E2E Orchestration for advanced IoT services

IoT devices can operate as part of critical, sometimes even lifesaving services such as healthcare or smart traffic control. These kind of services may be provided by either stationary devices or mobile devices and leverage information from diverse sources including IoT devices, Telco Network , environment etc. An efficient ecosystem that can support these services should include tools for near-real-time tracking of the required spots of attention, dynamically ensure that the required network resources are allocated and monitor their lifecycle and their quality of service. From a technical perspective, this Catalyst will explore an architecture of comprehensive End-to-End orchestration for NFV/SDN along with the eco-systems that can support the dynamicity of resource allocation and assurance for advanced services encompassing information sources beyond traditional telecom network boundaries.

Champions: Telecom Italia, TeliaSoneraParticipants: TEOCO, Netcracker, Wipro, CanG0

High efficient operation of virtualized Telco services The goal of this Catalyst is to improve the operation efficiencies of virtualized Telco services (e.g.IN, AS,Messaging,Data etc).

NFV brings challenges to CSP’s operation, for example:

• How to offer life-cycle management of multi-VNFs from different vendor

• How to locate fault across different NFV layers • How to improve adaption of I-layer • Our Catalyst does research on how to offer

a high efficiency Telco service environment under NFV.

Deliveries: Live use cases to show how our Digital Foundry to:

• Manage multi-vendor services(i.e. migration traditional applications to NFV architecture and life cycle management of virtualized application)

• Fault locating across different layers • Unified adaption to different types of resource

for VNFs

CatalystSDN/NFV CATALYSTS

Maximizing Profitability with NFV Orchestration This Catalyst project envisions an operating environment in which service providers optimize their operations against a wide range of financial and technical objectives such as operating costs, performance and SLAs. Policies are structured to account for these diverse set of objectives when driving optimization decisions. These decisions are geared toward attaining a level of business agility not possible before, enabled by the inherent flexibility of NFV orchestration. The goal is to instantiate, monitor and dynamically adjust virtualized network functions to maximize both their technical performance, such as SLAs, QoS and resource utilization, and their financial performance. This is basically the equivalent of applying least-cost homing to the placement of virtualized network functions.

Champion: NTTParticipants: Ericsson, Aria, Viavi, SAS

A Fresh Approach to the Business of Business Data Services

NFV/SDN can provide an omni-channel and catalog-driven approach to Business Data Services, opening new market offerings while at the same time restructure a business that historically has been best described as a

series of one-offs, manual, costly, swivel chair products; into a reactive, healthy, market leading business. The Catalyst is aiming to:

• Demonstrate a fresh business model for Business Data Services using NFV/SDN

• Compare / contrast the CAPEX and OPEX of a traditional Business Data Services business with the data center approach that NFV/SDN affords Business Data Center offerings

• Show working Business Data Services that mirror today’s offerings in capabilities, resiliency, and flexibility using NFV/SDN

Champion: Liberty GlobalParticipants: Sigma, Digital Route, Dorado Software

NFV Ecosystem Enabler: A well-enabled VNF package The primary focus of this Catalyst project, on its first phase, is to integrate/harmonize/enhance existing standards to derive industry agreement on how virtualized network services should be packaged especially from operational and procurement aspects. The project will transform and augment NS, VNF descriptors into procurable packages, including non-functional elements to support procurement decision making, automation, and e2e operation.

Champions: AT&T, Orange, China MobileParticipants: Huawei, IBM, Cloudsoft, Gigaspaces

API Stimulator New generation Digital Service Providers need to be able to plug in new platforms or partners and immediately create products to compete. Services that include newer cloud, NFV and IoT components are a part of this mix. In this model, traditional access is being presented as “Network as a Service” where the service provides real time control and allows the Digital Service Provider to manage all customer interactions. Given the extensive application of Frameworx concepts in the simulator we expect that we will be able to show the applicability of both Frameworx in addition to the suitability of TMF APIs to these new types of services.

Champions: AT&T, VodafoneParticipants: DGIT, Wipro

Vendor agnostic Service Assurance across Mobile and WiFi networks

The outcome of this Catalyst project is to detect service quality degradation in real time and provide near real time feedback to enable faster corrective action to improve the delivery of services over virtual/hybrid multi-vendor mobile and Wi-Fi networks , complying with the TM Forum ZOOM initiative for network automation. By proving establishment of the methodology, mobile operators will be able to provide quality assured service delivery of critical services and may create new business revenues from differentiated service through better user experience.

OpenMano resource and service orchestration

The Catalyst project will demonstrate the deployment of the network infrastructure for a L3 VPN service and a per-customer IMS core in a virtualized environment using OpenMano (Open source NFV Orchestrator).

Champion: TelefonicaParticipant: Indra

Future State: Virtualizing Carrier Operations

This Future State Catalyst will demonstrate a single virtually centralized environment, which presents a secure, contextualized and permission controlled 360-degree view for each user-role engaged in the platform, which is used to create active contracts. Importantly, it will show that Carrier virtualization demands more than a technical transformation. Beyond programmable network functions and infrastructure, realizing the service velocity and business agility benefits of virtualization requires a new operating model. Rigid hierarchical organizational structures aren’t well suited to manage demands and opportunities of a dynamic and horizontal operation.
