Compared to dry-mounted mixers, submersiblesolutions offer greater flexibility and considerablesavings in energy consumption for a wide range ofmixing applications, such as solids suspension, bottomerosion, blending, circulation or destratification.

2

Submersible mixing

Better mixing and reduced power consumption

A submersible mixer offersmore flexibility in positioningand orientation.

How does mixing work? All mixing applications require varying degrees ofboth small-scale turbulence and bulk flow. With agood bulk flow, the contents of the entire tank areput in motion so that all parts are involved in themixing. Most mixing applications generate abundantturbulence and it is the strength of the bulk flowthat controls the efficiency of the mixing. Theperformance of a submersible mixer is measured bythe thrust (N) that it produces. So the strength of thebulk flow is in turn dependent on the total amountof installed thrust.

Submersible mixers mean more efficient bulk flowSubmersible mixers allow a great deal of flexibility inpositioning and orientation, unlike their dry-mountedcounterparts. The mixer jet can be positioned todevelop over a long distance and adapted to theshape of the tank. This ensures the creation of amaximum level of bulk flow. The result: moreefficient mixing and lower power consumption.

Allowing the mixer jet todevelop leads to a goodbulk flow and efficientmixing of the entire tank.

Page 3: Flygt Compact Mixers

In comparison with dry-mounted mixer installations, the submersible solution is often preferred. It presentsa quick and easy installation with low capitalinvestment since there is no need for costly catwalks, external transmission or concrete motor supports.

No expensive modificationsThanks to the flexibility of installation, the mixingequipment can be used in existing tanks without the need for expensive alterations to the site.

There are a wide range of installation techniques that can be used for installing submersible mixers. The most frequently-used methods are detailed to the right. We can also advise on other mountingsolutions.

Easy and quick to install

Guide bar mountingThe most commoninstallation method. The mixer is lowered orraised along a guide barlocated on the tank wall.

Cantilever mountingSmall mixers can bemounted on a cantileverbar which is simplyclamped or bolted ontothe tank edge.

Floor mountingOften used in shallowtanks and ponds. Themixer is fixed to a stand onthe bottom.

Flange mountingThe mixer is fixed to anadapter flange, which inturn is mounted in thetank inspection hole(patent pending).

The design

How well a mixer performs depends primarily on thedesign of the hydraulic parts. And the mixing result inmost applications depends on a good bulk flow beinggenerated throughout the tank. This is why all Flygtmixers are designed to generate the maximum of thrustwith the minimum of power consumption.

Efficiency must also be maintained in highly fibrousmedia without the propellers clogging. The swept-backdesign of Flygt mixer propellers minimises this risk.

Add a jet ring, boost efficiency even furtherA well-designed jet ring can substantially increase theefficiency of a mixer, thus further reducing powerconsumption for the same or even higher thrust. Thejet leaving the mixer is axial, but the inflow is mostlyradial. The jet ring reduces losses connected to thischange of flow direction, as well as losses from bladetip recirculation. Efficiency can increase 10–15% inwater and even more in viscous media.

Getting tough on abrasionOrdinary metals may suffer severe abrasion whenmixing hard mineral slurries. To combat this, Flygt4600 mixer propellers are also available in High chromium white cast iron. This is an extremelyabrasion-resistant alloy: however, it offers limitedcorrosion resistance and is not recommended for usebelow a pH of 5,5.

Steel quality

Frequently, mixers have to operate in corrosive and/orabrasive liquids, and both abrasion and corrosion mayaffect the mixer, especially the propeller. The corrosivityof a liquid can be for a number of different reasons, such as dissolved oxygen, low pH, chloride content orcertain micro-organisms. Abrasion is caused by hardparticles in the mixed media.

Which material offers the best corrosion protection?ASTM 316L stainless steel is often the preferred choice of material for Flygt 4600 mixers. Thanks to itsmolybdenum content it provides excellent corrosionresistance even in liquids containing chlorides. Thismakes it the recommended alternative in manywastewater treatment plants and in most processindustry applications. ASTM 304 mixers is analternative for less corrosive liquids (chlorides<200ppm at pH7). For highly agressive media such as sea water, mixers are available in Proacid 254 (see diagram).

wear between the two seal surfaces, offering a longerlife with less risk of leakage. It offers bettermechanical strength and is far less brittle andsensitive to handling damage than SiC.

WCCR has a binder where chromium, nickel andmolybdenum have been added giving excellentcorrosion resistance down to a pH of 3.

SiC is the better choice in two kinds of conditions:when the pH is lower than 3, and when mixing smallparticles that are harder than WCCR.

Shaft seals are a crucial component in the reliabilityof a submersible mixer. Flygt 4600 mixers havedouble mechanical shaft seals and an intermediatebarrier fluid. The inner and the outer seals arecombined into one rigid plug-in seal unit.

Why do seals wear out?Theoretically, the surfaces of the mechanical seals areconstantly divided by a liquid film. In reality there isalways some direct contact between the rings leadingto wear of the seal surfaces. This is why the choice ofmaterial, and its sliding properties, is extremelyimportant to the longevity of a mechanical seal.

Tungsten Carbide or Silicon Carbide?ITT Flygt gives you two choices of seal material forthe 4600 mixers: corrosion-resistant tungsten carbide(WCCR) or silicon carbide (SiC).

WCCR is the optimum choice in most applications. Itssuperior sliding properties mean significantly less

Installation accessories should be rigidenough to withstand the weight andreaction forces exerted by the mixer yearafter year. Professional operators alsoneed the equipment to be easy to workwith for installation, as well asinspection and service.

Guide bars for any tankIn most Flygt submersible mixerapplications, a guide bar is usedtogether with a lifting davit, which issupported by an upper and lower guidebar bracket. Long guide bars can also be fitted with an intermediate bracket. The brackets allow the guide bar to beangled for different positionings of themixer. The mixer can be installed at anydepth along the guide bar, dependingon the application.

Convenient and safe lifting equipmentITT Flygt provides equipment that enables convenient lifting and handling of mixers. The safety is guaranteed with the CE marking, theEuropean sign for safety approval.

The lifting davit is mounted in aholder at its lower end whichenables easy turning of the davit. To raise the mixer, thedavit is fitted with either a winch or a pulley block.

To reduce investment cost, onedavit can be used for several mixers. Mixers can be left submerged without being suspended by the lifting wire. One solution is a ITTFlygt patented lifting device thatguarantees the connection to a lifting bail on the mixer.

Options and additional features

Explosion-proof versionsFor duty in explosive or flammable environments, allFlygt mixers are available in Ex-approved versions.

Stator drainage detectorSince a mechanical shaft seal consists of two moving surfaces, it is not hermetically tight. So there may be a small, controlled leakage. A miniature sensor can be installed to automatically detect any need for draining.

Equipped for every condition

SupervisionSurveillance of thermaloverload switches anddrainage detectors ispreferably handled byFlygt MiniCAS. This relayis an easy way to ensureprotection of yourequipment.

Patented vortex protection shieldIn some applications the liquid depth is very shallow;in other cases the mixer must be placed close to thesurface. This may cause air vortices to be drawn fromthe surface into the mixer propeller, causing damageto the propeller and resulting in a drop inperformance. To prevent this, Flygt mixers can beequipped with a patented vortex protection shield.

Seal flushingWhen mixing very fine particles (smaller than theliquid film between the surfaces of the mechanicalseal), these particles may penetrate the seal. Toprevent this, Flygt mixers can be equipped withaccessories for flushing the seal with either air or water.
