What is Flight Planning?
3
Flight planning in it’s simplest
form is the process of compiling
and presenting information to a
flight crew that will allow them to
safely operate an aircraft from
point A to point B.

Components of a flight plan
There are three basic components of a
flight plan;
1. The fuel block
2. The navigation log
3. The Air Traffic Control(ATC)
filing

Why do we need flight planning?
1. Efficiency
a. Operator cost
b. ATC flow control
2. Safety
a. Correct planning of fuel requirements
b. Correct selection of routing

– Can you aircraft type operate in to and out of this location?
– Are there ground supporting services available at this location? Ground handling, customs, transportation, etc.
– Does the weather forecast at this location meet the alternate limits criteria for your Ops Specs? HOU TAF 161723Z 1618/1718 05011KT P6SM SKC FM170200 02005KT P6SM SCT250

Examples of flight planning
Conclusion
23
Flight planning an aircraft can be a complex and challenging
process.
There are many variables to consider, often under continually
changing circumstances.
But at the end of the day when the aircraft has reached it’s final
destination, you have played a very important and necessary role
in the safe and successful operation of the flight!
