On May 18th, the class of 2012 was presented by Principal Jim Berry for Florence Christian

School’s 34th commencement services. Thirty-eight seniors walked the platform to receive their di-ploma, a personalized Bible, and a rose to give to their family in honor of this special celebration. Words of wisdom and sentiment were given to their classmates by co-valedictorians Trevor Gibson and Christopher Coker. Pastor Monroe encouraged and challenged the graduates to be faithful to what they have learned at FCS based on God’s Word. Christopher Coker was presented the FCS EAGLE AWARD. This award is given to the senior who displays Christian character in all areas of his life. The exercises closed with Joshua Skelton leading the graduates in the turning of the tassels.

The morning of May 18th, another group of

graduates received their diplomas for their academic achievement of completing Kindergarten. Sixty-one young kindergarteners will begin a journey in their lives where they can look forward to learning new academics, building relationships, athletics, fine arts, chapels, and learning to serve others by using their God-given talents and skills. Prior to receiving their diplomas, the 5K classes presented a program that gave family and friends a glimpse of what the students learned during the year. It was a full house in the gym!

The 3K and 4K students presented their year end

program on Thursday, May 17th. The young students sang songs and recited scripture verses and poems for a full house audience. The presentation was sam-ples of things they had learn this year in school. They didn’t miss a beat!

As the final days of school wound down, I found in speaking to many parents, faculty and students...that many agreed this year had come and gone rather quickly. It never ceases to amaze me in looking back to see how God continues to bless Florence Christian School. We do not take God’s blessings for

granted as He continues to keep his hand upon us even in these difficult times we are living in. On May 18th, FCS graduated 61 kindergartners and another 36 seniors. Below you will see many of the accomplishments and activities of our students and how God has used them in not only academic achievements but in service to their school and community. Dr. Bryan Smith of Bob Jones University spoke at the Florence Baptist Temple recently. He challenged the FCS students by saying “the best thing you can do for your school is to go and live a Christ-like life”. Our students of all ages have the opportunity to impact the world for Christ as they grow and develop both academically and spiritually...that is my prayer as we look forward to another year in the fall. May you and your family have a safe summer!

- All grades organized a minimum of one service project that was done outside the school. - Over 140 elementary students did personal service projects as part of the Patriot’s Points challenge. - Elementary students made cards and goodies for local fire men in honor of 911 Remembrance. - Student Government sponsored two special events and assisted in several school wide and elementary programs. - FCS Veteran’s Day recognition and gifts. - Collected non-perishable items to fill 40 boxes of food for FBT Living Christmas Tree Food Drive. - Sent care packages to soldiers and FBT missionary families. - Gave over 240 inches of hair to national organization Children with Hair Loss.

Four juniors represented FCS in the

16th Annual Florence Darlington Technical College Math Competition on Friday, Feb-ruary 24th. FCS won first place, compet-ing with 14 public and private schools in the Pee Dee area. The math team in-cluded: Sponsor Jimmy Miles, Dennis Shin, Skylar Adams, Austin Johnson and Luke Sterling. Each player received $100 along with a personal trophy; the school was awarded $1,500 and an overall trophy.

Students in 6th, 8th and 10th grade participated in the annual FCS Science fair in February. The following students

FCS took twelve participants to

Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia on January 19th for the 2012 SCISA Regional Spelling Bee. After competing against ten other schools, FCS was named the first place winner with a total of 42 points. Four students qualified to compete in the SCISA State Spelling Bee: Madison Setser (3rd grade), Alexan-der Rishmawi (4th grade), George Rishmawi (4th grade), and Janalyn Berry (5th grade). Bryson Little (3rd grade) placed 4th.

The other FCS participants were: Jordan Snipes, Nicholas Wood, Savan-nah Gaymon, Madyson Revell, Dylan Jones, and Edwin McFadden. The schools in the regional competition included: All Saints Episcopal Day School, Barnwell Academy, Ben Lippen Schools, Carolina Academy, Florence Christian, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Jefferson Davis Academy, Laurence Manning Academy, Marlboro Academy New Heights, and The King’s Academy. FCS placed 5th overall in the State Bee and Madison Setser placed third. Congratulations for a job well done, spellers!!

FCS placed second overall in the

high school categories of the SCISA Literary Meet, Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at Holly Hill. There were over 100 private schools represented at the SCISA meet. FCS came home with five individ-ual winners including: Bryson Little (3rd grade) placed first and Kylie Stewart (3rd grade) placed third in the Storytelling division; Rebecca Kelley (10th grade) and Maddie Sansbury (10th grade) placed 2nd in the Oral Interpretation and Extemporaneous Speaking divisions; Hunter Eason (9th grade) placed second in the Essay division. The FCS student government was awarded Student Council of the Year (Division 1) for

the second consecutive year at the annual SCISA Student Association Convention which was held March 5-6th in Myrtle Beach. Seniors Chris Coker, Alyssa Holbrooks, and Seth Harrelson led the convention as their final duties serving on the state SCISA board of offi-cers. Twenty-seven SCSIA schools participated in convention. The two day event included a variety of activities, candidate elections and the installations of new officers for the 2012-13 school year. The FCS officers who attended the convention included: Chris Coker, Seth Harrelson, Alyssa Holbrooks, Kayla Thompson, Emily Ham, Elizabeth Chard, Austin Johnson, Moriah Berry, Hanna Adams, Kayce Erwin, James McClary, Gordon Washington, Hudson Jep-ertinger, Caroline McAlister, Danielle Evans, David Coker, Garrett Coker, Brooke Haywood, and Kacey Medlin.

FCS sponsor Michelle Johnson has worked with the students throughout the year in planning class and school wide events. She stated, “it is always a pleasure to accom-pany our students to various events...they have proudly repre-sented our school.”

President and founder of the organization Reasons for Hope (rforh), Dr. Carl Kerby spoke to the 6th-12th grade students and a number of guests on February 20-22. Kerby was a founding Board Member of Answers in Genesis, the organization who originated the Creation Museum that is located in northern Ken-tucky. Kerby served 15 years with AiG before stepping out in faith to become the president

and founder of Reasons for Hope. Kerby’s passion is to proclaim the authority and accuracy of the Bible and to engage minds and hearts of believers and unbelievers in today’s culture of the

realities of the Word of God. Kerby visited various

classes for a time of Q & A where he challenged their thinking in defending their faith.

Mrs. McAlister assigned her 11th grade English class to write on what makes a good speaker. All but one student wrote about Dr. Kerby. Below are a few comments:

Dr. Carl Kerby is an excellent speaker in his presentation and testimony for Christ and the truth of God’s Word.

Dr. Kerby spoke to the teens, not at us….on a level of understanding. His messages were also convicting!

He really opened my eyes to a lot of different issues.

On April 30th students in 1st-12th grades

assembled in the gym to watch 22 girls, a young boy, teens and moms have a mini-mum of 8 inches of their hair cut.. A total of 241 inches of hair was cut and donated to

Children with Hair Loss, a national organization that provides wigs for children. Third grade teacher Jackie Smith shared from her heart the reality of losing

one’s hair from her personal experience in 2008 when she was treated for cancer. FCS mom and cosmetologist Barbi Lee organ-ized a team of 17 local cosmetologists who volun-teered their time and talent to cut and style the participants’ hair. The project was sponsored by the Student Government. We hope to do this event again next year!

Over 400 students from 68

schools across the state of SC audi-tioned for the SC Elementary Honor Choir. A panel of judges selected 220 students, including two of our FCS students, Erin Dozier and Emilee Cox. They practiced after school one day a week for four

months to prepare six songs for the concert held in Charles-ton on Saturday, February 4th. The guest conductor, Tom Shelton, of Greensboro, NC, is recognized for his accomplish-ments as a children's choral director, clinician, and com-poser. The audience, made up of parents and friends and SC music teachers, gave the stu-dents a standing ovation at the

conclusion of the concert.

Florence Christian School participated in the SCISA Music Festival, Thursday, March 8th at the University of South Carolina School of Music in Columbia. The 130 FCS musicians were among hundreds of students statewide that performed in the annual state festival. FCS participants included: the Elementary String Ensemble, Elementary Choir, Middle School Girls' Ensemble, and High School Choir. These groups all received an excellent rating. Solo Medalists: GOLD—Emilee Cox, Amber Davis, Melinda Dersch, Stephanie Dersch, Danielle Evans, CJ Fuller, Teil Fuller, Georgeanna Kelley, Abigail Sansbury, Frankie Slemmer, Evan Tan, and Isaac Whang. SILVER—Janalyn Berry, Kristin Bryant, Savannah Gaymon, Tori Hewitt, Rebecca Kelley, Bethany McArthur, Hannah McInnes, Morgan Warner. BRONZE—Abby Buie, Sarah Medlin, and Maegan Miles. FCS Music instructor Leslie Evans stated, “We are very proud of our students who participated; we congratulate them for a job well done!”

A cast of more than forty-two students performed the timeless classic The King and I in front of two sold out audiences, March 22-23. Rehearsal began in January where the

cast worked numerous hours in preparing the pro-duction. The large cast consisted of students from age 5 to 17 and was led by two seniors, Rachel King (Anna) and Elizabeth Chard (wife). In addition to the performers, a number of students as-sisted with behind the scenes tasks including ticket sales, concessions, lighting and sound. The junior and senior high school drama classes were involved as well. The play was under the direction of Katrina King with assis-tance from Megan Kendall and Leslie Evans.


Over thirty students were inducted to

the Junior and Senior Beta Club on Wednesday, April 4th. Students must achieve and maintain a 90 average to meet the national requirements.

Junior Frankie Slemmer won the local VFW Post 3181 “Voice of Democracy” speech competition. Frankie went on to compete on the district level with his speech “Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military?” He was among several students from pri-vate and public schools in Florence County. Congratulations, Frankie!

CAMPOUT ‘12 Crew with CM Founder Ken Ham

Two buses with sixty-nine 6th graders, par-ents and FCS staff traveled to Kentucky and Ohio for CAMPOUT ‘12 on April 25th! It was a three day adventure of fun with Dr. Carl Kerby and his son, an exciting REDS baseball game, and an overnight stay in the Creation Museum. It was a packed three days of fun but also a time of seeing God’s Word in a historical view. The trip will be long remembered in the hearts

of both students and adults! Thank you to all the parents who served as chaperones...you made the trip an even greater success! Plans are in the works for CAMPOUT ‘13...so get ready rising 6th graders!

FCS held its spring athletic awards, Wednesday, May 9th, in the church audito-rium. Over 150 athletes were recognized for their participation in the winter/spring FCS athletic programs: Cheerleading, Basketball, Girls’ Softball, Baseball, Soc-cer, Golf, and Track & Field. Coaches from each sport gave a sum-mary of the team’s season and concluded by presenting specialty awards.

Mr. Keefe awarded the Christian Character Award to the male and female athlete who displayed Chris-tian character not only during the play of their sport but off the field or

court as well. Congratulations to the 2012 Christian Character Award recipients Christopher Coker and Emily Ham.

Congratulations to FCS soft-ball coach John Brown for his 200th win, Saturday, May 12th at the SCISA State Softball Play-Offs and to the Lady Eagles! They had a great run in the state play-offs with three big wins!

Thank you to Jimmy Miles for his dedication and time in estab-lishing the FCS football program in 2006. Mr. Miles put numerous hours of time and effort in laying the foundation for the program. As FCS’s Academic Principal, Mr. Miles has decided to devote all his time and effort in the area of school wide academics, as well as, continuing to teach the college math courses.

FCS welcomes Darlington native, Neil Minton as head of the FCS football program. Minton is head coach for the varsity football program and will assist in other sports. He will teach in the area of Social Studies. Minton comes from Colleton Prepara-tory Academy in Walterboro, South Carolina, where he has worked for eleven years. He and his wife Stacy have one son, two-year-old Riley.
