On behalf of the Board of Directors for the Flying Irish running club, we would like to thank you, the members, for making an-other one of our seasons truly memorable. Even though this was year 9, we still man-aged to accomplish a few new things and the board has continued to help solidify the Flying Irish Running Club as a staple in Spokane.

The Flying Irish running club is now a non-profit organization in the state of Wash-ington. That’s right, we are official! This means we can provide much more to you the member, to the running community, and to our Spokane community at large.

A few of our accomplishments in 2014 have included the very first and second Flying Irish beers. We were so fortunate that Iron Goat Brewing was willing to add our name to their truly delicious beers. Stay tuned for more of that very good thing this year.

It was our second year of the Flying Irish “Keep on Running” Grant. I think the Board agrees that this is one of the most rewarding additions we’ve made to serve

you! If you have a race in mind that you thought was prohibitive because of cost, apply! You never know you just may find we will foot the bill.

A big thanks to our volunteers and volun-teer coordinator! The Flying Irish are more visible than ever. Now just keep your eyes out for the tent at your next race! We are planning to be out there more this year and we hope you will join in on the fun and get involved.

We also updated our singlet in 2014 and made our 50 run “shirt” a hooded sweat-shirt! If you don’t have 50 yet, strive get this warm hoodie for your Flying Irish col-lection!

The 2015 season marks the 10th year Fly-ing Irish has been running the streets of Spokane. So keep your eyes open for all of the 10 year fun that we have planned.

It all started back in 2005 when the Flying Irish Running Club’s founder, Peter, came up with a grand idea that running should be a fun and social activity! Sure Spokane is a great running community with some of the top High School cross-country and track teams in the nation and the mega-running event in Blooms-day. But what about a weekly activity for the average person? Unfortunately, there wasn’t much available in Spokane at that time. With this idea starting to take form, Peter approached Tim O’Doherty, owner of O’Doherty’s Irish Grille in downtown Spokane, about an idea that he had. Peter was able to convince Tim with his crazy idea that a decent amount of people would meet at his place for a run each week. So Tim went along with the idea and the Flying Irish Running Club was born and had its first home.

The first ever Flying Irish run was on March 2, 2006 with 9 runners. Peter later claimed that most were his family that he persuaded to come!

By the end of that first year, however, the Flying Irish had grown to 202 members. The highlight of that first year was the introduction of the shirting ceremony. Before the first run ever took place, it was decided that to earn the Club’s shirt you had to run 6 times. To those who don’t know the significance of 6 comes from Jeff Kaline’s jersey number that hangs on the wall at O’Doherty’s. There wasn’t initially any plan for an official ceremony. After the first of the shirts were handed out in mid-April, one runner who had just received his shirt, decided to jump on top of the bar at O’Doherty’s and tell an Irish joke, similar to how you earn the right to put a $1-bill on the wall after singing a song. The runner may or may not have had a few glasses of the “black stuff” before this, but little did he know that by doing so he began the tradition that has been done by thousands of other runners since.

The Flying Irish called O’Doherty’s home for 6 years before it ultimately had to move on to a larger ven-ue to accommodate the huge growth of the Club. In those first six years the Club grew to over 2,500 peo-ple running each year with an average of 375 per week. During those same 6 years the number of routes doubled from the 6 originals to 12 different routes. It truly was a sad day when we left O’Doherty’s, but the Flying Irish remembers our roots and still goes “home” a couple of times a year for Legacy Runs.

The new home for the Flying Irish started in the 2012 season and is Ripples On the River, which is a part of the Red Lion River Inn. The 2012 season saw the addition of even more routes and the Flying Irish’ most successful season to date. The success of 2012 wasn’t enough and much like in previous years, the Flying Irish Running Club was not ready to settle and kept trying to improve in order to live up to the rep-utation as the biggest and best social running club in the world. The 2013 season saw numerous changes for the Club including: a new logo, the addition of a Club Coat of Arms, a new website and the biggest one of all: the move to make the Flying Irish a nonprofit organization. All these changes have enhanced the experience people have when they run with the Flying Irish Running Club. Not to be outdone, the 2014 season included two Flying Irish beers thanks to Iron Goat Brewing! We updated the 50 run mile-stone shirt to a hooded sweatshirt that can be sported in those early season runs or during the off-season!

The Flying Irish now offer grant money to help you, our member, to get to those races you thought you could not afford!

2015 marks year 10. Stay tuned because nobody does a 10th year quite like we can!

Our Mission: The Flying Irish Running Club is dedicated to the furthering of an active lifestyle through running in a social setting and strives to positively promote the sport of running. The Club is committed to provide fellowship, training, camaraderie, encouragement, guidance and to help people enjoy running in a social setting.

INAUGURAL PHOTO CONTEST

Our members have always enjoyed taking pictures of themselves sporting their Flying Irish shirt on their runs, adventures and travels throughout country and the world. It started to become its own trend so we created our own photo album of We Run the World to highlight our member photos. And thus, the eventual idea was formed to startup our very own photo contest to show off their Flying Irish enthusiasm but also their photogra-phy skills. We like to think of them as our Model Runners. We created four catergories in which our members could submit photos: We Run the World, Flying Irish Social, Flying Irish Race and Flying Irish Run. Winners were selected in each catergory along with an overall winner by the Board. We proudly present our inaugural photo contest winners...

“I was a runner when I was in high school, but life somehow got in the way and as I entered my 40s, I found myself overweight and out of shape. I joined the Flying Irish in March of 2013 and could barely finish my first route as a walker. I have kept at it and this last year I completed my 1st half-marathon as a RUNNER!!! Over that time I have been a Flying Irish member, I have lost almost 60 pounds and have dropped from a 1.5 hour 5K to a 33 minute 5K. I am working on increasing my stanima and continueing to decrease my running pace. I will be training during this upcoming so that I can run a full-marathon in 2016.

Planned Races: Windermere Half-Marathon

We love hearing about our member’s races that they participate in every year. We love hearing about them so much so that we want to further encourage our member participation in endurance races and events whether they are close to home or all the way across the globe. One of the parts of the Club’s mission is to the furthering of an active lifestyle through running. Well, we see no better way to make that happen by estab-lishing the Flying Irish Running Club Grant!! With the Grant, we are able to provide our members the opportunity to further their active life-style through running and also provide for encouragement, fellowship, and camaraderie with members of the Flying Irish Running Club. Out

of the 8 applications that were submitted for the Grant, the following three people were selected as the recipients.

“Flying Irish for us is a new tradition. It gives Natalie (my daughter) and I a chance to have some one-on-one time. She ‘s away from mom, her little brother and we can talk about life, and I get to know what’s on her mind. Natalie loves Flying Irish runs. She enjoys the group running aspect. She likes getting out there, and has really surprised me with how willing she is to engage with strangers… she has been much more social than I have seen before… she’s really come out of her shell with the Flying Irish group. Natalie has said she’d like to participate in a race that gets her a medal, and ive told her half-marathons are the way to go! Already, Natalie struts away from Flying Irish runs when we knock them out non-stop… she feels so good about herself, hanging in there with adults and doing some-thing that very few kids can/or are willing to do, I’m always telling Natalie how proud she should be that she can run 3 miles non-stop or 7.3 miles (even with walk breaks). Previously, running for me had been simply a means to an end (health, weight loss, etc). Now that I’ve started running with Natalie, and seeing how she benefits from running with the Flying Irish folks; the huge drop in anxiety, the boost in confidence and social interactions; im now enjoying running in a whole-new light. While im enjoy the benefits Natalie is seeing from running, we both also enjoy just being on the run together. We’re en-joying the journey, not just the destination. The Flying Irish has been a big part of Natalie’s progress, and I’m looking forward to more and more accomplishments as we continue our runs together and with the Flying Irish family.

“I’ have been running for six years. During that time, I have overcome many physical and medical challenges. I am a running miracle. I should be paralized from the nexk down. I refused to give up. Run-ning has become my freedom and place on earth. In between sur-gerises and injuries... I have grown so much as a person since joining the Flying Irish. I have over come my fear of crowds, have a new self assurance because of the confidence gained with running. I am work-ing forward to running my first full marathon. I have ran four haf-marathons and can’t wait to have my full-marath.on metdal”

STORIES FROM OUR 2013“FLYING IRISH KEEP ON RUNNING”

GRANT RECIPIENTS

Jen Crane“2014 was a year of many changes, and the half marathon wasn’t the only new endeavor I embarked on. On Feb-ruary 15, my husband and I became foster parents to a 12 year old girl. I had not yet begun my training, as I had planned to wait until the spring. I’m a procrastinator by nature, and I always anticipated this would be a problem for me. I had hoped to train via Jeff Galloway’s training schedule, and in my first few weeks I did ok. It was a little bit of a challenge to get out and run, as I was not able to leave the 12 year old home alone, and she was not fit enough to run with me, but I was at least trying. On a positive note, I did take her to Bloomsday and the Hear Me Run 5k in early June. She walked Bloomsday with my friends, while I attempted to see how far I could run. Bloomsday didn’t go wonderfully for me. I had a great deal of knee pain between mile 2 and 3, so I had to walk the rest of the course. It was definitely an indicator I had a long way to go. When summertime hit my training totally derailed. In April we met 3 girls in foster care who needed a forever home. During the summer, we spent quite a few weekends with them to see if they would be a good fit for our family. Needless to say, they required a lot of attention and my training was pretty much non-existent for most of the summer. When we didn’t have them at the house, we were making the preparations for them. It was so chaotic! The reality of my lack of training really hit in August, and I made it out for a handful of runs to try and prepare myself in what little ways I could. I resigned myself to a new plan for the half. I was hoping I could alternate the entire course with run-walk-run. I was comfortable running about 5 miles, which I know isn’t much, but I was hoping it would be enough to get me to the finish line. Despite my complete lack of training, race day was such a big thrill! It seemed so much bigger than any runs I had done previously, but Bloomsday is still technically bigger so I’m not sure why Disneyland felt so huge. My brother is much faster than I am, so he started in an earlier corral. He wanted to make a plan to meet up during the race because his goal was to see me finish. There was a lot of confusion, and I ended up getting ahead of him at one point. I stopped so he could catch back up, and then we continued on. While my knee held up well, I had a new problem during the half. I developed a huge blister on my toe, and it made running extremely painful. I probably should have stopped at a first aid station to get a bandaid, but I pressed on because I was afraid of the balloon pacers at the end (even though I was far enough ahead to never see them). I wanted to ensure I had enough time to be a finisher. As a result, I spent the last half of my run limping a fast walk and trying to be gentle with the blister. I was never so happy to cross a finish line in my life. It wasn’t pretty, but I did it! While I know better than to think I can put in training for another anytime soon, I hope to attempt another half someday with much better results. My best friend (who is by far not even remotely a runner) even wants to try one after hearing about my experience, and a couple years down the road I can see her and I crossing the finish line together. The lessons I took away are that I definitely need to be more consistent with my training if I want to run it comfortably, always keep bandaids on me during long runs in case of blisters, and really research how to avoid them in the first place. Someone mentioned toe socks might help my toes not rub together, so I’d like to put in some runs with them and see how I do. Thank you again for the opportunity to get out there and try something new. Our forever daughters are very active, and I am excited to bring them to Flying Irish runs in 2015!

“Thanks to the generosity of the FI, I was able to do more runs/events than originally planned. I wore Flying Irish colors at local, regional and national races, often placing in the top 3 of my age group. Thanks to the Flying Irish, I was able to well-represent the Flying Irish. It was a blast, and I am very grateful!! “

“I applied for the Flying Irish grant to complete my first full marathon, the Winderemere Marathon. I started my training in February. I participated in Winter Warriors to keep myself motivated to run when it was cold. I also signed up for and completed a lot of different races in order to stay motivated. I completed Snake River half mara-thon with a PR, Mead Marching Madness 5k (3rd overall woman), Partners in Pain 5k, Recycle Run 4 miler (4th over-all woman), Justin C. Haeger 3.3 miler (2nd overall woman), Coeur d’Alene marathon 5k (3rd age group), Bloomsday, and then it was finally time for the big day!

I had never ran over 13.1 miles before so every training run past that felt like a victory! I did injury my knee during training, but I was determined to run the marathon anyways. I made it to the half way mark with only a little pain, but the further I got, the more pain I experienced. I ended up hobbling along, but I was not going to give up!!! I ended up finishing an hour longer than I had expected, but still very happy I finished at all!

I decided to learn from the experience, join more running groups, and train smarter! I am injury free, running stronger and faster than ever, and am signed up to redeem myself for the 2015 Windermere Marathon!

If not for Flying Irish and this grant, I would not have had the motivation to keep training, participate in all those races, or even attempt a full marathon. I am so grateful! “

BOARD MEMBERS JOINING IN 2015At the Annual Member’s Meeting, held on Decemeber 4th, 2014, members of the Flying Irish Running Club voted on four of the Board of Directors’ positions that were up for election: Grand Poobah, Treasurer, Spon-sor Liaison and Volunteer Coordinator. We had three candidates for the Grand Poobah and Treasurer posi-tions and and one candidate each for the Volunteer Coordinator and Sponsor Liaison positions. We would like to thank all of the candidates who ran for being willing to dedicate their time for the Flying Irish Run-ning Club and most importantly we would like to thank Michele Miller and Jon Jonckers for serving as the Treasurer and Sponsor Liaison positions repsectively for the first two years of the Club being a nonrpofit!

Every year the Board of Directors that are elected by the members of the Flying Irish Running Club select two members to serve on the Board as the Long-term Member and New Member Representatives. These positions represent the members that have been inolved with the Club for an extensive period of time (100+ runs) and those who have just recently joined the Club respectively. During the 2014 season the Long-Term Member Representative was held by Nicole Lund while the New Member Representative was held by Dave Bartelson. Thanks for your service Nicole and Dave!

Brendan DowlingGrand Poobah - PresidentWhat can we say... we could not keep him away. Brendan continues to serve as the Grand Poobah of the Flying Irish after holding the position for the last six years.

Nicole LundSponsor LiaisonNicole enjoyed her time serving as the Long-Term Member Representative so much in 2014 she decided to take on the Sponsor Liaison position. With her many connections in the running industry we will be able to develop some great relationships that will certainly benefit our members.
