FNMI PLANNING WORKING GROUP MINUTES

PURPOSE:

To complete the 2015/16 Early Child Development – Aboriginal Planning Template for approval by the Children and Youth Services Network and submission to the Ministry of Education.

To engage and strengthen relationships among service providers serving indigenous children, youth and families, and work together to plan for the delivery of more seamless and integrated services for aboriginal children and families throughout HPE.

5. Planning for Next Year 2016/17

All items from the 2015-16 plan – with perhaps the exception of inclusive language – will continue in 2016-17

Work on an ABC Fair in Tyendinaga will be added to support the PSL clinic

Staff training in Nipissing and introduction to the translation will be added – evaluation component also important

Susan advised that there is no call for a Metis translation at this time

CWM e-newsletter could benefit from funds to print brochures, if available

Brandi identified learning opportunity for CYSN around funding models, etc.

Tracey suggested including role play in NWD training sessions

PD Event – facilitated by Tracey and Diane – room arranged in circle - two sessions

Period Covered: April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016 Purpose: The Aboriginal Planning Working Group was struck by the CYSN on April 24, 2014. The group was renamed FNMI Planning

Working Group in October 2015. Six meetings were held at the Community Wellbeing Centre in Tyendinaga and one at the Metis Nation Healing and Wellness Branch in Bancroft to:

Aboriginal Family Literacy Circle (AFLC) Come Walk in My Moccasins e-Newsletter Update 2015/16

Through the FNMI Planning Working Group, the HPE Children and Youth Services Network (CYSN)

supported the Aboriginal Family Literacy Circle by providing $1,000 in 2015/16 to create and distribute

monthly e-newsletters to subscribers interested in knowing and using indigenous books, stories, languages,

teachings, recipes and more in their early learning programs or homes. The e-newsletters, coordinated by

the Aboriginal Family Literacy Circle with guidance from Knowledge Keepers and Elders, included First

Nations, Métis and Inuit family literacy content designed to support parents and professionals who touch

the lives of infants, toddlers and young children.

April 2015 to March 2016

Newsletter subscriptions at the end of 2015-16 fiscal year increased to 264. All subscribers were from

Ontario, mostly clustered in Hastings-Prince Edward and Kingston-Frontenac-Lennox & Addington. Ten

subscribers were from Ottawa and 27 from the Toronto area.

Newsletters and/or links to the e-newsletter were included on the CYSN and KFL&A planning table

websites, as well as certain agency websites and Facebook pages. (The number of subscribers may have

been impacted by websites that chose to post the newest newsletter each month rather than the link to

subscribe.)

A survey was sent out in September 2015 to request feedback from those who had subscribed or viewed

the newsletter. Book incentives were offered to encourage participation in the survey. A parent in

Belleville, an educator/parent in central Hastings, and a consultant in Toronto area were delighted to win

the book draws. Thirty-five respondents completed the survey. Their feedback helped guide the Circle and

Knowledge Keepers at the Aboriginal Family Literacy Circle planning day held in October 2015. The changes

to newsletter content came into play January 1, 2016. While it is speculative to say that the new content

caused increased interest in the newsletter, the open rate of the newsletter in January and February 2016

soared to 488% and 471% respectively from the previous average open rate of about 160% throughout

2015-16.

Engagement of Knowledge Keepers in designing and creating content for the newsletter also increased in

2015-16. There has been a sense of pride and joy in the work we do together on this project.

There is also great appreciation for the encouragement and financial support of the HPE CYSN.
