BETWEEN MINDFULNESSAND SOCIAL JUSTICE
The Environmentalist Group of the Zen Buddhist Temple,Ann Arbor is hosting this two-day workshop to develop
inspiring responses to injustice guided by spiritual wisdomand political awareness. We invite you to join us for this
unique workshop weekend, to be held Saturday September3rd and Sunday September 4th at the Zen Buddhist
Temple in Ann Arbor.
The Dharma and Direct Action Workshop will be led by Dawn Haney and Katie
Loncke, co-directors of Buddhist Peace Fellowship, an Oakland, California-based
organization started in 1978 to promote a Buddhist approach to social and
environmental justice. Dawn and Katie lead engaged Buddhism workshops around the
country, recently in New Orleans and New York.
The workshop will combine conversation, reflection, and practical training in such
areas as:

The goal of this workshop is to strengthen strategic actions and build
coalitions between groups of spiritual activists in Southeast Michigan,
where economic inequality, racial discrimination, and environmental
injustice do everything from cutting funding for much-needed public
programs to poisoning our water.

Mindful of the interconnectedness of all beings, we know that power
comes from solidarity and coalition-building. Therefore, we are seeking
applicants across a range of backgrounds and identities, including but not
limited to race, gender, sexuality, ability, age, and religious affiliation, or
lack thereof.
Workshop tuition, which covers Dawn and Katie's travel costs, is on a
sliding scale. Participants who submit their applications before June 20th
will get a special early-bird discount at the sliding scale rates of $35,
$100 (full tuition), or $200. After June 20th, the sliding scale cost will be
$50, $165 (full tuition), or $290. There may be scholarship funds available
to help participants with travel and childcare costs. Please inquire.
The application deadline for this workshop is July 18th, 2016. Important:
Attendance to this event is by application only. Space is very limited, so

The Ann Arbor Zen Temple will provide meals and overnight
accommodations for participants from out of town. The workshop is held
in an accessible, fragrance-free location, and overnight accommodations
will include safe space for trans* and gender-non-conforming
participants.
