the Catchment
Project Objective : • integrate land and water management planning using an integrated flood
risk management approach to improve flood preparedness and management within the Nadi Basin.
• Help local communities and other stakeholders to improve their resilience to flooding through an improved understanding of the river network and floodplain interactions
• Designed to raise awareness to flooding issues
• Project will interlink with other activities working on flood management and risk reduction
• Model for other catchments and sharing of lessons .

Installation of EWS (Mobile texting , alarm/
siren) in Nadi Town
Warning Alarm System(underconstruction )
• Stage one waterlevel warning sent from Flosys Server by text message to key staff to give them a “heads up”
• Stage two warning sent to key staff when things get serious
• Stage three warning text sent to key staff along with an activation message to the siren(s) at a level just below inundation.•Once the sirens have been activated it will sound for a period of time and shut down. Flosys Server will continue to activate the sirens on and off until some one stops them or the river level recedes.
•Public awareness of the warning system and testing can be achieved by setting up an automatic (or manual) activation at a nominated time and frequency.

MOU formally signed with TOR – May, 13th
District Officer Nadi / Act for Peace / LWRM
Formal Agreement Objective
• Establish Community Disaster Management Committees (CDMC)
• train in Disaster Management (DM) • Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) primarily focused on
Flood management..
To facilitate the completion of:Hazard & Capacity SurveyDRR Action PlanCommunity Disaster Response ArrangementsCommunity Hazard MapConduct a Simulation exercise for community.
Implementation•10 Vulnerable villages identified •Collaboration with Provincial Development –Roko’s Office
• Awareness for the whole village•10 members identified•5 days training •Development of Community Disaster Response Plan •Assimilation exercise – Acid test of CDRP•Handing over of the CDRP to District Officer Nadi / Commissioner West / NDMO /PMU
Ripple effect…
Launch of Water Literacy Partnering with Library Service of Fiji & Department of Education•IWRM QUIZ •IWRM Debates•IWRM Talent Quest- Major Activity – “book writing-showcased at the booth”-working towards publication•IWRM Oratory – major success , expanded to schools outside the catchment (Agri show)
