Wow, what an exciting month September has been!

The space shuttle Endeavour, ferried on the back of a modified 747, lifted off for the last time at 8:17 a.m. PDT on Friday, September 21, leaving Edwards Air Force Base, California for

a farewell tour over Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Cruz, Monterey, and finally landing at Los Angeles international airport. Did you see it flying overhead?

The 2012 Fly-In and Airshow was, by most accounts, a great success! Great weather made for a great turnout, both for the “general public” and more importantly for general aviation pilots. We counted 189 planes on the ground on Saturday, including performers and military. Of these 50 planes were judged. While many of the aircraft departed on Saturday, there were still a good number on display Sunday. One thing we didn’t have this year were military jet fly-bys, but personally I didn’t miss seeing taxpayer dollars being turned into noise and jet exhaust by the second. Unless, of course, there’s a space shuttle strapped to the top. :-)

President’s CornerThe Watsonville airport Open House will be Sunday, October 21st. This is a great opportunity for our EAA Chapter to support the airport and for outreach to the community. As in years past we plan to provide a hot dog lunch for open house visitors, pilots, etc. But our “official food guy” Chris Laws can’t do it alone -- so we’ll be looking for volunteers to sign up at our October chapter meeting to help out with setup, food service, and cleaning up afterward. If you’re available Sunday, please consider lending a hand.

If helping with the hot dogs isn’t up your alley, consider displaying your aircraft in front of the terminal building. Or helping the 99’s with “$0.10 per pound” flights. I’m sure Tom Hail would also love company setting up the Young Eagles booth. Also, on Saturday the 20th we’ll do another Airport Blvd cleanup, and for that we’ll need ...some volunteers! ( Seems to be a common theme, doesn’t it? )

In the meantime, don’t forget, Saturday, October 6th is our Young Eagle’s Rally from 11:00am to 3:00pm. I look forward to seeing you at our next chapter meeting, Tuesday October 2nd, starting at 7:30pm. Doors open for snacks & hangar talk at 7:00pm. Invite a friend!

A Young Eagles Rally was held on September 8, 2012.

Here are some pho-tos from that event.

Over 40 kids were flown, and all were re-turned safely.
