“The Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over
your journey through this vast wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you,
and you have not lacked anything.” ~ Deuteronomy 2:7
Throughout the summer we have followed the journey of some of the fathers of our faith:
David, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. As we head into August, a new month, and the start of a
new program year, our journey continues with new stories. We will hear the stories of our children
on Children’s Sabbath (August 6) and stories of our children and youth with Get RAK’d
testimonies on August 20. We will also hear the stories of the Apostle Paul, Peter, and Timothy.
Our stories are part of God’s story – of life, love, and salvation. As we walk our spiritual
journey each day, we walk with the same God who created the world. The same God who walked
with and made a covenant with the fathers of our faith. The same God who saved his people from
Pharaoh, plagues, and more. The same God who called his people into a faithful relationship with
one another, which was built on love of God and one another.
Now, 2000 years later, as the stories continue and our journey continues, we walk together in
this next day, month, and chapter of God’s story. And as long as we continue to walk with God,
then we can find hope and assurance in God’s continued faithfulness and provision for us. God
provides for God’s people, not always in the ways we think or want, but God blesses, watches over
us, is with us, and provides for us throughout the journey.
So as we continue in this journey together and this new program year, may we give thanks
always for God’s presence and blessings in our lives. May we look to where God is calling us in the
days ahead to more faithfully love him and one another. May we be in prayer for those whom God
is calling us to invite into the journey. For the summer may be almost over, but the journey of life,
love, and salvation with our Lord continues!
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Coffey

Attention Ministry Chairpersons: 2018 Budget Worksheets have been distributed to you via the Welcome Center mailboxes.
Please turn in your completed worksheets to Bonny no later
than Sunday, August 27th. Thank you for your cooperation and for
your service to Fairview.
Don’t forget we resume our regular worship schedule with services at 8:30 & 11:00 am on Sunday,
August 13th, where Associate Lay Leader Mike Lewis will bring our message.
Our Backpack Program will kick off in full swing as we provide meal bags for children
at Park Avenue Elementary School with little or nothing to eat over the weekend– every donation and
commitment helps if you have not already made one to provide for the 100 children this school year.
And the Church Picnic & Bring-a-Friend-to-Church Sunday is September 17th
with one service at 10am!
Dear Fairview Family,
Words cannot describe the
gratitude, love, and blessings that
we feel toward you, our family!
Thank you all for the cards,
meals, gifts, visits, but most of all
the prayers for me and my family
as I recover. We are very blessed
to have you all in our lives! The
Lord has blessed me with minimal
pain and an awesome recovery,
and I know this has come from
the mighty prayer warriors from
our church family and friends.
Thank you all for being the Hands
and Feet of Jesus!

As I sit down to write this article, I don’t even know where to begin. All of you know how upside
down our little family has been lately. What started out as a seemingly routine procedure on June 26th turned
into one of the biggest trials our little family has ever faced. Every step of the way, you all have been there. I
don’t know how in the world we would have made it through without your love, your support, and most of
all your prayers. Your cards, calls, visits, meals, gifts, and talents have been appreciated more that you ever
will know. In the midst of it all, you were Jesus to us. You will never know what you have each meant to us
in this time of adjusting to our new normal. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you have done for
Mike, Nate, and I. We are eternally grateful.
August is here! We will have our last Wonderful Wednesday for the summer on Wednesday, August
2nd. We have had a great summer this year and I look forward to other things coming up for fall.
On August 6th, we will celebrate Children’s Sabbath and Promotion Sunday with one service at 9:00
am. Please join us as the children show you all they know and how much they have grown in the last year as
disciples.
August 19-20 is our annual Get RAK’d program. We will be hosting that here for all rising 4th-12th
graders. If you would like for your child to participate, please see Juli or me for more info. We will be
needing lots of volunteers to make this event happen. Let us know how you would like to help or if you have
an idea for a Random Act of Kindness. Deadline for sign up is Sunday, August 6th.
Lastly, we are working on putting together more opportunities for fellowship and discipleship for our
congregation. Our Wednesday night structure was just not as successful as it had been in the past, so we are
excited to be working on trying something new! I know, new things are scary but we are hoping to be able to
roll out some fun new ideas for September. If you have an idea of a Bible study or program you would like
to see us offer or a need we are not meeting, please let me know. We work to serve your needs.
We are actively working on future events; here are a list of dates to be aware of:
August 6th - Children’s Sabbath & Promotion Sunday at 9:00 am
August 6th - Last day to sign up for Get RAK’d
August 19-20 - Get RAK’d
August 20th - Last day to sign up for the Christmas program
August 27th - Christmas program meet-and-greet & read-through at 4:30 pm
September - Beginning new fellowship and discipleship opportunities
September 17th - Bring-a-Friend-to-Church Day & Church Picnic; one service at 10:00 am

Blessed to serve with you all! Kate

Greetings Fairview!
Summer is coming to a close, and soon the kiddos will be back in the classroom
sporting their new backpacks, shoes, and of course pencil toppers! I remember that feeling
the night before the first day of school. My new clothes were sitting on the chair next to my
bed, and my new shoes were sitting on the floor eager to be worn. My book bag had my new
folders, pencils, pens, and other necessities inside waiting to be used. It was always hard to
sleep because I couldn’t wait to meet up with my friends and experience the excitement of a
new school year!
Imagine how excited Jesus must get, thinking about the day He will come back to take
us home. It must be a feeling of Alpha and Omega proportions for the savior of the world to
be counting down the days! Can you picture Him pacing back in forth on the golden streets
overlooking the crystal seas? The majesty of Heaven is all around Him. In the distance, He
hears the voices of his earthly friends expressing their love, passion, and longing for His return. I’m sure even the
Messiah is having a hard time waiting for that moment when God calls Him to saddle up on his white steed and to
reveal his glory to the whole world! Just like our anticipation and excitement as when we step onto the altar to sing
praises to our King!
On that note, I must express how wonderful it is to hear the congregation’s voices loud and clear every
Sunday! As I have said before the praise band is the church; not just the ones leading worship. Also, we are always
looking for singers and those who wish to share their worship through music. If you feel that nudge from the Holy
Spirit to share your gifts, please don’t ignore it and don’t be afraid to come and share! God gives us these blessings
with the purpose of using them to lead others to Christ! We all have something to give, so let us do so when we are
called! You may have what someone needs to hear to come and to kneel before Jesus!
Music and blessings to you all!

“Back-to-School” - August 9
That statement is received in a variety of ways:

Parents
Finally… back to a routine.
Students
Oh no! Summer fun is over. It will be great to see my friends. Yay, I’m bored.
For some students, “back-to-school” means that now they won’t go hungry - they will be fed two meals
each school day. But what happens on the weekend? Many children in our city do go hungry on weekends.
During August, teachers and administrators at Park Avenue Elementary School will evaluate the children to
determine their needs; we here at Fairview UMC will send food home every weekend. Will you be willing to make
sure that the children in our neighborhood at Park Avenue have food for the weekends?
There are a number of ways you can help to feed these children through Fairview UMC’s Backpack Buddy
Program:
For as little as $25 a month, anyone can sponsor a child, either as an individual, a Sunday School
class, or an organization from the community.
Anyone can become a member (or substitute member) of one of the four teams, which will take
2-3 hours once a month to setup, pack, and deliver a bag of food for each child to Park Avenue.
Every person in this church can be praying for this program to meet the needs of the children at
Park Avenue, remembering that we do this for God’s glory and for the good of the children!
If you would like to join a team, please call the following Team Leaders:
Bill & Michele Franklin (evening team): (434) 857-5476
Mike Lewis (evening team): (434) 251-4739

How to Structure Your Church
for Evangelism
Featuring: Jacob Armstrong
Live stream at First UMC
in Martinsville, Virginia
Jacob Armstrong is the founding
pastor of Providence Church, an 8-
year old UMC plant in Mt. Juliet,
Tennessee. Providence’s vision is to
see those who are disconnected
from God and the church to find
hope, healing, and wholeness in
Jesus Christ. Jacob’s passion in
ministry is what he likes to call
“Worship Without Walls,” which is
taking God’s love beyond the walls
of a building to places of need in
the community and world.
How to Structure Your Church for
Evangelism will explore key
principles for evangelism in the
local church including: crafting a
vision that fits your mission field,
rethinking worship, and leadership
development and structure.
