Location

The site is located at Block E lower ground floor in Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus. The site is about 10 x 10m large. The land functions as a small garden without any specific purposes.

There are two ways to approach the site. The first way is using the pathway, located between Block C, D and E and the lake. The second way is from the parking zone F. Because of the smaller size of the campus which is about 27 acres, the site is quite accessible from every corner of the campus. It only takes two minutes the most to reach the site from the furthest lecture theatre.

SUGGESTIONS

Although Taylor’s University has a large 5-storey library and some rest area outside the library which is an open space, it is still insufficient to allow more students to have a proper rest area. Some students have to keep looking for other rest area before class starts.

Hence, we decided to propose a new rest area in Taylor’s University. The new rest area shall be near to the lecture halls to ease the students to each the rest area after a tiring lecture. The rest area should also located near the parking zone so that students can sit and wait for someone to come and fetch them in a more comfortable zone, instead of standing under the hot sun.

The rest area is divided into two parts. The first part is the ground floor which is a cozy café. There will be plenty of comfortable seats and some tables for those who wants to study or do work. It is air-conditioned and soothing music will be played. The ground floor is surrounded by glass windows so that students can view the beautiful lake. Students can also rest while waiting for their parents, siblings or friends to come and fetch them after the lecture at the rest area. They can easily see if they are coming from the inside of the glass windows.

The second part will be the roof part. This café is not like any other café. It has a roof garden with seats and tables too. It’s a more private space because they are surrounded by green shrubs. Students can really calm their mind and forget about their worries for a while. Students have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the lake too.

RATIONALE

The main reason we propose this new rest area is simply because of the insufficient rest area for students in Taylor’s University. Taylor’s University is not a huge campus but there are quite a number of students (nearly 20,000), all studying under one roof.

The most visited places for a short break in Taylor’s University is the 5-storey library, the open space outside the library, which is hot and quite uncomfortable and the restaurants. Early birds get to claim a place to rest, but those who are a bit late will have to keep on searching for another rest area until the next lecture starts. Additionally, the above rest area becomes crowded and noisy; students will not feel comfortable to rest.

Without a proper rest place, students cannot relax themselves after a tiring lecture and might not concentrate well in the next lecture. Hence, it is necessary to allocate a proper rest are for the students in the campus.

BENEFITS

When there is a proper rest area in Taylor’s University, Those who gain the most benefits will be the students. They can finally have a break alone by themselves without anyone disturbing them. Sometimes they need to be alone because they will feel tired to keep on entertaining the others.

Besides that, students can also gain some rest before the next lecture starts. If they do not have enough rest, they will never get to concentrate well during the lectures. Slowly, they will start to lose interest in their academic performances. Hence, it is necessary to gain enough rest in the journey of learning.

In addition, some students choose to spend their time with their friends after the lecture ends. Most of them prefer to have a private spot where they can discuss about private stuffs. The new rest area will be an ideal place for them to chat and chill.

Next, Taylor’s University is not green enough; we can even count the number of plants using our hand. However, with this new rest area where the top part is a roof garden, the greenery in the campus will definitely increase. The roof garden features a variety of beautiful plants. They are not only nice to look at, they also lower the surrounding temperature and provide fresh air in the campus.

The rest area is located right beside parking zone F, so when their parents arrive, they can straightly now by viewing from the rest area. It doesn’t matter if the student is at the ground floor or the roof garden. This is because the ground floor is surrounded by glass windows while the roof garden is an open space.

SITE ANALYSIS

The site is a good spot to build a rest area for the students. This is because it is located right beside two tall blocks. During afternoon, where the sun shines the brightest, the site remains cool because the sunlight is blocked by the tall blocks. In addition to the cooling effect, the wind also blows from the lake to the block most of the time. The site also enhances walkability as it is easily accessible from the lecture halls and the paring lots.

NEEDS OF THE PROJECT TO THE CLIENT AND TO THE COMMUNITY

Taylor’s University really needs more space for students to rest properly, because the current rest area is seriously insufficient to allow such a huge number of students to do so. Besides, the students need a proper rest area where is it cooling and comfortable, not some random open space which makes them feel hot and sweaty. The new rest area which is a café suits the students well because it is air-conditioned and makes them feel more comfortable in a hot sunny day.

Some students feel tired of the technologies in the modern era; they need a place where they can get closer to nature. Although it is impossible to build a forest in the campus, they can still enjoy the greenery at the top part of the new rest area which is a roof garden. They can breathe some fresh air and escape from the concrete jungle for a short while.

Not only that, students also need some private time where not even their friends can come and disturb them. The rest area will be their first choice because students are not allowed to talk loudly so their friends would not want to come and chat with them.
