Stage1.Mostsolidobjectsenteringthepumpwillpassthroughtheimpellerbetweentheimpellervanes.Ifanobjectgetscaughtontheleadingedgeofoneofthevanes,itwillslidealongthebacksweptshapetowardstheperimeteroftheinlet.

Stage2.Thesolidobjectwillslidealongthetipoftheimpellervaneinsidethereliefgroove.Theguidepinintheinsertringwillpushalltypesofsolidsawayfromthecenteroftheimpeller,alongtheleadingedgeandoutthroughthereliefgroove.

Sustained high efficiencyWhensolidobjectssuchasstringyfibrousmaterialandmoderntrashentertheinletofaconventionalpump,theytendtogetcaughtontheleadingedgesoftheimpellervanes.Thisbuildupreducestheimpeller’sefficiency,resultinginincreasedpowerconsumption(Fig.A)andgeneratingincreasedenergycharges.

Assolidscontinuetobuildupinsidetheimpeller,motorthermalprotectioncantripcausingthepumptostopandleadingtocostlyunplannedservicecalls.Ifaconventionalwastewaterpumprunsintermittently,thesolidsbuildupwillberemovedbybackflushingwhenthepumpisshutoffattheendoftheoperatingcycle.Whenthenextcyclebegins,efficiencyreturnstoitsinitialvaluesincetheimpellerisfreefromsolidobjects(FigB).
