CETIM schedules series of short courses on acoustic intensity and noise measurements The Department of IndustrialAcoustics of CETIM, located at Senlis (outside Pads, France),has scheduled fourshort courses for engineers and technicians whose workisconcerned with acoustic intensity measurements and the measurement, reduction, and abatement of industrial noise. The first of these courses was held at Senlis, 18-20March 1986. It was designed to familiarize the participants with the latest development in the area of intensity measurement techniques. The remaining meetings to be heldat Senlis deal with noise problems ( 17-18June 1986),machine noise measure- ments ( 16-18September 1986),and noise protection in theworkplace ( 7-9 October 1986). The courses will be given in French, attendance is limited, andspecific information is available from CETIM, Service Formation, B.P. 67, 60304 Senlis Cedex, France. The modest beginnings of the newfacilities gobackabout 6 years whenan old mansion wasused to holdclasses for 11 speech- or heating-impaired children. The new facilitiespresently accommodate 55 students and a staff of about 30. The newschool is named afterHendrik Mol, formerly director of the Pho- netic Sciences Institute at Amsterdam University. His electrical engineer- ing background allowed him to develop numerous aidsfor speech- and heating-impaired children. Hendrik'Mol, who had beena member of the Acoustical Society of America, died in 1980. His widow was present at the opening ceremonies where she unveiled the name plaque. Fluctuation Phenomena in Underwater Acoustics Conference to be held in U.K. The Underwater Acoustics Group of the Institute of Acoustics (U.K.) is scheduling an International Conference on Fluctuation Phenomena in Underwater Acoustics, to be held at Weymouth, Dorset, 9-10 December 1986. The meetingwill concentrate on the influence of random inhomo- geneities in the medium on underwateracoustic propagation and on the fluctuations in the phase and amplitudeof the received signal, caused by internal waves, turbulence, andotheroceanographic phenomena. Keynote papers will bepresented in each of the majorsubject areas. Offers of contrib- uted papers are requested on all topics embraced by the title of the confer- ence. The deadline for submission of 200-word abstracts is 27 June 1986. All communications should be sentto P. F.
