  • FloWorks - CSIRO’s Centre for Industrial Flow ChemistryUsing the latest in flow chemistry and process technology, CSIRO can provide manufacturing solutions to rapidly synthesise small molecules and polymeric materials.

For every kilogram of fine chemical currently produced by the pharmaceutical industry, 5–100 times that amount of chemical waste is generated. Our goal is to use innovative and highly efficient new methods to reduce this chronic inefficiency and waste, improve the health and environmental impacts, and preserve resources.

Centre for Industrial Flow Chemistry (FloWorks)

FloWorks is a state-of-the-art facility providing access to CSIRO’s cutting-edge research into industrial processing for Australian and international chemical manufacturers. Flow chemistry reactors are a safe, efficient, cost-saving and reliable alternative to conventional batch apparatus for chemical processing.

FloWorks provides a range of different services, including:

    • Processing R&D operations at CSIRO for a wide array of client applications

    • Managing technology transfer to the client’s site

    • In-house training for industrial collaborators on the centre’s flow chemistry and process equipment.

Continuous flow processingFlow chemistry reactors consist of either tubular pipes or channelled plates. Chemical reactions take place in a continuous stream within these highly controlled environments.

    • Better process control resulting in higher product yields & purities, shorter reaction times, and less waste

    • Better scalability due to compact, efficient and modular reactor design

    • Smaller physical footprint resulting in reduced capital, operating & maintenance costs

    • Superior inherent safety resulting in lower risk and environmental impact

    • Superior mixing, enhanced heat and mass transfer, wide pressure and temperature operation windows

    • ‘Plug and Play’ modular equipment

Flow chemistry makes chemical production safer, more reproducible and scalable while offering reduced cost and low environmental impact.

Innovative chemical manufactureFloWorks designs and creates new molecules and polymers with specific properties and functions.

Using our expertise, we can develop the chemical route and the process technology for a wide range of applications in different manufacturing industries including:

    • Fine & Speciality Chemicals

    • Polymers

    • Pharmaceuticals & Health Care

    • Agrochemicals

    • Food Additives

    • Biofuels & Renewable Materials

CapabilitiesFloWorks operates a broad range of continuous flow reactors and chemical process equipment, ranging from a few mL to several Litres in reactor volume. We work closely with commercial equipment suppliers to optimise reactor design and process efficiency by:

    • Devising chemical processes using off-the shelf reactor solutions from one of our collaborating equipment manufacturers

    • Designing new tailor-made chemical reactors, dedicated for a specific operation

    • Developing novel reactor concepts for a range of common chemical processes, such as heterogeneous catalysis and multi-phase reactions

About CSIRO ManufacturingAn Australian manufacturing industry that provides new products, highly skilled jobs, export growth and economic benefits is vital to Australia’s future. CSIRO Manufacturing is providing the science and engineering skills, the equipment and international connections that enable a globally competitive Australian manufacturing sector. In recent years CSIRO has partnered with industry to deliver innovative chemical manufacturing processes, including; drug (API) process development, discovery, process optimization and scale-up of speciality and fine chemicals and polymer synthesis.
