have to be produced, distributed anddelivered quickly and on time for an efficient economy to function. In themanufacturing industries where these goods are handled and stored, thewarehouses, their loading bays etc., all need to have their oors designedand installed to suit the specic conditions of each area’s operation.

    LARGE QUANTITIES OF GOODS

It is always essential to ensure that the stresses imposedare all able to be safely accommodated by the ooringsystem. Therefore, fully understanding each area’soperations and then dening all of the performancerequirements for the oor is most important. Thisincludes the required mechanical impact, abrasion andchemical resistance, thermal exposure plus ease ofcleaning, and dust prevention, etc.

    NEW BUILDINGS

Sikaoor® -3 QuartzTop P is applied as dry powdersdirectly onto the surface of the freshly laid concrete, where they are power oat nished, and then hardenmonolithically with the base concrete. This creates anintegrated and extremely hardwearing oor. Concretecuring agents, plus surface hardening and sealingcompounds complete the Sikaoor® range.

Additionally, Sika® EpoCem technology can be used onrelatively new “green” or existing damp concrete, whereit acts as a temporary moisture barrier to reduce waitingtime for the application of vapour-tight oor systems.

REFURBISHMENTCementitious, self-smoothing Sikaoor® - 81 EpoCemis used to provide a uniform and level surface for theapplications of oor nishes.

These vapour permeable and rapid drying screeds providevery economic solutions. Sika® EpoCem Technology isagain frequently used in refurbishment projects when theexisting oors have rising or high moisture contents but

    need to be over-coated quickly.

RACKING AREASSikaoor® solutions provide a bright colored oor that canbe installed in a wide range of thickness and with a varietyof surface textures. These oors are seamless, non-porous and non-dusting, with good chemical resistance.Their properties make the oor hygienic and easy to cleanas well as being hard and very durable, so they are ideallysuited for use in dry process and racked storage areas.

COLD STORAGE AREASSikaoor® solutions can provide durable ooring solutionsfor cold storage areas even in the most severe conditionswith extreme mechanical, chemical and thermal exposure.

Sikaoor® solutions CANPROVIDE DURABLE FLOORINGSOLUTIONS FOR COLDSTORAGE AREAS EVEN IN THEMOST SEVERE CONDITIONS

    WITH EXTREME MECHANICAL,CHEMICAL AND THERMALEXPOSURE.

ooring systems in manufacturingfacilities are generally in the production areas. These oors not onlyhave to withstand severe exposure, including mechanical, chemicaland thermal stresses, but also need to provide the right degree of slipresistance to meet health and safety requirements

    THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES FOR

The Sikaoor® systems applied in production areas arebased predominantly on Cement, Epoxy and Polyurethane

resin technologies, which are developed in our laboratoriesfrom more than 40 years of practical experience. Forspecial requirements, different binder and ller systemsare combined to achieve specic properties, e.g.Polyurethane and Cement in the Sikaoor® PurCem rangefor high temperature and chemical resistance in wetenvironments.

DRY AND WET AREASMost production areas can be divided into ‘dry’ or ‘wet’processing areas. Flooring systems in ‘wet’ process areas

generally require a higher degree of slip-resistance, whichmust also be easily cleaned, and yet be resistant to the

water and any chemical exposure. In the production areasof the food and beverage industries in particular, a cleanoor is obviously of crucial importance to facilitate thenecessary hygienic working environment.

‘Dry’ processing areas also often require a balance orcompromise to be made between ease of cleaning and slipresistance to meet the requirements for efficiency andhygiene, plus health and safety.

AREAS WITH EXTREME EXPOSURE(COMBINATIONS OF WET CONDITIONS, CHEMICALS,TEMPERATURES AND ABRASION)Sika has a complete range of ooring solutions forindustrial facilities that are required to be durableunder extreme exposures and conditions of use. Theseconditions can vary from severe chemical attack withthermal shock exposure in the food industry, to high pointloading and abrasion in the automotive industry.

The Sikaoor® PurCem range will perform under themost demanding service environments and can meet allof these and many other different individual exposurerequirements with design exibility. This includes a fullrange of non-slip / anti-skid proles.

MINIMUM DOWNTIME FOR PRODUCTIONEach day or even each hour of downtime in productioncan be very expensive in both new construction and inrefurbishment projects. It is always therefore essential tonish all of the ooring work within the shortest possible

time, but still ensuring the required performance anddurability. Using the fast curing Sikaoor® Curehard - 24for oor maintenance and refurbishment projects canreduce down time to a minimum. Sikaoor® systemscan also be designed to withstand all of the otherrequirements and conditions with various degrees of slipresistance and surfaces that are easy to clean

SPECIFICATION None of the specic conductivity or

    electrical resistance values mentioned

in any of the International or NationalStandards in the table shown are mandatory. The values can be adapted to meet local requirements by theresponsible authorities. Before applying an ESD or dissipative/conductive ooring system, Sika always recommends a detailedassessment of at least the following parameters, then the mostappropriate values can be determined and agreed by all of theparties involved:

Limits for the electrical resistance and body voltagegeneration Methods and conditions of measurement Equipment to make these measurements Any applicable Standards or specications

WHAT IS AN ESD EVENT AND WHAT DOES IT DO?An ESD event is an Electrostatic Discharge. This is basically a spark(a micro lightning-bolt in effect). which passes from one chargedconductive surface to another. This incredibly rapid transfer ofwhat had previously been a static (non-moving) charge can causeres or explosions, create heat, light and even sounds. It is thispotentially unseen, unfelt or unheard ‘micro lightning’ spark thatcan occur without warning, which must be prevented or controlled.

PARKING STRUCTURES TODAYParking has become a vital part of today’s mobilecommunity, especially in metropolitan areas includingairports, all of which are growing at an ever faster rate. This means continually providing more parking spacesby building new car parks and frequently extending andrefurbishing existing ones.

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO PARK?

Successful parking structures are designed to meet theuser’s demands, which include feeling safe and welcome, plus knowing that their cars are in a secure environment.Given the choice, people always park in a brightly lit carpark, where they feel their property is best looked afterand safe.

INVESTIGATION AND SURVEY OF EXISTING PARKINGSTRUCTURESMulti-storey and underground car parks are both subjectto many different stresses. In order to discover theroot causes of distress and deterioration, it is therefore

essential to carry out a professional Condition Surveyand assessment. It is obviously important to balancethe cost of the investigative work with the benets thatthe information derived will provide; but an appropriatesurvey and assessment is often key to successfullymaintaining and extending the service life of an existingparking structure.

REFURBISHMENTMost of existing multi-storey car parks are predominantlyof reinforced concrete construction, many of which havea history of early deterioration, structural defects andshortcomings in safety. This is due to poor design, poorconstruction, low standards of maintenance and repair,or a combination of all three. Their exposure is moresimilar to that of bridges than the building codes theywere designed to, and as a result they have deterioratedquickly, particularly due to reinforcement corrosionfollowing the ingress of water and de-icing salts. Theclosure of many areas and even whole car parks forcostly repair or replacement has been necessary. Thesebad experiences have served to emphasize the need forimproved performance in car park design, constructionand the materials used, in order to ensure the increaseddurability and safety of both new and existing structures.

NEW BUILDModern parking structures are essential and integratedinto a cities’ architecture. They are frequently built using‘fast-track’ construction techniques, with as much off-siteconstruction as possible, to reduce the disruption in theseareas.

Therefore precast and prefabricated sections of steelframes with reinforced concrete decks and stairways are

usually combined in composite structures for new carparks. The adequate protection of new build car parks willprevent cost intensive refurbishment being required in thefuture.

THE ADEQUATE PROTECTION OFNEW BUILD CAR PARKS WILLPREVENT COST INTENSIVE

exposure and performance requirements in industrialand commercial facilities, the application of a protective wall coating is frequently necessary. The specic demands on the wall can obviously vary according to the specic industry andthe function of the area and the processes that are carried on inside it.

    FOR A GREAT MANY DIFFERENT

The electronic and optical industries need to have

Cleanroom conditions on the wall surfaces, withminimal VOC’s/ AMC’s or particle emissions. Plusthey must be easy to clean and ensure the arearemains dust free. For this increasingly demandingmarket Sikagard Wallcoat N, a waterborne epoxycoating, already has all of the necessary certicationand approvals. Sikagard Wallcoat N is also theideal solution for food and beverage plants in theareas where food stuffs are produced, these usuallyhave a cleaning regime using high pressure water- jetting with strong detergents and cleaning agents.Sikagard Wallcoat N perfectly combines goodchemical resistance, mechanical resistance and therequired ease of cleaning.

Breweries and other drink production areas,

together with many other food production andprocessing facilities have areas where the humidityis constantly very high. The walls in these areasrequire wall coatings with anti-fungal and anti-bacterial protection. The Sikagard Hygienic Coatingsrange has the ideal characteristics and performanceproperties for these important areas. Plus they arealso easy to apply by brush, roller or airless spray andadhere to most common wall building substrates.Sikagard Hygienic Coatings are resistant to moistureand elastomeric so they are able to accommodatethermal or structural movement without crackingor aking. These coatings have been fully tested inaccordance with many European standards includingEN 13501 (Behaviour in Fire). ISO 846 (biologicalresistance), EN 18033 (Wet scrub resistance andopacity)

THE CONCRETE SUBSTRATE IS THE BASIS OF A NEW FLOOR,WHETHER IT IS NEW OR EXISTING.

MEASURING THE COMPRESSIVESTRENGTHThe compressive strength of the substrate should

not be less than 25 N/ mm2 (25 MPa). To meetdened loads, a higher strength may be required. It is advisable to take a number of measurementsacross the oor and in all parts of the proposedinstallation to conrm the compressive strength i.e.with a Schmidt hammer.

Thorough inspection and assessment are essential to determineits condition and the necessary surface preparation for asuccessful ooring system to be applied. The concrete substrateis the basis of a new oor, whether it is new or existing.

    SUBSTRATE MOISTURE CONTENT

It is extremely important to measure the substratemoisture content because cement bound substratesshould normally only be over-coated at a moisturelevel of < 4% pbv. ASTM D4263 is a simple testwith a Polyethylene-sheet of at least 1 m2 taped tothe concrete surface. This should be left in positionfor at least 24 hours, prior to removal and testing.Moisture Meters such as the Tramex ConcreteEncounter CME 4 can then give a clear reading of the

moisture content as a % pbv. Moisture content > 4%by volume, or visible rising moisture (condensation)on the bottom of the sheet, indicates the needfor additional drying time or the use of Sikaoor°EpoCem’ Technology.

    AMBIENT CONDITIONS

If atmospheric and climatic factors are ignored, serious ooring defects such as poor adhesion, watermarks, blistering, irregular surfaces and inadequatecuring may occur. The following must therefore bechecked and recorded several times a day, before, during and after application to ensure that they arewithin the system limitations:

Ambient temperature (air) Substrate temperature Relative humidity (air) Dew point

    PREPARATION AND CLEANING

If not fully removed, any weak areas or cementlaitance on the substrate will reduce the adhesion, performance and durability of any oor system.Concrete surfaces must therefore always bemechanically prepared to a sound substrate. Anydirt, dust, oils, grease or any other contaminants willalso reduce or prevent adhesion of any topping, sothese must also be removed by thorough cleaningand vacuuming of all residues.

MEASURING THE COHESIVESTRENGTHConcrete oors generally have some cement laitance

with low cohesive strength in the top few mm.This weak layer must always be removed duringthe substrate preparation. Withstanding stressesfrom concrete shrinkage, thermal shock or loadingrequires a minimum cohesive strength. This shouldbe a ≥ 1.5 N/mm2 (≥ 1.5 MPa) and this is usuallymeasured by a number of Pull-off tests across theoor.

SUBSTRATE MOISTURE CONTENTIt is extremely important to measure the substrate moisture contentbecause cement bound substrates should normally only be over-

coated at a moisture level of < 4% pbv. ASTM D4263 is a simple testwith a Polyethylene-sheet of at least 1 m2 taped to the concretesurface. This should be left in position for at least 24 hours, prior toremoval and testing. Moisture Meters such as the Tramex ConcreteEncounter CME 4 can then give a clear reading of the moisturecontent as a % pbv. Moisture content > 4% by volume, or visiblerising moisture (condensation) on the bottom of the sheet, indicatesthe need for additional drying time or the use of Sikaoor® EpoCemTechnology.

A durable bond must be achieved between the new ooring system and thesubstrate, which requires a clean and contaminant free, dry (according tothe system requirements) and sound surface to be mechanically preparedto remove any cement laitance, loose or friable particles and provide theprole required for the selected oor system. The nal surface should bevacuumed to remove any dust prior to the application.
