Perhaps we have spent so little time with you, we have forgotten the joy in coming home. Forgive us and welcome us once again. In the name of your Son, Amen.

Pastor’s Message

Fall CYF Ministries!

It’s hard to believe, but summer is passing us by, school is starting up, and a new year of children’s and youth ministry is beginning. Kristin Underwood (Director for Children’s Ministry), Georgia Berceau (Middle School Coordinator) and I are all very excited about getting your children and youth involved at First Congregational. So, on behalf of the staff and the countless volunteers in our ministry teams, let’s get going!

If you are a parent or guardian of a child or youth, we invite you to come to parent orientation. We will share about the content and mission of our ministries and about opportunities to volunteer. We will introduce supporting staff and volunteers, and get to know each other. Here are some important dates for parents and guardians. All orientations are in the Fellowship Hall.

Church School Parent Orientation, September 9, 6:30–7:30 PM and September 20, 9:45–10:30 AM

Middle School Parent Orientation, September 16, 6:30–7:00 PM High School Parent Orientation, September 16, 7:0 0–7:30 PM 2015–2016 Confirmation Orientation for mentors, parents and confirmands,

October 7, 6:30–7:30 PM.

It’s also important that all children and youth participating in our ministries are registered. The online registration process helps us to prepare a safe and loving environment for your child. Please help us be as prepared as possible. You will need to create a profile on our membership portal if you have not done so already. An easy “cheat sheet” with directions is found under the “Read it Here” tab at the top of our church website. Each child can then be registered from your portal homepage. If you have any questions, please contact the church office.

Each year approximately 300 children and youth participate in our ministries over half a dozen times throughout the year. Many of these children and youth are here almost weekly! From musicals to mission trips, weekend retreats to Wednesday night discussion groups and service projects, we are blessed with many lively and vibrant young faces. Thank you for trusting us with your children and allowing us to share the invaluable gift of faith for generations to come.

Peace, Pastor Nick

Jane Anderson, Pastor for Congregational Life

Thanks from the Fellowship

Team

What a party we had August 12! It was an awesome farewell party for Pastor Jane, complete with fabulous music and a delicious meal. The Fellowship Ministry Team extends a huge thank you to the more than 30 volunteers who assisted us with the meal and all that went with it, including the set up and take down of tables and chairs.

Special thanks go out to Fellowship Team member Chuck Spanbauer for orchestrating the meal. Special thanks also to Gale Korth and Leigh Grube for providing the flowers, and to Leigh for her artistic arrangements of them for the tables. Everyone who helped out was essential to the success of this event.

Labyrinth Garden Workshops

September 5 and 19, 10:00 AM

These workshops are the second and third of a series held this summer.

The goal of the labyrinth workshop series is to help explain the wonderful richness of the

flora surrounding the labyrinth to church members and any other interested individuals, and to recruit help to rejuvenate and maintain the plantings.

During the workshop, we will remove plants that are taking over spaces, and any weeds we can find. We will also be planting a few new shrubs and perennials to help add some color into the space and help add diversity. Currently in the Labyrinth we have sedum, lilacs, dogwoods, yarrow, little bluestem and Karl Foerster to name a few! A landscape architect will be helping to direct our efforts and will also be able to answer any plant questions you may have!

Simply Mindful Monthly

Gathering

Thursday, September 10, 6:30–8:00 PM

Simply Mindful is a monthly gathering at First Congregational to practice bringing

mindfulness into daily life. Each month we start with a basic mindfulness exercise and then apply that practice to a timely holiday, event or issue to gain greater insight, understanding and clarity.

The group welcomes people new to mindful practice and more experienced practitioners, too. If you’re interested in joining us, please let us know that you’re coming by signing up in the Narthex or registering online on the events calendar of the membership portal, https://fcucc.proclaimcrmonline.com/Events/Calendar.

New Need for Refugee

Resettlement Assistance

Refugee families from Congo are due to arrive in Appleton over the next few weeks, and First Congregational’s Good Neighbor Team is seeking new volunteers

to partner with World Relief Fox Valley in assisting their resettlement transition.

This is an opportunity to be the heart, hands and feet of Christ by serving those who have suffered violence and persecution and been displaced from their homeland. Volunteers can offer assistance in many ways, such as: setting up apartments before their arrival; joining with others in giving a much-needed, hearty welcome at the airport, where refugees often arrive anxious and alone; taking them to appointments; and visiting them at their apartment to offer friendship and assistance.

World Relief and other Fox Valley organizations provide core relocation support such as finding housing, employment, language lessons, etc., while the Good Neighbor Team is more like a family surrounding them with love and assistance with day-to-day needs and cares. This is a highly moving and rewarding outreach.

If interested in volunteering as an individual directly with World Relief or in joining our Good Neighbor Team, please contact Sarah Klintworth, (920) 720-9962 or www.firstcongoappleton.org/contact/sarah%20klintworth, or see Deb Burich.

New Mission Team on Climate

Change

Our Mission and Service ministry team is seeking people interested in joining a new

13

Climate Change Action Team. We have been invited by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship to form a team that will collaborate with their Climate Justice Action Team and other faith communities in the area.

The UU vision for their team is:

act in a leadership role with other congregations and organizations

achieve UUA Green Sanctuary accreditation

create a cleaner, more environmentally sound Fox Valley

increase opportunities for young people in climate justice activities

Our team will work toward a similar vision, which will be refined by the team once it is formed.

If you are interested in being part of First Congregational’s Climate Change Action Team, please contact Deb Burich, Director for Mission and Service, www.firstcongoappleton.org/contact/deb%20burich.

Ecumenical/Community Poverty

Simulation

September 20, 11:30 AM–3:00 PM

Together with other faith and secular community members, you are invited to participate in a poverty simulation facilitated by CAP Services (Community Action Program) and coordinated by members of the Congregational United

Church of Christ, Neenah-Menasha and the First United Methodist Church, Neenah-Menasha. The poverty simulation is designed to help people better understand the realities of poverty. Participants will experience the complexities and frustrations of living in poverty day to day. With a greater awareness of its impact, we can more effectively address poverty issues in our community and beyond.

All participants are invited to a light lunch to be served at 11:30 AM and the simulation will begin at 12:30 PM. Registrations can be made online at http://goo.gl/forms/kTxp5lqlu8, or by calling Congregational UCC at (920) 725-4873. Please register no later than September 16.

Back Bay Mission Remembers

Hurricane Katrina

August 23–31, 2005

Ten years ago this month, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast. By the end of the storm, more than 200 people had died, more than 60 people were missing, and billions of dollars of damage had been done in Mississippi alone.

Back Bay Mission is posting about the hurricane on their social media sites throughout the month. Beginning on August 23, they will live tweet the timeline of the hurricane (@backbaymission), and on August 28, a video will be posted on YouTube

14

featuring interviews of mission staff and friends who worked to rebuild the Gulf Coast.

Our next mission trip to Back Bay is scheduled for July 16–23, 2016. This trip is joined with our annual youth mission trip. On the adult side of the trip, we need construction mentors and leads for the youth, and adults to teach and oversee youth in home rehabilitation projects. Chaperone responsibilities will be addressed on the youth side of the trip.

If you’d like to come with us, please contact Ken Jahnke or Deb Burich. www.firstcongoappleton.org/contact/Ken%20Jahnke (or Deb%20Burich).

Supporting LEAVEN

According to LEAVEN’s 2014 annual report, volunteers donated 17,261 hours of service in 2014. This is the equivalent of 8.3 full-time employees and 67% of all hours worked at the organization.

Funding support for LEAVEN comes from a variety of sources: foundations (39%), individuals (21%), faith-based communities (13%), the government (11%), other organizations (9%), donated goods and gas vouchers (4%), businesses (2%), and fundraising events (1%).

One client says “Thank you for the assistance you provided to me at a time in my life when I was struggling like never

before! I will always remain in gratitude for the kindness and support I received and the respectful way in which I was treated. I am back on my feet and would now like to return this for the aid of another.”

If you are interested in volunteering for LEAVEN, please contact Jann Kostecke at www.firstcongoappleton.org/person/jann-kostecke.

ESTHER Banquet

Sunday, December 6, 5:00 PM

You won’t want to miss this year’s annual ESTHER banquet at the Grand Meridian (no Packers game)! Our dynamic keynote speaker is Rev. Douglas Walker, the national coordinator for criminal justice reform for the General Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist Church. More details are coming, but mark your calendar today!

Administration

Foreign Currency

Occasionally we find foreign currency in our collection plate. Although we appreciate all contributions to First Congregational, The Business Bank and other local banks charge a considerable amount to convert foreign currency to US dollars, often more than the worth of the gift. Please take this into consideration before offering a donation of foreign currency.
