“A Celebration of Life”
istory of CATALYST
In 1996, Barbara E. Jackson, R. N., at that time, Public Health Program Administrator in the Cancer Control Program, Pennsylvania Department of Health, recognized a critical need to promote cancer awareness within the minority community. In response to that need, Barbara worked with key community leaders in the Harrisburg Area to establish a locally-based cancer coalition. Inviting other interested parties to join this endeavor, the coalition strengthened to spread the message that education, prevention and early detection can save lives. This effort brought together representatives from the worlds of Public Health and the Religious communities.
This organization was originally known as the Collaborative Meeting, strategies for recruiting the minority population. The group decided to change the name. In 1996, Clare Jones, the first chairperson, suggested the name, CATALYST. This present title, the Central Pennsylvania Coalition United to Fight Cancer (CATALYST), was agreed upon by the charter members on December 18, 1996. The group became incorporated in 1999.
A community-based organization, CATALYST, is in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, area churches, civic affiliations, and local health care agencies. The members are comprised of cancer survivors, lay persons, professionals, visionaries and clergy.
“CATALYST” is defined as one that provokes significant change. With the dedication, sacrifice and hard work of CATALYST members and its partners, health efforts in the minority community have expanded to include women, men, girls and boys. The CATALYST mission is to improve the cancer survival rate of ethnic and minority persons in Central Pennsylvania and statewide. By using culturally sensitive approaches, CATALYST promotes the benefits of early detection. While the initial focus has been on breast, cervical and prostate cancers, the group continues to address other cancers and cancer issues.
Throughout its history, the group met in various locations. In 1997, the Goodwin Memorial Baptist Church, located at 2447 Green Street, Harrisburg, PA graciously opened its doors to CATALYST as a meeting site. Since that time, it has hosted the meetings on the second Monday of each month.
Today, CATALYST members remain united and committed to battle the devastating effects of cancer in the Central Pennsylvania region. In the future, CATALYST envisions expanding the battle statewide and nationwide.

essage from our Co-Chairpersons
Welcome to CATALYST’S first Survivors and Friends Gala. This Gala is an evening of Celebration as we honor the lives of our courageous Cancer Survivors, those currently in the fight and the family and friends that support the battle against cancer.
Thirteen years ago, God gave foresight to our President/Founder Barbara E. Jackson, that there was a need for cancer awareness among minorities, and CATALYST was born. Since then, CATALYST has provided a vehicle for promoting cancer awareness within the minority communities through education, prevention and early detection as our message.
Three years ago, our President/Founder, perceived the need to encourage and recognize the daily struggles that Cancer Fighters and Survivors endure, and thus, the Celebration of Life Gala was born. Truly, this is our way of supporting our fighters and survivors as they go forth with their courageous battle to fight and educate others regarding cancer.
On behalf of CATALYST members, we thank the planning committee who worked diligently to make this an enjoyable and successful event. We thank all volunteers and sponsors. Most of all, we thank everyone in attendance. Without your presence, this Gala would not have been a success.
May God continue to bless you and yours as we continue to bring awareness to the many communities we serve.
Sincerely,
Maude Penn and Johathan “Chucky” Palmer Co-Chairpersons

Some of them are: Mother of the Year (1978) by the Central District Men & Women’s Union the Pennsylvania State Baptist Convention and her church for her contribution to The Foundation of Christianity and the Unity of Mankind by Rev. Paul S. Munford (Outstanding Mother). A plaque was presented from Pastor Charles R. Meile, Jr., and her Church Family of Congratulations and Special Blessings for her retirement (June 1995). Retiring from the Harrisburg School District after 22 ½ years of dedicated service, she has received Awards of Recognition from each Principal during her services at William Penn High School & Woodward Elementary School. Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker KnollSeptember 3, 1930 – November 12, 2008
The Honorable Catherine Baker Knoll, was a wonderful warrior who went where others dared not go. As Lieutenant Governor, Catherine Baker Knoll was the first woman in 200 years of Pennsylvania history to reach that milestone. For 6 years, she served more than twelve million Pennsylvanians with Governor Ed Rendell. Catherine Baker Knoll served the Commonwealth as its 42nd State Treasurer. During her two successive terms she was widely credited with “awakening a Sleeping Giant” and creating a model of innovation emulated by Treasurers’ throughout the country. A native of Allegheny County, PA, Knoll devoted her life to public service, first as a school teacher and business woman and later advancing issues including education, child safety financing and business development. She was a pioneer through out her life especially devoted to opening doors for women and minorities in areas such as statewide business and investing, and numerous housing and small business loan programs. With two degrees from Duquesne University, Catherine never stopped learning and studying. She did further coursework at Harvard’s Kennedy School and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. The Lieutenant Governor has honors and accolades for seven decades of public service too numerous to mention. Born the daughter of Mayor of McKees Rocks, PA she knew well how far she had come but never forgot where she came from. Wherever she traveled around America and the world she would end up bragging about the people and promise of Pennsylvania. “The leaves of my life keep falling one at a time. When you rake them into a pile of memories a couple of lessons become evident. One is that if we get wrapped up in our self, we’ll become a very small package. The other is that making a living involves what we GET- building a life involves what we GIVE. Now more than ever we should recognize that life is precious- that it is once-in-a lifetime experience- and it is your job and mine to encourage all of our citizens not to undervalue what they are.”
