Flight Training Excellence

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

As the United Arab Emirates’ economy continues to grow and diversify, it is critical that we continue to develop our most important national resource – our people. At Horizon International Flight Academy, we focus on attracting and training Emirati pilots while also welcoming international students from local and regional government and non-government organisations.

We strongly believe that our success as an academy is directly related to the success of our students. That’s why the training we provide is characterised by excellence and efficiency, with safety remaining our number one priority.

To all our prospective students, I look forward to welcoming you to our facilities in the near future and to providing you the training you need to excel at your chosen profession.

MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Gearing up for the future, Horizon has all the key success factors necessary to tackle the rapid growth that has been sweeping the Middle East’s aviation industry. Undeniably, there is a need to train a cadre of highly skilled pilots to meet the needs of the region’s various airlines and their growing fleets.

The staff at Horizon, drawn from all over the world, are up to this challenge. Our experience has demonstrated that our students, after undergoing the rigorous training at Horizon, graduate to become world class pilots for major private or public organisations. And we are extremely proud of this track record.

The future of any successful flying career begins here.

WELCOME

03

Horizon was established in 2002 with the express purpose of offering flight training for military and civilian customers within the Middle East. Operations began in September 2003 after the Abu Dhabi government owned Mubadala Development Company (MDC), with the support of the UAE Offsets Group (UOG), set up the flight academy in Al Ain. The Academy has generated a great amount of interest among the local and regional military and civilian sectors.

Admitting both local and international students, the cadet pilots at Horizon have included trainees from the UAE Armed Forces, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Nigeria, Cyprus as well as Etihad Airways. Horizon has the edge over other flight training academies as it offers both helicopter and aeroplane pilot training programs that include PPL, CPL, ATPL and Flight Instructor Rating. Horizon’s syllabus is based on the JAA FCL curriculum with the issue of relevant licenses by the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) after successful completion of the course. Advanced flying training courses are also offered.

Al AinSet within the boundary of the Al Ain International Airport and using a purpose built flight training facility, Horizon has set the benchmark for pilot training in the Middle East. Birthplace of the Ruler of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Al Ain is Abu Dhabi’s second city and home to some of the UAE’s major universities.

The Academy is set amidst a sea of rolling red sand dunes, 23 KM from downtown Al Ain which, with its broad avenues, palm groves and rich heritage of ancient adobe forts and other traditional buildings, providies the perfect setting to learn how to fly.

TrainingHorizon is the first flight academy in the Middle East to train students to a European Joint Aviation Authority (JAA) standard curriculum in helicopter and aeroplane training programs.

Whether conducting standard or tailor made courses, Horizon is ideally suited to deliver quality pilot training in a truly focused aviation environment.

Combining the knowledge and expertise of our instructors, Horizon offers safe, skilled and quality flight instruction to prepare individuals for pilot licenses issued by the GCAA. Over the last eight years Horizon has logged over 70,000 incident-free flying hours.

Selection ProcessWhilst offering high standards of quality training courses, the Horizon selection process is inclusive of, but not limited to, psychometric and personality tests, trial flying lessons and interviews to help in minimising attrition rates and subsequent costs to individuals and organisations.

Course DeliveryGround training is delivered by classroom lectures and practical demonstration, conforming to the learning objectives of JAR FCL. Classroom delivery includes the use of electronic whiteboard, PowerPoint projection and models.

Training ManualsTraining manuals are used as the basis for student courseware. Where appropriate, the manuals are supplemented by additional training material in the form of handouts and CBT. To reinforce the learning objectives, Horizon provides access for CBT to all students. This can be accessed from the Academy’s state of the art computer lab during or after classes. A remote learning program will also be set up with all training material made available online in the near future.

Field TripsInformative field trips to organisations such as Air Traffic Control Centres, airlines operations and aviation maintenance organisations are part of the training, and are designed to further students’ understanding of ground subjects and flight training.

FacultyThe staff, a diverse team of multinational instructors originating from the UAE, South Africa, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, Pakistan and Jordan, are amongst the most qualified in the region. Horizon guarantees individual attention during all the phases of training by maintaining an enviable instructor-to-student ratio of nearly 1:4, or better.

Helicopter CoursesHorizon is the only civilian flight training organisation in the region offering Helicopter Pilot Training for PPL, CPL and Flight Instructor Rating Programs.

Horizon is looking to provide tailor made military programs for military customers.

Graduate RequirementsTo graduate, a student needs to achieve a minimum of 75% in each subject. GCAA examinations are administered internally. In addition, the student must pass a final flight test.

Combining the knowledge and expertise of our instructors, we offer safe, skilled and quality flight instruction to prepare you for Pilot Licenses issued by the GCAA . In its eighth year of operations, the Academy has so far graduated over 400 pilots and flight instructors from the UAE as well as Bahrain, Qatar , Saudi Arabia amongst others. Graduates from Horizon have moved on to pilot some of today’s most sophisticated aircraft.

FacilitiesWith its strategic location at the Al Ain International Airport, Horizon boasts world class pilot training facilities. Covering an area of over 3,000 square meters, the Academy’s main block houses the administration offices as well as the helicopter division. The Academy’s flight training facilities are co-located within the Horizon campus area and the dispersal consists of nine helipads, while the aeroplane division is located at the fixed wing hangar. Weather conditions in Al Ain are perfect for learning to fly with few days lost due to bad conditions. The helicopter training program has the additional benefit of presenting many opportunities for limited power scenarios, mountain flying, and desert training conditions.

SimulatorTo supplement the helicopter flight training, advanced simulators are also available. The state-of-the-art simulators have high resolution visual and audio systems, adding to the realism of the virtual flying experience.

MaintenanceThe Academy has an in-house maintenance facility for both helicopters and aeroplanes. The facility is an Approved Maintenance Organisation by the UAE GCAA. Licensed engineers and technicians maintain the fleet and ensure minimum downtime for aircraft. Horizon has also been chosen by Cessna to be an Authorized Service Centre and provides third party maintenance services.
