Herman and Minnie Miller.

Herman Miller Family

Herman Wil liam Mil ler . son of Louis and Caroline Miller. was born Feb. 6 . 1875 in Harlan County. When he was but a few months old . his parents moved to Crawford County, Nebr. and settled on a farm 5 i/2 m iles north of Manilla in East Boyer Township.

On March 5, 1901 he wa s united in marriage wi th Minnie Steckelberg of Man illa . Minnie . the daughter o f Charl es and Margaret Steckelberg was born May 13. 1883 near Manilla . The couple met at the Evangelistic Camp meetings that were held in the Flint Grove (later known as the Ross Penniston farm) one m ile north of Manilla. They began farming south of Manilla . Nine years later they purchased a farm 1il2 miles west of Manilla . They moved a house from Astor which was their home until they built a new home in 1925. Their four children are: Selma (Mrs. Louis Vennink) , Lucille (Mrs. Melroy Carstens), Alvin of Manilla , Arno (de· ceased June 23. 1983).

Herman died June 15, 1930. His wife ,Minnie . continued to manage the farm business until her sons graduated from school and could operate the farm. in 1942, she moved to Manilla and continued to be active in church and com· munity projects. She was an active 4-H Leader for many years. When the Manilla Manor was opened for residents in April 1976. she moved to th e Manor, where she continues to make her home . She celebrated her 100th birthday there on May 13, 1983.

Hugh E. Miller Family

Hugh E. Miller was born July 14. 1892, to Charles and Minnie Olive Thompson Miller.

Hugh moved to Minnesota in 1920, where he was a farmer and lumberman.

On March 19. 1934, Hugh married Hazel Chambers. They lived near International Fall s, Minn.

This union was blessed with six children : Betty Steinbeck, Rosalea Kaski, Carolyn Lasen . Margaret Johnson, Evelyn Castle and Hugh E. M iller Jr. .

His brothers and sister were Neliie, Frank, Bill, J ack, Eli , Guy, and Clarence Miller.

Hugh passed away Nov. 28, 1984.

John C. Miller Family

John Christopher Miller was born in 1822. in Hamburg , Germany. In 1850, he married Anna Emiline Harger, in Hamburg . On Apri129. 1852. they came to America by boat. docking in New York. He was a shoe-maker by trade .

In 1855, the fami ly traveled to Iowa . by wagon train. They lived in Davenport, Tipton, Meehan· icsville , and finally Manilla .

John and Emiline had six children: Charles. Bet ty (Mrs. Elijah Stodt!ard) , Elizabeth (Lizzie. Mrs. John Sutton ). John, Frank. and an infant that died at an early age . 270

Louis T. Miller Family

Louis Theodore Miller was born Feb. 13, 1844 in Seckeritz. Pommerania, Germany. The first 24 years of his life was spent in Germany. In 1864, at the age of 20. ht;:_,_was drawn into the German army and served three years, taking part in the war against Austria in 1866. He was discharged from service in 1867.

In 1868, at the age of 24. he emigrated to the United States. locating at Garnerville, Clayton . Ia. On July 18 of the same year, he was married to Carbline Kohn at Garnerville . They made their home at Garnerville for the next four years. In 1872. they moved to Orleans, Nebr. which was their home for 2il2 years . until Oct 1875 when they moved to Iowa again, locating on a farm in East Boyer Township, Crawford County. They continued to make thei r home there for the next 28 years. In March 1903 Mr. Miller retired from the farm and the family moved to Manilla. ·

Mr. and Mrs. Miller were the parents of ten children. One son , Will iam. died in infancy. The other children are : Ida (Mrs. Henry Loch · miller); Amelia , (Mrs. Charles Saltwell) ; Herman; J ohn; Bertha (Mrs. Herman Loch ­miller) ; Alvena (Mrs. Louis Bohlander) : Anna (Mrs. Frank Bohlander) ; Miss Augusta , and Elsie (Mrs. August Schuldt).

Mrs . Caroline Kohn Miller was born March ·16. 1848 at Geiswald , Pommerania. Germany and died at her home in Manilla on Jan. 1, 1909.

Louis Miller died at his home in Manilla on April 3 . 1929.

William A. Miller Family

William (Bill) Arthur Miller was married to Agnes Shaw in Pearshall, N.D. They had one daughter. Edith Olive Gruhn. Edith and her husband had three sons: Wayne, Stanley. and William.

Francis Mitzel Family

Edna Grau, daughter of Hugo and Anna Grau. was married to Franci s Mitzel of Mi lbank , S.D. on Nov. 27. 1940.

Francis worked on the ·rai lroad for 17 years . and then at the Denison Hospital until his retirement He passed away in Sept of 1977.

They were the parents of two children. Janet and Karen. Janet is married to Jim Goeser and

Cicero Morgan family

One of Manilla 's civic -minded people was Cicero Morgan. He was a son of Addison and Phillis (Theobald) Morgan. who had seven chi!· dren. Cicero was born Oct. 13, 1879 and died Aug . 7, 1950. He married Lola Milligan on May 18, 1904. Cicero began his early married years as an express agent in Manilla from 1904 until 1930 when he was transferred to CarrolL Twelve years later he retired because of failing health and returned to Manilla.

Besides being a member of the Methodist Church he was active in the Golden Leaf Lodge No. 59S, a 32nd degree Mason. 1st wort~y patron of the Order of Eastern Star, Man~ a Chapter No. 408. Daryl Muhlbauer is the son of Louis and Phyl lis (Kerkoff) Muhlbauer of Manilla. He is married to Suzanne Fox 1'\uhlbauer. daughter ol Harry and Nancy Fox of Beatrice. Nebr.

Jeff Muhlbauer. son of Louis and Phyllis Muhlbauer, was born Nov. 20. 1960. He gradu· ated from Manilla Community School in 1979. He attended the Universrty of South Dakota and received his Bachelors degree in Accounting in 1983.

Dan Muhlbauer was born and raised on an Iowa funn_ He graduated from Manilla High School in 1976. He furthered his education at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, IA. receiving his agricultural business degree. He is the son of the late Louis Muhlbauer who

~ served as Crawford County Supervisor and State Representative. Louis served the Iowa House of Representatives from 1983-1993. Dan's mother, Phyllis, resides in Manilla and is excited to see the family legacy continue. He and his wife Patti were married in 1979.

Shortly following their marriage, they purchased their home place and have been farming ever since. They have 3 grown children. Their oldest daughter, Beth, is married to David Swearingen and they have a son, Brody. Beth works for the city of Manning and David is an auto technician at Swearingen Auto in Manning also. Their son, David and his wife Linda, have 2 children, Chas and Ava. David is involved in the farming operation with them. Linda is the office manager at Manning Regional Health Center. Their youngest daughter, Megan, is married to Robert Riesselman. Megan is a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant for AEA 11 out of Carroll. Robert is also in the farming operation with them. Dan and Patti feel vexy blessed to have their children and grandchildren dose to them! Dan and Patti are members of the United Methodist Church in Manning. IA They serve as church council chairs. Dan is involved with Men's Group and Lay Ministry. The Muhlbauer farming operation consists of row crop, cattle feeding and isowean hogs. Dan enjoys riding horses, and relaxing with his family and friends. In November of'04, Dan was elected as a Crawford County Supervisor. He has served in this position for 5 years. He setved as chairman in 2006 and is currentJ.y the vice-chair. Some of his accomplishments as county supervisor are maintaining a $4 million balance in the reserve fund, building a new 28 bed county jail facility, instaHing a new heating and electrical system in the Crawford County Courthouse, and his efforts to change the gravel road maintenance practices. Dan has served on several boards such as the Crawford Co. Development Corporation, Youth Emergency Services in Cherokee, and West Central Community Action in Harlan. He serves as secretary for West Central Community Action and is chairman of the emergency foods and shelter program for the West Central organization. Along with this, he has served on the M&M Divide board. Dan is running for the State Representative in District 51 so he can be a strong voice for western lowa. Dan's 32 years of farming. along with his 2 terms as county supervisor, give him the background and experience necessary to best represent the district
