Kids First February 2014

The Professional Growth and Evaluation System (PGES) for teachers and principals has been field tested and piloted in Fleming County schools over the past two years. The certified eval-uation committee, with board approval, adopted major components from that system as the local certified evaluation plan. Recently, the Kentucky Department of Education has created the Model CEP to guide districts in revising local plans to include those same components and others. This document serves as guidance in creating a local plan that is aligned with all state regulations. Fleming County Schools’ certified evaluation committee will be working on these revisions over the next month. Staff may provide feedback through building principals and teacher representatives (Cindy Combs, SMS; Stephanie Emmons, FCHS; Michelle Hunt, HES; Linda McKee, WES; Kim Mineer, FES; Eric Zempter, EES). Fleming County Schools’ Certified Evaluation Plan to Be Revised

The Student Voice Survey is a classroom-level analysis and re-

porting system. Student Voice surveys are being used by hun-

dreds of schools and thousands of classrooms in more than 25

states nationwide. The survey generates information both

about how students experience teaching practices and learning

conditions in the classroom as well as information about how

students assess their own engagement. The survey window

will be open March 19-April 2. For more information go to:

Fleming County Panther Bowling Teams Finish Strong

The Fleming County Panther bowling teams finished the season

with an 8-1 girls’ record and an 8-1 boys’ record. The boys are

coached by Gary Shannon and his assistant, David Whitson. The

girls are coached by Jerry Dixon. Both teams participated in the

2014 Regional Singles & Team Championship which was held in

Danville, Kentucky, on February 1st and 2nd. Both teams placed 3rd

out of the 15 teams rolling in the Championship. Fifty-nine young

ladies from Region 8 were signed up to roll in order to qualify for

the Sweet 16 State Bowling Tournament. Fleming County’s Andrea

Ruark, 8th grader at Simons Middle School, advanced to the top 8,

then the top 4, and finished the day in 2nd place. Andrea repre-

sented Fleming County on February 13 during the Sweet 16 State

Bowling Tournament. This is the 4th straight year Fleming County

has had a presence at the Sweet 16 Tournament. Andrea placed

30th out of 32 during the tournament. Andrea was one of the youngest bowlers competing in

the girls singles against juniors and seniors from across the state. Congratulations, Andrea.

100th Day of School!

Several Fleming County Schools celebrated the 100th day of school on February 20. Mrs. DeHart’s second grade students at Ewing Elemen-tary dressed up for the celebration. It looks like she has several Si fans. Pictured to the right are: Kooper Perkins, Zachary Earlywine, Eli Emmons, Ariel Harber, Hailei Jones, Brynlee Ishmael, and Morgan Arnett.

Thanks to our school nutrition staff for their dedicated efforts on behalf of the students of Fleming County.

All six Fleming County Schools were awarded the HealthierUS Schools BRONZE award. Our schools are

being recognized for providing healthier menu offerings by emphasizing fresh fruits and vegetables and

whole grains, incorporating nutrition education in the classroom and emphasizing daily physical activi-

ty. Our schools join a very elite group; only 109 other Kentucky schools in four school districts (Bullitt,

Whitley, Jefferson and Oldham Counties) currently hold the HealthierUS Schools distinction.

Community Partner Award Presented to Peoples Bank

Photo courtesy of Larry Gooding During the February 12, 2014, school board meeting, Jamie Collinsworth, Fleming County Board of Education Chairman, recognized Peoples Bank for their outstanding support of the Fleming County School District. Peoples Bank has been a huge supporter of the Fleming County Ag Farm. Several Fleming County High School FFA members and instructors were on hand to show their support as well. Representing Peoples Bank were James Hay, Steve Miller, Dr. Glenn Womack and Ben Womack.

Fleming County Schools Calendar Update

On February 12, 2014, Fleming County Board of Education approved the dates to make up the

18 days of school that have been cancelled this year due to inclement weather.

School WILL be in session on the following days:

February 17, 2014 May 20, 21, 22, 23, 27, 28, 29, 30, 2014

March 19, 20, 21, 31, 2014 June 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 2014

April 1, 2, 2014 June 9, 2014 (Closing Day for Staff)

In addition, April 3 will be used to make up missed day #20, should an additional day be can-

celled.

Please plan accordingly, all staff are expected to be in school on these dates. If you have

questions, please contact your principal or Greg Emmons, Personnel Director.
