It is once again our pleasure to have so many news and developments at HKIFM, to share the knowledge and insights with our members. In fact, it has been another challenging, yet eventful, months for HKIFM upon successful completion of HKIFM Shanghai conference, to finalize the international conference on sustainable integrated design process for build- ings and constructions, SIDP Hong Kong. A number of prominent and distinguished speakers both local and overseas will join this 2-day conference at Joint Professional Center on 29 and 30 September 2009. For HKIFM members, we will offer an attractive and value-for-money early bird discounted price covering all expenses such as 2-day lunches and refreshments. Please apply this without delay. For other events, conference and CPD conducted or supported by HKIFM, it is equally important to send a gentle reminder to all our members to attend. I am deeply grateful to members of the organizing committee for their hard work. There is a special focus in CAPITAL Magazine in June issue to report the presentation by our president, Mr Stephen Chung, on the China FM portfolio management from real estate’ s perspective together with my analysis on the trend of FM’s trend and development. I hope you all find this issue useful. Enjoy reading! Dr. Eric CHAN Director of Communications HKIFM I SIDP 2009 9 29-30

What is Integrated Design Process?

The IDP is proposed as an effective way towards a holistic collaborative design paradigm for sustain-able building. The IDP Conference cum Workshop differs from recent seminars and conferences intro-duced by the profession such as the sustainable building conference and the urban sustainability conference that focuses on new design knowl-edge. The IDP Conference cum Workshop focuses on how to manage and most importantly integrate design information. The IDP Conference cum Workshop targets on the management techniques more than particular design technologies.

About HKIFM

The Hong Kong Institute of Facility Manage-ment (HKIFM) is a non-profit making organi-sation inaugurated in 2000. It was formed by a group of professional people who are actively involved in the field of facility man-agement. The Institute is run by an elected Council that has a number of committees covering aspects on membership, educa-tion, corporate affairs, research and commu-nications.

Objectives of the SIDP Conference

1. A framework for design-input coordination throughout different stages of a building procurement process: design inception, feasibility study, scheme design, project design, project documentation and construction. 2. A study of the culture of design practice, perceived as inherent differences due to biases imbedded in specific professional disciplines. For instance, a building design concept may be generated from a symbolic reference while the same might also be generated from technical or functional references. Both approaches might lead to completely different built forms and constructions. The process of design according to an Architect could be a non-systematic, haphazard or even an erratic approach that contrasts with an Engineer’s step-by-step, or production-line process, for argument sake. Failure to understand how each other think and work presents a blockage against any attempts for an integrated design and hence disadvantages the product. The author has come across many instances in which the blockage could also be experienced within a multi-disciplinary professional practice.

Objectives of the SIDP Workshop

The study is extended to address the culture of a localised dynamic user market environment that is more responsive to demands for socio-economic changes rather than new and technological changes. For a developing economy, personal preoccupation that is associated with materialistic pursuits might explain the minimalist lip-service paid by real estate developers or project managers to implementing innovative design ideas and engineering techniques that focused on sustainability.

Building technology solving the crisis of energy security and

sustainability today

conference

PROGRAMMME HIGHLIGHTS:

• Building owners and managers face power consumption and conservation issues on a day to day basis. At BuilTech we

explore the pressure to ensure power stability in mission critical facilities design, realities of zero energy buildings and

consider potential futures such as the Smart Grid scenario in China.

• Building technology is playing a leading role with some companies meeting demand for cost-cutting and creation of new

revenue streams through innovation. BuilTech attendees will learn what technologies work and those that are suitable

for their operations.

• Expert speakers will map the rising role of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and design software, examining not only

how there technologies are shaving milions from construction and retrofit budgets, but how to know if the model can

ensure the finished product lives up to its promises.

• Largely made up of end-user case studies, BuilTech aims to provide practical solutions for people facing problems now

in the areas of fire and safety, energy management, water conservation, lighting, controls, building automation, security

and more...
