UNIQUE HISTORY AT EVERY TURN

Flevoland is quite distinct from the rest of the Netherlands. You are, after all, quite literally walking on what was once the seabed. The engineer, Cornelis Lely, was immortalised in folklore for the presentation of his schemes, ideas and dreams for reclaiming land from what was once known as the Zuiderzee, an immense shallow bay. These ideas and dreams led to the largest land reclamation project of all times: the Zuiderzee project. In 1924, thousands of workers descended upon the area to begin the massive, back-breaking task of turning sea into usable land. The result became known as Flevoland, the world’s largest polder. Even today, the exposed seabed yields all manner of objects, each with their own history to tell, including shipwrecks.

Flevoland is one of the largest “dry” ship graveyards in the world. 435 wrecks were found, along with almost 33,000 objects, dating from 1200 to 1900

DRY ISLANDS

With the reclamation of the land, the islands of Urk and Schokland were suddenly left high and dry; marooned islands in a dry landscape and quite unique anywhere in the world. Today, Urk is a dynamic yet traditional fishing village. Schokland is recognised worldwide as a symbol of the Dutch people’s perennial struggle against the water and was the first Dutch monument to be awarded a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

The difference between old and new makes Flevoland such a special destination

NEW NATURE

The new land offered opportunities for the creation of various new natural zones. One good example of this in Flevoland is the Oostvaardersplassen, the largest wetland nature reserve in the Netherlands. Then there is the Horsterwold, the most extensive deciduous forest in Western Europe, where you likely to come across grazing herds of Konik horses. You can also enjoy the outdoor life in the Waterloopbos hiking area. This nature area also features scale models of over thirty large water management projects from all parts of the world. With 2000 hectares of tulip fields, Flevoland is the largest tulip bulb-growing region in the Netherlands.

If you would like a full-on, breathtaking experience of colour; visit the tulip fields in spring

NEW ART AND ARCHITECTURE

Flevoland’s towns and landscape showcase some revolutionary urban developments along with fascinating landscape art. The towns of Lelystad and Almere provide striking and, at times, astonishing examples of modern architecture by the likes of the internationally lauded Dutch architect, Rem Koolhaas. The area’s architectural ambitions are more than complemented by the numerous impressive landscape artworks you will also come across. Indeed, you are unlikely to find a similar concentration of such works anywhere else in the world.

Be amazed by the architecture in Almere, number 1 on the list of modern architecture in European New Towns

ATTRACTIONS FOR BOTH THE YOUNGER VISITOR AND ADULTS

The history of Flevoland and the way in which it came into existence, built upon the passionate convictions and determination of some single-minded pioneers, can also be experienced at a number of exclusive attractions. Walibi Holland, the place to be for groups of young people, the astonishing story of the land reclamation project as narrated by the Nieuw Land Heritage Centre or a shopping expedition against the backdrop of Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet’s fascinating architecture are just some of the exciting places to discover and enjoy for both young and not so young.

Combine a shopping trip to Batavia Stad Amsterdam Fashion Outlet with a visit to nearby museums such as the Nieuw Land Museum, Bataviawerf or Flevoland’s ‘New Wilderness’ - the Oostvaardersplassen. A perfect combination for a half or full day trip

FLEVOLAND SURROUNDED BY WATER

The former Zuiderzee still surrounds the reclaimed land in the form of large lakes and beautiful waterways; absolutely superb for water sports. The waters of the Markermeer and IJsselmeer to the north can still be as rough and angry as the former Zuiderzee once was. However, the more tranquil Randmeren (bordering lakes) encircle the east of Flevoland. Lelystad offers excellent mooring facilities for river cruises.

Flevoland has a lot of water and is therefore very suitable for river cruises
