Flipside Circus trainers get set for Mt MorganSchool kids and residents in Mount Morgan will have the chance to learn circus skills, with the help of two professional trainers from Brisbane’s Flipside Circus, as part of the new Artists in Residence program.

The Flipside Circus trainers will spend almost two weeks in the community, where they will work with schools, community organisations, community members and families to develop their circus skills. The program will conclude with a community performance on the final day.

Artists in Residence is a collaborative project between CQUniversity’s Widening Participation team, Creative Regions (a regional not-for-profit arts management and production company) and Creative Capricorn (a joint initiative of the Australia Council for the Arts, Arts Queensland and Rockhampton Regional Council).

It aims to highlight students’ achievements in the circus workshops to inspire longer-term interest in the Arts and engagement in education.

Mount Morgan events will be between November 19-30 at the School of Arts and the Green Shed.

CQUniversity’s Widening Participation Program Manager, Stacey Wallace, says the program aims to enliven local communities to participate and celebrate possibilities through the Arts and to promote lifelong learning.

Director of Creative Regions Rod Ainsworth says: “We’re aiming to establish longer-term relationships with communities to support their artistic and cultural development, and to encourage educational participation through engaged learning.”

Chair of Rockhampton Regional Council’s Communities Committee, Cr Rose Swadling, says it is a wonderful opportunity for the young people of Mount Morgan to be included in a regionally focused opportunity.

“I think this is a great opportunity for Mount Morgan. We all know that involvement in the Arts is great in terms of educational outcomes for young people and in bringing the community together, and I look forward to seeing the results of the residency.”

This program is supported by Arts Queensland, Creative Capricorn, Australia Council for the Arts, Rockhampton Regional Council, Central Queensland Indigenous Development and Flipside Circus.

Having had the opportunity to visit Broken Hill, A CLEAN AND TIDY TOWN, it was amazing to learn that the discovery of the silver lode was by a jackaroo, named Philip Charley whereas our Mount was by a stockman, William Mackinlay.

The history of the Mount tells of a six man Syndicate, Broken Hill commences with seven men who came from diverse backgrounds, intellect and foresight to form the first mining company, Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd (BHP.) in 1885. While Hall and D’Arcy were very famous for Mount Morgan, Charles Rasp and George McCulloch were for Broken Hill. McCulloch established the B.H. Regional Art Gallery and also funded the first B.H. Hospital. Outside the B.H. City Council Chambers stands the busts of the Syndicate of Seven.

The city of B.H. is known as a city of resilience, which continues to thrive and prosper long after the exodus of BHP (The Big Australian) in 1939 when BHP thought the Broken Hill was completely mined out – how wrong they were. Today B. H. has a life of more than 30 years, employs 600 men in the mine, a population of 19000 but has amenities for 33000.

B.H. has a history of our early explorers who travelled through it- namely, Captain Charles Sturt, Burke and Wills, Major Mitchell and others. Its latest creative venture is the old power station as a movie studio where films such as Mad Max 2, A Town like Alice, and Priscilla Queen of the Desert were made and many others.

On display in the Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum is “The Silver Tree”. The Tree was made by Silversmith Henry Steiner in 1880 which stands 66 cm in height, 41 cm in width and contains 8.5kg of silver. The Tree was once owned by Charles Rasp of the original seven. It is a must see for every visitor. B.H has numerous art galleries which includes the Pro Hart Gallery.

Broken Hill also is a base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service which services the vast outback and the School of Air operates a classroom that covers a million square kilometres with a student population of about 80 students from the outback stations.

Today Broken Hill does not depend on the riches of the mine but on the tourist industry. Even though situated in the outback it is easily accessible by air, sealed highways, buses and the railway which includes the Indian Pacific. It is thriving on this industry but Broken Hill offers the tourist a wealth of experiences, like our own town. One experience to witness and enjoy are the sunsets of the Outback, fantastic. Plan your trip for the cooler months though.

Over $700 has been donated to the RACQ Capricorn Rescue Helicopter Service, thanks to a local fundraiser and the generosity of the Mount Morgan community.

The sum was raised through a Bowls Fun Night last month, sponsored by the Mount Morgan Freemasons and supported by the Mount Morgan Welfare Bowls Club.

The event welcomed around 50 people to the Welfare Bowls Club on the evening; with bowling enthusiasts and members of the community eager to join in on the fun and raise funds for a much deserving group.

The evening included games of bowls, a sausage sizzle and multidraw raffles. Prizes for the evening included hand crafted tool boxes, lunch boxes and dustpans; crafted by local resident Joe James, with the assistance of Henry Stokes.

An impressive total of $754 was raised through the event, donated to the RACQ Capricorn Rescue Helicopter Service.

CEO of the RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service, Kay Becker, said the funds will be put towards the direct operating costs of the helicopter.

Talent – it was certainly in no short supply at the Mount Morgan State High School last Friday evening, as students of Mount Morgan High showcased their skills in dance, music, singing and drama, as part of the annual Variety Night.

Around 150 people attended the event, with family, friends and members of the community eager to witness the vast talents of the local students.

One of the key events in the school calendar each year, the annual School Variety Night provides a unique opportunity for students to share their talents with their peers and local community.

Hosted by Mount Morgan High students, Curtly Toby and Jayden Cowl, the evening featured a range of quality entertainment and inspiring performances; including monologues, comedic acts, dance routines and a variety of vocal pieces.

Like many in attendance on the evening, Mount Morgan High Drama Teacher, Anna Kahler said she was blown away with the performances by the students.

“The students did such a wonderful job.” Miss Kahler said.

“They are a great group of kids and put a lot of work into the night.”

Miss Kahler, who was also the staff coordinator for the event, said the talent and dedication of the students took away the difficulty in organising the evening.

“The night and the program weren’t difficult to put together– the students are just so talented.”

The Mount Morgan State High School would like to thank all who came along on the night and supported the students.

The countdown is on for the 30 senior students of Mount Morgan State High School, with just a little over a week remaining until graduation day.

The students will attend school for the last time next Friday, November 16; taking part in a final assembly. The group will then swap their uniforms for formal wear, celebrating their major milestone with the 2012 Senior Formal on the Friday evening.

Mount Morgan State High welcomes all interested community members to come along and see the official arrival of the Seniors, which will take place at the front of the School of Arts at 6:30pm (Friday November 16).

Earlier this month, local residents, Nicholai von Tonslamann (president of the Mount Morgan Multicultural Mob) and Sharyn Bartley attended the official launch of Settlement Works; a publication that celebrates the successes of regional settlement of refugees in the Rockhampton region.

The publication was officially launched by Chris Bowen MP at an official ceremony held in Rockhampton on Monday, October 15.

Elizabeth Rose Pittman, born at the Rockhampton Base Hosptial on the 27th of September 2012,

19th of October.

Russell and Janet were joined by close family and friends for the special occasion, some travelling as far

as Bundaberg to take part.

Russell and Janet exchanged their vows at a ceremony held at HIM House Church, conducted by

Diane Miltenburg JP (Qual) Marriage Celebrant.

A reception followed, held at the Grand Hotel.

Happy birthday to local resident, Miss Irene Sturgess who celebrated her 80th birthday on Sunday,

October 28th.

Miss Sturgess was joined by family and friends to celebrate the milestone, treated to a get together held

at the Mount Morgan State High School.

The birthday girl, who is known to much of the community for her many years of teaching, was also

invited to attend parade at both the State Primary and State High School, in recognition of the special

occasion (Miss Sturgess teaching at both of the schools for many years).

Miss Sturgess began her teaching career here in Mount Morgan in the 1950s, and continues to provide

relief teaching today around the region.

People in Profile: the Ramm family

Most of the profiles written for the Argus are about individual people or couples but every now and then an entire family or a family business reaches a peak that deserves recognition. In November, fifty years ago, a business started in Mount Morgan and is still going strong today. It may have changed its name over the decades but the friendly service is still as strong as it ever was.

Keith Ronald Ramm, born on the 9th of October 1949 and William John Ramm born on the 18th of April 1953 moved to Mount Morgan with their parents, Annie and Percy Ramm, when Keith was thirteen years of age and John was ten. Keith and John were both born in Rockhampton. In their younger years Keith preferred to be out growing vegetables than playing sport and that has never changed. He still grows vegetables on his hobby farm. When asked about what he likes to grow most Keith laughingly replies “You can’t eat flowers so I grow vegetables. I sold a few to a local vegetable shop when I had extra but mostly grew vegetables for the table.” John was more of a sports person playing cricket, baseball and football in his school years. Once leaving school he didn’t find the time for sport though. Both boys went to work for their parents.

When asked about what mischief the boys got up to in their youth, Keith and John both laughingly replied “We were good boys. We went straight from school to work. No time for mischief.” They both married and stayed with the family business. Keith and his wife, Beryl have been married for around twenty five years. “I was a late starter and my wife gave me two lovely step children” Keith states with a grin. John met his wife Rhonda when she was working for his parents. They have been married around forty years and still work side by side.

John and Keith work on the sales side of the business while Rhonda keeps the bookwork and computer side of the business in order. John and Rhonda have two sons that kept them busy over the years, being involved in Scouts where John was the cub leader for approximately eleven years. Their sons were also into air league and swimming. John was time keeper and Rhonda saw to the secretarial side of the swimming club. They also have two lovely granddaughters.

Originally PW and A Ramm was an independent business that began trading in November 1962. Percy Ramm bought Burnett’s Taylor Shop near the Grand Hotel and made it into an electrical shop. Selling toasters, jugs, washing machines, radiograms, battery radios and reel-to-reel tape recorders kept the family busy. In the late 60’s or early 70’s Keith remembers the cassette tapes coming into the store. At fourteen years of age he was putting up antennas for black and white televisions which was another first for Mount Morgan.

It was only four years ago that Keith actually stopped erecting antennas. John would ride his bicycle around fixing the old valve televisions and jokes “it’s been a few years since I stopped riding my bicycle to jobs.”

The early 70’s brought a new name change to the family business. It became Ramm’s Radio and TV. The boys carried on that name until eighteen years ago when they joined Retravision, The store in Morgan Street has recently changed in name once again and is now known as Ramm’s Bi-Rite Electrical.

Modern Technology has taken over the world and even though it isn’t Keith’s favourite part of the job he says “I don’t particularly like it but it’s good to sell.”

Keith and John both remember when the black and white televisions first came to Mount Morgan. “People would stand on the footpath watching the test pattern for ages totally fascinated” Keith reflects. “Colour TVs followed in 1975, then came the flat screen and digital TVs. It’s a big change” John explains as he thinks back through the years.

Working in the family business has been rewarding. The changes have been and will continue to be vast and varied. Holidays are something the Ramm family haven’t had time to even think about over the years. The only time away from the workplace has been for courses to keep up to date with business or sick days.

A book could be written on the Ramm family, and like in most cases, one article can not cover all aspects of such interesting versatile people. In future issues we hope to cover Mr Percy Ramm’s history with films, where he showed educational films even the opening of the Fitzroy River Bridge, the Usherettes taking people to their seats every Saturday night, the business cars from early days til now, Keith and John’s wedding details and much more. Until that time, you can find them busy working in their well earned family business.

Looking at the years of Pam’s life, we can state with confidence that Mount Morgan certainly played a strong part in her life; born, and spending all of her years in the local area.

Along with this, there is no mistaking that in return, Pam became a strong part in the life of the town as well; touching the lives of many throughout her years, devoting much of her time to assist others, and becoming a well respected and cherished local.

As a tribute to Pam, we provide a little into her life in Mount Morgan and the beautiful memory that she leaves with us today.

Pam’s life had many special moments; she was a loving daughter, sister, wife, partner, friend, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was also lovingly known to many, whether related or not, as “Aunty Pam”.

With many happy times in life however, Pam also encountered times of hardship. Though as difficult as some of the times were, she never lost her willingness to help others when and wherever she could.

Many in the community remember Pam for this and for her dedication in general.

With six children in tow, Pam was always kept busy; however she still enjoyed finding time to assist local organisations; including the Meals on Wheels and the Mount Morgan Historical Museum.

Pam was a life member of the Museum; working for over 30 years. She was also a member of the Community Services Club, which saw her spend many a day and night working alongside her parents conducting discos and functions for the youth of the town.

Of course, how could we touch on Pam’s life without discussing her well sought after cooking? She became well known in the area for her cooking and catering skills, and contributed tirelessly to many events; volunteering her services and her delicious caramel tarts and sweets.

Sadly Pam left us in October, but we can proudly state that she leaves behind a beautiful memory in the hearts and the community of the town she loved so dearly.

He was known for his devotion to the community, his years of service to local business and clubs, his cheeky sense of humour, quick wit and in general - his warm and lovable personality.

No matter how you describe him, there is no denying that Alex Teeney held a strong presence in the community of Mount Morgan.

From the Mount Morgan Rotary Club, we share some of the details of Alex’s colourful life in the committee, as a tribute to the much loved local identity.

Alex joined Rotary very shortly after it was established in Mount Morgan in 1956. He personified Rotary’s theme ‘service above self’. One of his favorite programs was ‘Group study exchange’ where young professionals could travel to other countries meeting fellow workers, exchanging ideas and making friends. Alex loved to show them around ‘The Mount’ and usually got them singing after a dinner meeting. He kept in touch with many of them and received Christmas cards from all over the world. He had travelled most of the world as a young sailor in the Royal Navy and was keen to return the hospitality he had been offered in many ports.

Alex didn’t understand the meaning ‘impossible’ and was reluctant to admit some of his projects were difficult. Back in the 80’s Mount Morgan was handed the railway station and a short section of line. The station needed painting and no funds were available. Alex organised Rotarians and we did the job over many weekends and late evenings.

A visit to Alex’s place in Gordon Street would reveal his deep involvement with Rotary. Under the house would be the Rotary wheel and all the other raffle accessories. Upstairs and his kitchen bench would be covered with Rotary correspondence from around the world and his Legacy paperwork. Then the phone would ring and someone would need electrical advice or assistance - never refused.

Have a visit to the Frank Golding lookout and marvel at how Alex organised and helped to shift 30 cubic metres of rock, by hand, in order to stabilise the site, a project completed after he had turned 80.

Alex was recognised by the club when he was awarded The Paul Harris Fellowship for his contribution to Rotary in the late 80’s. Okay guys and gals, summer is here and it’s BBQ time. As the days get longer and the temperature rises it’s time to crank up the good old gas BBQ - and this recipe works well on the flat BBQ plate or in a cast-iron pan in a side burner.

This is quick and easy, you pick the type of BBQ sauce you like and off you go, so please enjoy.

Ingredients:1 kg (4) Porterhouse Steaks (sirloin steak) 300 ml Chilli BBQ sauce or Smokey or plain BBQ sauce1 kg of par-boiled waxy potatoes2 teaspoon crushed GarlicSalt & pepper to taste

Method:Firstly, marinate the steak in the Select brand Chilli BBQ sauce for 3 hours (in zipper lock bag over night is better) then fry the steak in a cast iron pan. Start them in a super hot cast iron pan with a quick fast seal each side once. Once turned over, turn down to low, 3mins a side and then rest for 4 minutes in the pan, off the heat.

I then put them on the plate with garlic potato chunks, and the whole time I worked on the steaks, I shallow fried the par-boiled potatoes in olive oil with garlic in it.

When the potatoes are golden brown, drain in paper towel and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Then serve these beside the glazed porterhouse steak and enjoy with an ice cold larger or a very nice Shiraz.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I have, it tastes awesome but I will let you make up your own minds.
