Fluid Catalytic Cracking Micro Activity Test unit
Catalytic upgrading ofbiooils can be studied in theFCC MAT unit at RISE ETC. FCC is a very important refinery processand FCC MAT units are commonly usedto study e.g. catalyst activity accordingto ASTM standardized methods. TheFCC MAT unit at ETC is speciallydesigned to allow co-refiningexperiments of biooils and fossil oils. Description of the unitTwo syringe pumps are used to feed theoil/-s to the reactor. Inside the reactor,
the oils are upgraded in contact with thefixed catalyst bed in a flow ofnitrogen. The liquid products are thencondensed in cooled glass vessels, andthe reaction gas is collected andanalysed via µ-GC. After theexperiment, solid products inside thereactor are combusted with air and theeffluent CO2 is quantified, allowing amass balance of the system to beperformed. Up to seven consecutiveexperiments of this type can beperformed in an automatic sequence. The formed products can then, ifdesired, be subjected to detailedcharacterization.
