Now we want to make the top canopy a bit droopy. Face select the top canopy and subdivide it 3 times.Press O to be in proportional editing or press the button at the bottom of the 3D view. Select the middle edges of the canopy.

Page 22: Flintstones Car Tutorial - Ultimaker blender car1.pdf · Flintstones Car Tutorial In this tutorial we will learn a few basics of modeling and animation in Blender. You will need to

Left click with your mouse on the blue Z arrow and hold it down while you scroll the middle mouse button to change the size of the proportional editing. Let go of the left mouse button when you are happy with it. Name this object Canopy. Now we are ready to color everything.

Select the front wheel. Go to the materials tab in the Properties panel and click on new.

By default the object is white. For now we will keep it that way. Click on the Texture tab. You can only add a texture to a material. Under the preview click both so that you can see the material and how it will look on the object. By default The texture is always pink.

NOTE if the canopy does not subdivide just delete it, add a plane and join it.

Page 23: Flintstones Car Tutorial - Ultimaker blender car1.pdf · Flintstones Car Tutorial In this tutorial we will learn a few basics of modeling and animation in Blender. You will need to

Change the type of texture to Stucci. Scroll down and change the pink color to gray. Play around with the texture if you want to change it. I changed the noise to hard but you can play around with it if you want. When you are done, change the name in the material tab to stone.

Select the back wheel and go to the materials tab. Click on the circle next to the word new and give it the same stone material. The texture is already part of that material.

Select both chairs and give them the stone material as well.

Now we will create the wood material. Select the right wood object and give it a new material. Change the name in the material to wood.Change the deffuse color to a dark orange color. Then give that material a texture. Preview both and change the color to a dark brown. Change the wood to Tri and select Band Noise.

Page 24: Flintstones Car Tutorial - Ultimaker blender car1.pdf · Flintstones Car Tutorial In this tutorial we will learn a few basics of modeling and animation in Blender. You will need to

Now select the dash. Give it the stone material. Then select the plus sign to add another material. Put the wood material as the second material.Tab into Edit mode and select a vertice on the steering wheel.

Keeping your mouse over the steering wheel press L to select everything that is linked. Then, in the material panel, make sure the second wood material is selected and click Assign. This assigns the texture to what you have selected.

Page 25: Flintstones Car Tutorial - Ultimaker blender car1.pdf · Flintstones Car Tutorial In this tutorial we will learn a few basics of modeling and animation in Blender. You will need to

Give the Canopy the wood material but change the color of the cloth to whatever you would like. You will have to box select or loop select the various faces because the poles are linked to the cloth. make a second material and assign it. Render it to see what it looks like and if you want to fix anything.

Now we are ready to animate the car.

The first thing we have to do is join all the objects that are not going to move. Shift select the Dash, the Canopy, both Chairs, and the Right wood, and join them as one object. Name this object Car. Make the origin fit the geometry.Your outliner window should look like this. (I added a hemi lamp so I could see the colors but you do not have to have the lighting yet.)You can choose to make the objects smooth by having them selected and clicking on smooth in the tool menu.

Page 26: Flintstones Car Tutorial - Ultimaker blender car1.pdf · Flintstones Car Tutorial In this tutorial we will learn a few basics of modeling and animation in Blender. You will need to

Go into Object mode and Camera perspective by pressing 0 in the number pad.

Shift select the two wheels and then Shift select the Car. Make sure you select the car last. We are going to parent the wheels to the car. Notice the wheels will become red and the last thing you select is orange. Click Ctrl P and Set the Parent to the Object. Now the Car is the parent and the Wheels are the children. If you move the car the wheels will follow, but the wheels will move seperately.

Page 27: Flintstones Car Tutorial - Ultimaker blender car1.pdf · Flintstones Car Tutorial In this tutorial we will learn a few basics of modeling and animation in Blender. You will need to

Go into the Left ortho view and select the front wheel.Make sure you have the origin to the geometry so the origin apears in the middle of the wheel. We are going to insert a key frame for the rotation of the wheel. We are only going to rotate it.First we have to make sure we know what axis the wheel is rotating on. In the number menu, click and drag the X, Y, and Z rotation to see which one rotates it correctly. I had to change the XYZ Euler to ZYX. And then the wheel rotates on the X Axis.

The rotation should look like the image on the right. X at 0 Y at 90 and Z at 0.

Go to the timeline window at the bottom of the screen. Change the End to 100 and make sure you are on frame 1.We are going to establish where the wheel starts the animation and we are going to set how many times it will rotate throughout the 100 frames.

Page 28: Flintstones Car Tutorial - Ultimaker blender car1.pdf · Flintstones Car Tutorial In this tutorial we will learn a few basics of modeling and animation in Blender. You will need to

Make sure you are in the first frame in the timeline and that your mouse is over the 3D window. Click I to insert a key frame. Then select only the rotation.

Now move to frame 100 in the timeline and then go to the number menu and type in 3600 for the Rotation on the X.Then click I to insert another Rotation keyframe. Now you made it so that it starts at 0 on the first frame then rotates around 3600 times to frame 100.The key frames look yellow. If you need to delete a key frame you can click Alt I.Now if you click play at the bottom of the Timeline the wheel should turn. If you have made it smooth, you may not be able to tell it will only show up when you render it with the textures.Do the same thing with the back wheel.

Page 29: Flintstones Car Tutorial - Ultimaker blender car1.pdf · Flintstones Car Tutorial In this tutorial we will learn a few basics of modeling and animation in Blender. You will need to

Now we will animate the Car.Select the car and make sure you are in the first frame. Go to camera perspective (0 in the number pad)Move the car on the Y axis so that it is mostly out of the camera frame. Insert a key frame by pressing I but this time we want to animate the location, the rotation and the scale so choose LocRotScale in the Insert Keyframe Menu.

Go to frame 30 in the Timeline, Move the car to about the middle of the camera view and insert another LocRotScale keyframe.

Page 30: Flintstones Car Tutorial - Ultimaker blender car1.pdf · Flintstones Car Tutorial In this tutorial we will learn a few basics of modeling and animation in Blender. You will need to

Move on to frame 40 I moved the car forward on the Y a bit and back on the X a bit. Then I rotated the car -30 on the Y Axis and -45 on the Z Axis. So it looked like the image below. Then insert the LocRotScale Keyframe.

Page 31: Flintstones Car Tutorial - Ultimaker blender car1.pdf · Flintstones Car Tutorial In this tutorial we will learn a few basics of modeling and animation in Blender. You will need to

Go to frame 50. Move the car back a bit on the Y Axis and then change the rotation of the Y Axis to 0 and the Z to -90.Insert another LocRotScale Keyframe.

now go to frame 100 and move the car all the way out of the camera view on the X Axis and insert another LocRotScale Keyframe.

Play the animation using the right facing triange at the bottom of the timeline.

Page 32: Flintstones Car Tutorial - Ultimaker blender car1.pdf · Flintstones Car Tutorial In this tutorial we will learn a few basics of modeling and animation in Blender. You will need to

Lets make the car even better before we render the animation.Go to the first frame of the animation, select the car and go into Edit mode. Select the top front edge of the canopy.Extrude it on the Z axis until it looks like this.

Then Shift select all the vertical edges of the squares we just created.

Click V to rip the seams and right click to confirm but keep the edges in the same place.

Now select the bottom edge of the canopy. You will have to Shift select them because they are no longer a loop. Subdivide the edges twice.Click on Smooth Vertex in the tool menu two or three times.

Play around with the tear in the back by subdividing edges, extruding them and moving vertices around to make it look more tattered.

Click on Recalculate Normals in the tool bar if the faces start to look funny. This flips them all so they are facing the same way.

Page 33: Flintstones Car Tutorial - Ultimaker blender car1.pdf · Flintstones Car Tutorial In this tutorial we will learn a few basics of modeling and animation in Blender. You will need to

Now you can add a setting. You need to add a road of some sort and you can add objects like rocks, buildings, mountains ets. if you wish. Add appropriate lighting. You can check to see if the lighting works by pressing render in the properties panel at different times in the animation.

Now you need to make sure that the animation is going to the right folder. In the render tab in the properties window scroll down and click on the small folder under output. select where you want to save your animation on your computer and give your file a name. (The H drive for Linden students)

Then click on where it says PNG and change it to AVI JPEG.

Page 34: Flintstones Car Tutorial - Ultimaker blender car1.pdf · Flintstones Car Tutorial In this tutorial we will learn a few basics of modeling and animation in Blender. You will need to

Now scroll back up to the top of the render tab and click Animation. This takes a little time to render. You will see the number of the frames at the top left of the render view. When it is doen rendering you can check the folder where you initially put your animation and you should see the avi jpeg movie there. I sometimes have trouble seeing it using Windows media player and I have to right click it to open it with quicktime or vlc media player.

Congratulations! You are now a Blender Animator.
