Overall disposal costs can be minimised through reducing cross contamination of the various waste types and by implementing efficient waste handling and recycling initiatives.

Disposal of waste must be viewed as a last option since it requires high resource input and energy use. A reduction in waste disposal means not only means less energy and

SASDC HOSTS FOSKOR SUPPLIER PROGRAMME LAUNCH 13 MARCH 2014

On 13 March the SASDC (South African Supplier Diversity Council) launched a supplier programme at Foskor’s Acid division to a selected few Foskor suppliers. This programme is the collaboration between Foskor and SASDC and is fully funded by Foskor.

It aims at growth strategies for the chosen businesses. This programme assists suppliers to get certified to become creditable and trusted suppliers within the industries they service. The programme encourages transformation in South Africa through supplier diversity.

Sifiso Mncube, (Divisional Procurement Manager) and Khetho Gumede, (Superinten-dent Supplier Development) welcomed this programme openheartedly and said that suppliers need to invest in this programme so Foskor can invest in them. For more information, suppliers and potential suppliers can contact Khetho Gumede (FOSKOR) on 035 902 3111 or Sibusiso Mthethwa (SASDC) on 011 100 1025.

Attracting Prosperity

Page 29: Focus (Issue 2)

FOCUS 29

What does it mean to be prosperous?Prosperity is defined as a

state of flourishing, thriving, good fortune and or success-ful social status. Prosperity often encompasses wealth but also includes other factors which can be independent of wealth to varying degrees, such as happiness and health.

Doesn’t that sound great, wouldn’t we all like to be prosperous, to have all the money we will need and more, to have more money then we can spend in a lifetime. In todays trying times with food prices on the increase, petrol and imports becoming more expensive and a depreciating rand, more money seems to be the answer to all our prob-lems.

But have you ever considered that to be truly prosperous you need to feel prosperous first, because prosperity is some-thing that comes from within yourself.

Well, although prosperity does include money, you don´t necessarily need to have all the money in the world to feel prosperous. What you do need is to be satisfied with what you have, be grateful for what is in your life now and firmly believe that whenever you do not have what you´d like to have it will come to you effortlessly.

Really prosperous people go

through life´s ups and downs much more relaxed than peo-ple who don´t feel prosperous. They have all they need and are able to manifest whatever they might need, because of a deep believe that the universe will always take care of them. You don´t have to have a bank account overflowing with money to feel prosperous. Just doing things that make you feel satisfied and being grateful (among other things) is enough to feel prosperous.

How many of us feel satisfied? Most of us are always search-ing for the next best thing to make our lives better without paying attention to or being

grateful for what we already have. Believe me, if you have a roof over your head, food on the table on a daily basis and clothes on your back, you have a lot to be grateful for.

A way of feeling more satisfied is after you´ve done something that was very enjoyable, just sit back and enjoy the feeling it gave you. Try to make that feeling last as long as you can. For example, you´ve just had a very pleasant phone call with a close friend after you´ve had a quarrel and you both gave each other a chance to explain your side of the story. After hanging up the phone you feel great. Hold on to that feeling. That way you get used to feeling satisfied, which is very important to feeling pros-perous.

Having a good relationship with people is also a very good way of feeling pros-perous, because money is attached to people and is exchanged between people and entities.

This year, Foskor has emerged strongly from the 2013 slump. With the price of phosphates rising and a declining rand, Foskor has entered a period of prosperity. So you too, Fosko-rites, need to take this oppor-tunity and manifest a period of prosperity for yourselves in your work, wealth, health and happiness. Believe you can create a prosperous future and one will be waiting for you at your doorstep.

Khensani Ngobe started her career at Foskor nine years ago. She has made extraordinary leaps since those days as she was the first female artisan fitter at the Primary

Crusher and is now the first black lady to hold the position as Technical Supervisor.

Khensani said of the promotion, ‘Very excit-ed, I’m really happy about it as it is quite an achievement; I hope it will be an inspiration to other ladies as well’. When asked about the traits that made her get this position she replied with, ‘being a hard worker, taking ini-tiatives and knowing what I want and going

for it’.

Khensani was born in Giyani, Ngobe village; she began working for Foskor in 2005 as a learner Technical Operator Fitter; in 2006 she was appointed as the first female tech-nical operator fitter at Secondary Crushers; in 2010 she was the first female artisan and 2014 first female Technical Supervisor at Primary Crushers, ‘my career growth has been quite an exciting journey’ she says.

As for her upcoming challenges, Khensani explain, ‘I have been in this field and work-ing in a male dominated environment for nine years, I've been through it all, nothing fazes me anymore. I acted in this position for almost six months before being appointed, and I don't mean to be cocky but, I don't envisage any challenges as I've been through that already’.

Khensani’s aspirations do not end here, in five years she wishes to be a Mechanical Engineer. As for others, she hopes that all women at Foskor who are at the floor level could be given the recognition and oppor-

tunity to grow in their careers; she said, ‘I would like to see more female artisans, planners and super-visors’.

Her message to these ladies is: “Mintirho ya vulavula” anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it. Good things won't always come on a sil-ver platter and batting your eyelashes won't help you climb that ladder. You have to work very hard and put in extra effort to achieve your dreams.

Finally Khensani would like to thank Mr G E Gouws, her engineer, for believ-ing in her, supporting her and giving her the chance to prove herself. Without his guidance and encour-agement I would not

be here today’. ‘Not forgetting Mr Francois Kukkuk and all the people at secondary and primary crusher’s workshop’.

Celia has been working at Foskor for seven years now and began as a secretary/receptionist at Human Resources on the first of April 2007. In 2011 she was transferred to extension 8 as a secretary. While working at Foskor she completed her diploma and B-Tech in safety management through Unisa.

This promotion has excited her family but it was something they felt was a long time coming. As for her celebration on acquiring this position she feels the best is to give back to

the needy as an appreciation to God.

This promotion serves as the next step for Celia who wishes to complete her MBA and acquire all

the skills to handle any responsibility in a safety industry.

Celia is inspired by one lady and would like to give her a special praise, Doreen Dennison. (Pty) Ltd, Nkhensani District Hospital and Giyani Emergency Medical Services to engage in sporting ac-tivities purely for maintaining good health and to promote ‘Healthy Lifestyle’. That’s when this six monthly tournament was established in May 2013.

The first tournament was hosted by Maphutha L Malatji Hospital which was held in Namakgale at the Foskor Community Centre and there were no prizes. That did not demoralize the players because their great mission was to keep fit.

In November 2013 the second tournament was hosted by Nkhensani District Hospital and prizes were introduced; Foskor’s Netball Team got a trophy and gold medals whereas our Soccer Team got silver medals.

The third tournament was recently hosted by Foskor at the Lulekani Sports Precinct, which was well organised by four delegates from each institution, Phakula N from Maphutha L Malatji Hospital; Mathebula SL from Foskor (Pty) Ltd; Mlambo T from Nkhensani District Hospital; Mathebula JL from Giyani Emergency Medical Services. According to the organizers bronze medals will be introduced in the next tournament.
