DO THE RIGHT THING ENOUGH TIMES, AND PEOPLE BEGIN TO NOTICE.He moves comfortably in a crowd. It’s the sign of a lifelong diplomat. And on a summer’s day he makes his way through the audience like the “Mayor of Pageantry”, with a handshake here, a kind word there, a salute of recognition across the field. He’s on his way to hand out trophies, but he’s ready to share some time on the front sideline, where he seems most at ease.
“I’ve been in this activity for so many years it seems like all my life.” He confides,
“And what a life it has been! Early on, I wanted to audition for Drum Major in High
School. But back then, in 1947, you were expected to twirl baton! So at the age
of 15, I started taking lessons with Bob Dawson, the University of Dayton’s drum
major. In a little over a year, it all seemed to come naturally, and I loved the chal-
lenge. Whenever I’d go to a competition to see or learn a new trick, I realized that I
could perform it almost immediately. When young twirlers started to call for help,
I began to teach twirling even though I was still in high school. I’ll never forget my
very first student, Mary Jo Holl, who would go on to win Grand Nationals in 1963.”
— The Miller Way continued on the next page
trained musician and teacher, Fred began to develop total
band shows, including brass, woodwinds, percussion, drill,
colorguard, and twirlers, as the best way to reach even more
students. He directed the bands for the Fairborn City Schools from
1957 to 1968, eventually serving as Music Supervisor. But he also used
his theatrical skills to bring a little bit of Broadway to his student casts
by directing ten of the most popular Musicals of that time.
The United States Twirling Association, Inc was founded in 1957 by
Fred and a group of twirling teachers in the Midwest where he served
as the first President, filling many different roles over time.
“In May of 1959, the best thing in my life happened. I married my wonderful wife and best friend, Marlene Sedgeley from Auburn, Maine.” His yellowed wallet photo shows what looks like a cheerleader and a football player, but in reality they were both twirlers on a mission, establishing Camps and Clinics. In fact, “…no other twirling teacher or strutting teacher has ever produced as many Grand National Twirling and Strutting Champions as myself and Marlene”, he says with a hint of pride.
In the early years, the Blackhawks were made up of baton twirlers, flags, rifles, drums
and brass instruments. Miller’s Blackhawks Twirling Corps established a record
that is unequalled in the twirling world by winning the National Championship every
year from 1956 through 1968. The Junior Corps went on to win 18 titles in 21 years.
The Blackhawks would later become one of the first World Class Colorguards in
Winter Guard International, competing for some ten years in the upper echelons.
The Blackhawks decades flew by, Fred admits, mentioning a tragic fire,
Macy’s Parade appearances, trips to Spain, and most importantly, the births of
his three children. In 2008, when USTA celebrated its 50th Anniversary, 25 of his
beloved Blackhawks alumnae gathered to perform “one more time” in Daytona Beach,
to the kind of standing ovation that followed the group through its history.

The four distinct looks of the Cesario Collection
Traditional features all the time-honored elements that recall an era of classic confidence, done
here with a modern eye for detail and fit. Contemporary generates the sleek clarity and trademark
visual power that defines “State-of-the-Art” now. BreakOut showcases a bold step into
the future of performance wear with a focus on innovative concept, materials, and edge.
University displays the opportunity to unite the elements of team colors, sports logos, and school
identity in a mix that today’s members and alumni can enjoy equally.
Michael J. Cesario meets us at his favorite corner café in
New York City, where old neighborhood photos cover the
walls and the coffee is strong. He’s quick with a welcome,
but the voice we know from the Drum Corps DVD’s seems
oddly subdued talking one-on-one. While shaking hands,
he flips over the paper placemat, but he’s busted…his rough
sketches cover it.
“I’ve always drawn,” he says, putting away the pen, “even as a
kid it was my favorite creative outlet. Hand me a box of cray-
ons and I was a happy pup.” By the time the budding young
artist hits the age of nine he’s marched his first parade.
“It’s 1957, and I’m the worst clarinet
player in the entire Memorial Day
Parade, but I’m totally hooked on
huge, bigger-than-life pageantry.”
“The Cavaliers would come to my hometown for
the first drum corps show of the year.” The Cavaliers
visited NYC for the holiday? “Oh, no,” he laughed, “like
all the best New Yorkers, I’m not from here!
I was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and we used to
call that early contest “Frostbite Falls”!”
So the veteran New Yorker is really a “Cheesehead”, and his
twin inspirations, Art and Music, push him to design band
uniforms…it’s that simple? “No, not at all!
There were many years of creative pain and angst,
suffering for my art…in other words, I went into
Theatre. I worked to get a couple of degrees in
Directing and Production Design and enjoyed a
great career doing TV and stage productions…
some magnificent teachers, some crazy producers…
the tales are endless. It’s where I learned about
character analysis, how to reveal inner qualities and
individuality through clothing. I also learned how
to enhance the figure, concealing some physical
traits while augmenting others. But I never lost
my passion for Marching Bands, Drum Corps, and
Colorguards, so I performed and taught throughout
my Grad and Undergrad years…flying from band
camp to summer stock was pretty mind-boggling!”
I’m always pushing our patternmaker to reinvent
his genius. His skills in fabric architecture are
what make our lightweight, flexible garments so
handsomely tailored.
After communicating with a client, I turn to my trusted sketch
pad to work out the visual puzzle, which later becomes the
finished full color illustration. We’ve always offered custom
design at no extra cost.
In fact, the word “passionate” seems to take on new meaning
when Cesario tells the tale.
“From sketchbook to final detail,
I’m a perfectionist and can drive
folks crazy, I know, but my passion
was that I could take all those
“tricks-of-the-trade” that I used as
a professional Costume Designer
and bring them to performance
wear for young musicians.”
“I wanted them truly comfortable, and able to do all the
athletic activities contemporary bands require. So we needed
a full range of movement, a flexible garment that’s more
fitted, more tailored, and more durable than anything else
out there.” “My passion,” there’s that word again, “meant
starting fresh at square one, with no pre-conceived notions of
what a uniform is supposed to be.”
Eventually, Cesario had become Head of Design/
Technology at Purchase College, (today, he’s Professor
Emeritus). Armed with the latest tools and a brilliant
patternmaker, and using The Cavaliers and the Phantom
Regiment as guinea pigs, a team began to gather the
construction knowledge essential to creating something
new, something truly special. The expertise and crafts-
manship of FJM became the crucial factor in changing an
entire industry. The results are on display in these pages.
Inspiration? Passion? Yes, but there’s one other
quality, Cesario insists. “Call it stamina, resilience, or en-
durance,” he insists “but we keep moving and growing…
after all, a perfectionist is never really satisfied.” With that,
he settles the tab and heads for the door, grabbing that
placemat full of future designs. — Scott A. Winters

starts with
the fine points.
Each individual
element in a Cesario
uniform is tested for
strength, washability,
and longevity.
Tough. Period. Our washable FJM uniforms handle hard knocks
with the rugged dependable style we invented. Our fabrics are
engineered by America’s finest mills; our patterns are draped in
3-D, then computer graded; and our craftsmen “sweat the
details” for maximum structural integrity. Handsome? Of course!
But every uniform you see here is really comfortable, flexible, and
durable, raising the bar for uniform performance. Again.
From concept
to illustration;
from prototype
to final
construction.
At FJM, we’re with you every
step of the way. A Cesario
uniform is true value for your
investment with custom
patterns, exclusive features,
and built-in quality no one
else can match.

Fred J. Miller, Inc. turned to America’s most prominent
fabric mill, Milliken and Company, and its most
famous product, Visa fabrics, to secure the latest in
fabric technology for its trademark Cesario Collection.
Outcomes from the latest rounds of testing provided
FJM with the superior fabric it demanded, and proved
that the Visa System 3 outperforms the claims of every
other fabric being used in uniforms today. Ounce for
ounce, this rugged, durable, and comfortable fabric
outscores any competitor for moisture management
and stain release. And yet, it is woven in a classic 11.5
ounce gabardine, perfectly suited for the tailored fit and
crisp good looks demanded by the top Bands and Drum
& Bugle Corps who rely on the Image Makers at FJM.
As highly-rated innovators of American performance
fabric, venerable Milliken Mills of Spartanburg, SC.
engineered the patented VISA System 3 to provide
superior, permanent comfort, soil release and moisture
management unrivaled in the industry.
Here are the reasons FJM chose to go with the leader.
Comfort - The VISA System 3 fabrics’ smooth feel
is the result of patented technology, engineered for
high performance characteristics. In addition, the
softness is permanent and consistent, even after
multiple washings. In recent testing, 4 out of 5 uniform
industry experts preferred VISA System 3 to nano
-treated garments when it came to softness. And wash
after wash VISA System 3 garments by FJM retain
their resilience and colorfastness, while maintaining
it’s breathability in all climate conditions.
Stain Release - The VISA System 3 is able to handle
tough oil stains that are normally very difficult to get out.
This is due to a patented process directly applied to the
fabric, which also prevents spreading and redisposition.
Tests showed that remarkable VISA System 3 is up to 4 times
better than nano-treated fabrics in regards to stain release.
Moisture Management – The Visa System 3 comes
with a superior drying rate. In moisture transport, VISA
System 3 has shown to be 7 times faster than nano-treated
fabric, while drying at a rate 33% faster.
Wicking Capabilities – The Visa System 3 fabric
transports moisture and sweat away from the performers
skin. Keeping them dry and comfortable.
The custom, washable uniforms of the Cesario Collection
have gained recognition for athletic comfort, distinctive
good looks and enduring performance. And FJM’s ongoing
relationship with Milliken Mills guarantees the most
sophisticated Visa fabrics available.

An Icon RenewedHow do you update the masculine, signature
uniform of the “Drum Corps of the Decade”,
The Cavaliers? Very carefully. It helps to
have the creator of the original look work his
magic once again. So when the Corps asked
Michael J. Cesario to refresh the most recent
version of the design he originally penned in
1983, he put everything on the line.
The Result? Take a look. Every line, every arc, every shape
is completely new. It’s slimmer, broader, taller,
and more tailored. And yet, it generates the
same high power energy, handsome good
looks, and “Cavalier Green” that distinguished
the original. Once again, FJM has crafted a
contemporary classic for today’s performers
with the latest fabrics and technology.
Very fresh.

Character, Integrity, and Hot Sauce. You’ve got to capture the very soul of your group and bring it to life!
From concert stage to parade route, from half-time show to the competitive field, “Uniforms Make the Brand”.
The stature and clarity of your uniform design is a declaration of your
group’s character and excellence, creating a look, an image, a brand
unique to you. While most bands tend to reflect the colors and traditions
of the school or organization they represent, a great designer can find
new ways to be innovative in spirit while reverential in tone. We need
to be aware of what the band has worn previously, and what mascot or
title the band may carry. But, teamed with the Designer, you can still project
an image that contains the elements of modern national-caliber
standards, conveys your individual style, and allows the members to look and
feel strong, confident and contemporary. To bring the true character of the
band to life within the uniform, it is essential to imagine a complete design
process, as intricate as musical composition. Instead of examining each
note by itself, we must “read the score” by looking at the big picture first.
The ideal mission of a uniform is to, in fact, make everyone look uniform.
Visibility. The uniform should look handsome, of course, but it must also
relate to the others around it in a manner that melds the individuals into a
striking whole. We’ve got to work together to ensure that we can see
clarity and direction as a unit, making a complete whole. Remember, if
you can’t see it from 50 feet, you can’t see it! Leave the detailed view-
ing for how well it’s constructed…then go ahead and get a microscope!
Identity. The heart of your group needs to be evident from the first
viewing by an audience, and the first wearing by the performer. The
ability to communicate your distinctive personality and spirit needs to
find its way into your uniform. The traditions of your band should be
honored, of course, but elevated and enriched. Be sure to edit the
accumulation of old details that distract the eye and hurt your visual
impact. We’ve got to know who we’re watching, and see your
signature, but with a bit of visual hot sauce thrown in for zest!
Practicality. Today’s bands perform to rigorous standards that require
durable, athletically-engineered performance wear to match the demands
of modern programs. Accurate patterns, versatile fabrics, and new con-
struction methods are the hallmarks of FJM/Cesario uniforms. Comfortable
and flexible, they are specifically designed and intended to launder without
fading or discoloration, avoiding the expense and environmental problems
of chemical dry cleaning.
If it doesn’t say Cesario, it’s not a Cesario. Only the original has the signature on every FJM label.
Our inspiration, experience, and game-changing vision reveal a unique
dedication to our friends and clients, their bands and their brands.
— Michael J. Cesario

Legend says Napoleon padded his army’s shoulders with batting to
make them more intimidating, and then sewed buttons on the cuffs to
prevent them from blowing their noses there.
Even military bands, invented for morale on the battlefield, wore
outfits with features similar to the military uniforms of their time:
box-shaped, heavy wool, weighty interfacings, horsehair canvas,
and flimsy linings which twisted and torqued. Pinched collars
contained sharp edges and large metal hooks. Buttons either
were sewn-on or pierced the fabric with rusting rings and
washers. Suspendered trousers had lumpy zippers at the waist.
Heavily-ornamented Civil War and Circus Band Uniforms were
hot, heavy, badly ventilated, and uncomfortable, fitting the clothes hanger and musician alike,
with an emphasis on maintaining a rigid and unforgiving shape. Amazingly, after WWII, these
old-fashioned suits remained largely stagnant; inflexible patterns copied with no consideration for
wearer comfort or easy care, even as the style and number of America’s Bands and Drum and
Bugle Corps expanded.
Unfortunately, most attempts at a new type of suit ended as stripped-down versions
or ill-fitting blouses with elastic waists. Shapeless “unstructured wash-and-wear”
became dead-on-arrival fad; an unwanted stepchild of an industry disinclined
toward change or experimentation.
But here’s the next chapter. The revolutionary “Cesario™” uniform, exclusively from
FJM, became the industry innovator by defying all categorization. Striking good looks and
expert craftsmanship combined to make a durable uniform that moves as modern bands do.
And you can put that in your washer and dryer.
Starting in 1983, a completely new uniform began to take shape. Revolutionary in materials, design, and
construction, it took nothing for granted, and literally started from a “blank page”. Tested by The Cavaliers
Drum and Bugle Corps and the Phantom Regiment those first years, the new uniforms took incredible
punishment. With sweltering sixty-day bus-and-truck tours across the US, they were “ridden hard and
put away wet”, literally. Word leaked out that a Broadway Costume Designer from “inside” the pageantry
had actually invented a whole new way to build uniforms that would be strong, washable, and still look
great on TV. Finally, FJM, Inc., announced this innovation publicly, and put it into national production,
becoming “The Company That Changed Everythingsm”
Today, the standard-setting “Cesario™ “ uniform is worn by more Bands of America and Drum Corps
International semi-finalists and finalists than all the other companies combined. It has become the
preference of forward-looking University Bands as well, making FJM the fastest growing band uniform
manufacturer in America. The trademark fit and finish is built directly into the tailored uniform itself,
utilizing a proprietary combination of textile architecture and patternmaking, combined with the latest
Visa System 3 fabrics.
“Cesario™” designs are uniquely distinctive, able to convey the traditions and aspirations of
each group, resisting any labels, and actually creating a visual brand for the contemporary band.

he Blue Devils had their second consecutive undefeated season in 2010, and set a new Drum Corps International record with 14 World Championship Titles.
Vibrant and entertaining, Blue Devils’ programs capture the imagination of
fans and judges alike. They radiate confidence, calm, and assurance.
Each show is unpredictable and inventive, spotlighting musical and visual
design concepts that lead the activity.
Since his first asymmetrical “Blue Devil Blue” uniform in the ‘90’s,
Michael J. Cesario has worked hand-in-hand with famed designer
Scott Chandler and FJM to redefine the Blue Devil look. Reflecting a
sense of stature and adventure, while echoing the latest styles, fabrics,
and technology, this trademark uniform is always ahead of the curve.
What’s the next step? Stay tuned.
With 14 World Class
Championship titles to their
credit, Blue Devils have always
relied on Michael J. Cesario to
transform their look, creating
trends that challenge the status
quo, while delivering real
Blue Devils style.

Maybe it’s the luster of their sound, full of depth and richness. Maybe it’s the beauty of their
movement, like molten bronze. Maybe it’s the sweep and scope of their imagination, tender one
moment, heroic the next. Whatever makes greatness, Carolina Crown seems to embrace it all.
Who else could have captured the growth of this unique ensemble and its desire to warm the
audience? Who had the design maturity, experience and vision to predict a uniform that changes
with each current production? Only Michael J. Cesario.
Together with FJM, he has crafted a uniform like no other, for a corps like no other.

At first glance you may still have to ask yourself...
“Is that Mike or Mark?” These twin sons of Fred and
Marlene Miller are both Executive Vice Presidents of
FJM. And they both agree on offering their clients
only the finest product possible… one of the few
things they may ever agree on.
by Scott A. Winters
he fact that the brothers’ expectations are high is nothing new
to me. I was just 18 when I auditioned for Miller’s Blackhawks.
Even then, M&M (not the candy, or that rapper guy, but the
twins) wanted perfection, and we tried to give it to them.
No matter what the motivation, no matter what the challenge,
they worked as hard as we did. Harder. Side by side, leading
by example, M&M helped me become a better performer than I ever
imagined. We won plenty of prizes in those years, but it was their dedication,
work ethic, and great sense of humor that made the biggest impression.
When I recently came back to FJM, for work, it was no surprise to me that
M&M were now giving their all to guarantee unsurpassed service for every
FJM customer. Whether it’s the latest merchandise, the finest Cesario Uniform,
the coolest Chandler stretchwear, or the best shoe at the best price, they
personally stand behind every product we offer. When M&M say that
something’s the greatest, it really is!
M&M believe that great customer service should be a given. “Helping a
client make decisions is part of our job”, says Mike, “and it’s not always about
agreeing with them.” “We don’t just sell,” Mark jumps in, “We try to use our
experience to guide them to the decision that best fits their needs and vision.
We offer solutions that make a real-world difference.”
Mike looks at me and says “Hey, I was going to say that.”
We all laugh, and I think to myself “I’m home.”

t’s not easy to characterize Marlene Miller, but
“petite dynamo” seems to fit perfectly, at least
that’s what her design cohort, Michael J. Cesario
insists. Without a doubt, any argument between
them is bound to have sparks of energy flying.
So I asked them what makes the FJM/Cesario
uniform so successful and competitive.
MM – “It’s not an argument, it’s a discussion…”
MJC – “Next she’s going to say it’s her wonderful service. You know, at BOA Regionals, this lady is there all day with her binoculars, taking notes about uniform fit for each of “her” bands?”
MM – “That’s true, but that’s not what I was going to say. Yes, when it comes to FJM customer satisfaction, we’re in it for the long haul. But our biggest advantage is our durable construction. You know that.”
MJC – “Nice try, Marlene, but it’s our design leadership. Sure, they’re rugged and dependable, but they handle hard knocks with handsome proportions, advanced style, vivid colors, and classic good looks. Discussion over.”
ell, that went well. When they agree,
as they do on cost, comfort, perfor-
mance, and yes, service, their tone can become
almost warm.
MM – “We really enjoy a terrific team at FJM, so really one area flows into the other and the folks know each other. It makes for great customer support.”
MJC – “ Well you’re the leader and motivator-in-chief…It’s a great family business…your office in the new building is only steps from any major focus area, whether it’s your new computerized cutter, the sew-ing room, or inspection. Eagle eyes, right?”
MM – “I’ll take that as a compliment. After introducing the bib-pant, the gusseted arm, the adjusta-cuff and adjusta-hem, the comfort collar, and the whole modern tailored washable uniform, we keep innovating to stay ahead and to anticipate the needs of our clients. I think we understand contemporary Bands and Drum Corps from the inside out.”
ee? No debate, was there? In fact, their
differences can sound similar. No, really.
Here’s what they say make their uniforms
like no others.
MM – “Our unique structure starts with expert pattern-making, which is why our uniforms fit like no other. By using unique, lightweight methods for top construction, and avoiding all the elements that make old-fashioned uniforms restrictive, we’ve come up with a terrific game-changing product that’s gained a huge and loyal following.”
MJC – “It’s capturing the unusual and identifying characteristics of every group that sets our designs apart. Not all uniforms begin life as a computer files. After all, if it’s in a laptop, it’s already been done. A great design is not just an assemblage of parts; it’s a vision that combines evocative images within the specific need of our clients. We want impact! We want energy! And we deliver every time. Our best advice? Free.
MM - “Now you’re talking! Clients first, then Construction and Design.”
MJC - “Right, Clients first, then Design and Construction.”
hey both laughed and the debate was left in the
air once again. So whether your FJM uniform
captures an iconic classic, or creates a contemporary
standard, you know that our design inspiration and
construction experience come from years of vision,
hands-on involvement in pageantry, and a unique
dedication to friends and clients. — Scott A. Winters

She’s multi-tasking again; mother of three, Human Resource Director, Summer Clinic guru, and Dance Team Coach. But today, as employees begin to arrive at FJM Headquarters, Mary Lynn Dorow lets out with a laugh as we look to the parking lot.
It’s “Hat Day” at FJM and these folks have taken
the challenge seriously. “The supervisors may have a
bit of a problem talking to these cartoon characters,
flappers, and lobsters,” she says, “but it’s one of our
keys to successful team building!” Just then, a woman
with mouse ears pulls into the parking lot. “As Human
Resources Director, my goal is to make sure everyone
from the production staff to the front office staff has a
positive attitude. The key to having our clients return
year after the year is to have that great mind-set
present everywhere in our FJM operations.”
This same attitude carries over into her highly trained summer clinic staff. FJM
Clinics have been in existence over 52 years. “Our active philosophy, T.E.A.M.
(Together Everyone Achieves More) is widespread throughout the summer, and
in our total business model.” The clinic program provides exceptional instruction
for every aspect of all auxiliary programs. She adds, “We specialize in flag, rifle,
majorettes and twirlers, dancers, drum majors and student leadership training,
and we also offer private clinics in other locations at our client’s request.”
The place begins to take on Mardi Gras air, sequin top hats, bowlers, and
grandma bonnets filling the vast space. “I’ll get a chance to see them all in
our lunchroom later, but first…” and in mid-sentence she takes a call from her
Dance Team Captain at Alter High School, a recent project. At 68 performers,
it’s a tribute to FJM camps, because four years ago it didn’t exist. Now, it’s one-
tenth of the school. Mary Lynn picks up right where she left off “…I’m off to
school. You know, we became so popular we even have a flash mob!”
We shoot out to her car (a convertible, what else?) and she offers some last
words. “Remember, I’m a Miller, so I’ve got Marlene’s energy and Fred’s pa-
tience. Our success is due to great products and extra service, true, but mostly
it’s because we’re all involved and passionate about what we do. We always
tell folks they can call for help anytime on a million different topics…and always
reach a Miller.” And she’s off, still wearing her Santa hat.— Scott A. Winters

SW — “So tell me about your background; how you got involved with the activity,
as well as with FJM.”
BV — “Well, I was born and raised in South Carolina and will always be a Southern boy at heart. I joined the
marching band my freshman year of high school; one of my best friends was in the colorguard. I “accidentally”
stole her rifle my sophomore year (sorry Sabrina!) and became a backyard-spinning beast. My infatuation with
pageantry continued to grow; luckily my mom was a nurturing German woman that didn’t fully understand
why I wanted to glue glitter on a silk scarf, tie it to an old broom handle and toss it up in the air – but she
also never questioned it. Along the way, my techniques became a little more refined and I had the wonderful
experiences of performing with the Infiniti Winterguard, Carolina Crown Drum Corps, Crown Guard and
Pride of Cincinnati.
After moving from South Carolina to Dayton, OH for winterguard I was offered a job teaching the FJM
summer clinics, which I did for two summers. This opportunity completely changed my life and is one of the
most memorable, rewarding adventures I’ve taken. Through a stroke of luck an inter-office position became
available during my 2nd summer and I jumped at the chance to work for this respected company that had
taught me so much. I remember the first time I walked into the FJM building and saw rows and rows of
brightly colored fabrics, sequin trims, etc. It was basically love at first sight. And yes, I realize that last statement
is embarrassing…but here I am today!”
SW — “So you like color?”
BV — “I LOVE it, actually. Can you imagine a world where everything was grey, black and white? How boring!
I enjoy smart use of color best; you can never go wrong with a palette of harmonious colors. However I also
admire people that are willing to take risks. Some of my favorite looks have come together simply by throwing
caution to the wind and trying something unexpected. That philosophy should be applied more in our niche
activity!”
SW — “In addition to being a designer you also run your own independent colorguard and
continue to teach and judge locally – how do you stay inspired?”
BV — “That’s a good question, believe me there are days when I question my own sanity! But seriously, you
have to be passionate about what you’re doing. To me this is what I was born to do. I take inspiration from the
amazing kids I teach on a daily basis, from things that happen in my life, the good, the bad, the ugly and the
beautiful – I can see ideas in just about anything. Being a colorguard director is a full-time job as well; however
for me it’s an escape…it’s also a time for me to give back some of the valuable information that was bestowed
on me by amazing designers and technicians in the past. Plus it helps to have models on a weekend basis to
test out my wacky ideas on!
SW — “Last question, what do you look for in a successful design?”
BV — “This is an easy last question. I look for three things. One: does the customer like what they get? Is it
just what they imagined, or better? Do the kids stand a little taller, smile a little bigger, perform a litter harder?
If so, job well done. Two: does the garment make sense with the program? If you look at a costume and
think “I totally get why they’re wearing that!” it’s a great sign – both for you and the judging community. Third:
does the package seem complete? From the fit of the garment, to the styling of the hair and makeup, the
props, floor, shoes, drums, etc. What you choose to put on your body is only the starting foundation for a “look.”
When I see a group that has meticulously dotted their i’s and crossed their t’s when it comes to their overall
image – I can’t help but applaud. Loudly.”
As I walk into Byron’s office he is throwing tiny swatches of fabric on a design
board with careless abandon, staring intently at them while twirling his hair.
I start to chuckle, Byron turns to look at me, smiles, and says...
“this is very Jackson Pollock of me, huh?”
That wry sense of humor, dramatic flair and interesting method of blending color and
texture are a few of the reasons that Byron valentine is quickly becoming a “go-to”
designer for both colorguard and drumline uniforms. i sat down with Byron to get a little
background from him, and ask about what he looks for in a successful design...— scott A. winters

He doesn’t walk like a WGI and DCI Hall-of-Fame ego. There’s no sw
agger, no
boast or pride. In
fact, he moves lik
e a working dancer on his way to today’s
rehearsal. Always m
oving. Head down, voice quiet with the Southern accent
he’s never really lost. He’s busy, on a May afternoon in northern California,
coordinating the details of a show that will b
ecome the Blue Devils 14th DCI
title win.
He’s just arrive
d at “Mars”, t
he BD rehearsal site. Near the bright and busy B
lue Devils
HQ, it looks like a cratered, grassless la
ndscape; like Mars. He’s already jumped into
a short conversation with Jay M
urphy, the iconic drill w
riter. There’s some overheard
design-speak about collapsing arcs,
Japan, and “Laura”. Even in conversation, he’s
always moving.
Suddenly, I get his “fu
ll-laser” focus. His w
ords flow spontaneously. “I’m an exercise
in
improvisation…” he says, taking a breath “…
and I carry w
ith me the wonderful
experience of working with some of the greatest people in the business.” He’s been a
student every step of the way, in
sisting, “I c
ontinue to learn from incredible performers,
instructors and all my competitors. F
rom the Bridgemen, to the Spirit of Atlanta, fro
m
James Logan High School to The Blue Devils,
I’ve realized that it all co
mes down to
the performer. Give them the opportunity, f
rom choreography to costuming, and
th
ey will elevate the idea to an unbelievable level of theatricality!”
So why design? Why Costumes? “
Well, Costumes help the performer inhabit the
character, role, and style of the show in a way th
at elevates the communication
experience. I’m a big believer in costumes that provide the perfect o
pportunity for the
performer to express the moment with a bold statement!” H
e talks about Fashion, too,
and how he’s surrounded by emerging styl
es in California. “Keeping the look relevant
and vital in our co
ntemporary color guard, dance, and percussio
n world gives an exciting,
enlightened view without overshadowing the incredible talent that only our performers
can provide.” Typically C
handler, it all co
mes back to his students, “I
’m all about the
moment and turning moments into memories! “
As the BD Colorguard dances past us, he gets another inspiration. “Motion. Stretch wear
is all about the motion. And the variety at FJM gives everyone a chance to translate their
ideas from the field or the gym floor to the highest se
at in the house. If you can start
with incredible choices, quality construction and daring design, then I th
ink you can truly
concentrate on the ultimate answer...performance!” With that, he moves off to
work
another dance solo, one that will delight an audience three months from today.

Here are some of my top tips that I’ve picked up over the years that can hopefully help you and your weapon line.
Problem: Catching those tosses
Rosie’s Tip: Dropping is a color guard persons worst nightmare.
The key to success is having good and consistent
TECHNIQUE! You must practice proper tossing
technique and get everyone in your weapon line to
toss the exact same way. Take 10 to 60 minutes
out of EACH rehearsal to practice your tossing
technique. There are many options on which tech-
nique to use, the most important thing is that each
person in your group is using the SAME technique.
Problem: Bad Pitch on tosses (not keeping tosses
flat to the front)
Rosie’s Tip: Bad pitch can lead to so many other problems,
especially if you are trying to toss those high tosses.
Make sure to have someone stand on the side of
you to keep your tosses flat to the front. You can
also practice up against a wall to ensure you can
keep your tosses flat to the front. Stand about 8
inches away from the wall, facing it and throw a
toss... work until you can throw it perfectly flat.
Problem: Sabre catches looking weak
Rosie’s Tip: The sabre is weighted completely different than a
rifle, make sure you treat it differently when spinning
it. When your sabre comes down from a toss and
it is time for the catch, make sure to separate your
hands as much as possible. Putting a piece of
electrical tape about 1/3 away from the sabre tip can
help you strive for a nice catch hand position. This can
be referred to as “catching on the tape” and will
insure a much stronger look for your group on those
sabre catches.
Problem: Performance levels are not strong enough
Rosie’s Tip: INSPIRE the members of your color guard! Bring
out the video camera and record them during run
thrus and watch it as a group afterward. Give honest
constructive criticism and offer suggestions on how
to elevate the level of performance. Often times the
members feel like they are performing more than they
actually are when you watch it back.
Problem: Lack of confidence in performance or
bad attitudes in rehearsal
Rosie’s Tip: Always try to use the P-N-P sandwich when teaching.
That stands for Positive- Negative- Positive.
Try to sandwich your corrections or criticism in
between two positive comments. For instance:
“Susie I see that you are working really hard right now,
but the angle of your rifle toss still needs to go more
flat to the front. When you get that right you are
going to look like a star out on the field.”

she’s taught in Japan, Europe, and, of course, California. she’s spent
almost four years of her life on a staff bus. Born into a drum Corps
family, she started marching at age five.
She’s TJ Doucette, and in the world of Colorguard, she’s the “Perfectionist’s Perfectionist”.
Her award-winning wgi and dCi groups include James logan Hs,
fantasia, and the Blue devils, crediting “amazing” designers Jay
Murphy, scott Chandler, and karl lowe with forcing her “A” game.
But it’s her own performers that speak volumes about her
generous dedication, personal concern, and her unique ability
to bring precision, musicality, and emotion into their lives. We asked her to reveal a few
expert “tips” … and she couldn’t
wait to share them with you.
TIPS from TJ:
1. Technique exercises should:
1) define/measure time, space, energy utilized in the common motions
2) develop flexibility, control, strength and agility
3) be ‘modular’ so they can be easily lengthened/shortened for time
2. Reinforce technique throughout the season. Reducing time spent as the season shifts to design, then cleaning. Technique is the skeleton that supports design and excellence.
3. Embrace surface cleaning and micro-cleaning. When pressed for time, I like to hit the worst first, then the beginnings and endings. Attack main ideas, key counts/phrases and leave the baby finger details to those 10 hour days when micro-cleaning takes over. Ask yourself: “Do I want it right, or right now?”
4. Don’t clean the life out of the show. Sometimes “perfect” is perfectly boring. Try to balance the science with the art.
5. Be really smart about time. Everyone will want more. But don’t cheat the performers out of ensemble time, segments, and run-throughs. Repetition is time- consuming but necessary preparation.
6. I don’t like to use music nor do canned warm-up/tech program. Because I like to talk/correct through-out and want the students mentally engaged, not on auto-pilot.
Don’t clean the life
out of the show.
Sometimes “perfect”
is perfectly boring.
Try to balance the
science with the art.
Never let students fear error.
Train the brain; condition the body.
Leave the performer freedom
to make it live believably.

With over 20 years of experience within the winter guard activity as a
designer, instructor and adjudicator, Joe Sowders has a long list of
accolades. Currently the Director of Marketing/Sales Manager at FJM,
Joe established himself working with Mike & Mark Miller during their
years at Miamisburg High School and Miller’s Blackhawks (1988 through
1994). He then moved on to Northmont High School and produced
some of their most memorable productions (1995- Somewhere,
1996-Wall and Remembrance and 1997-Dante’s Inferno).
Many will remember Joe’s work with Nolan Independent of Texas which
produced back to back A and Open Class Champions (Anne Frank-1998
& Rite of Spring-1999). 1999 also marked Joe’s return to Miamisburg
High School with the beautiful “On an Ordinary Sunday” program.
Joe then moved to the Pacific Northwest to become Program Coordinator
and designer for the Northern Lights Youth Programs. His influence there
made an immediate impact as both the Open and the World ensembles
jumped up competitively with each placing 5th at WGI Finals in 2000.
For Joe’s first 4 years the NL World Guard was co-ed, and produced
remarkable presentations (Profination-2000, This is Your Life-2001,
Chaos & Order-2002 and War Letters-2003). But in 2004, a decision to
make the guard all-male was a large turning point in Northern Lights,
and WGI history.
Undoubtedly, most people will remember NL for their all-male years. The
2004 production of Road to Perdition caught many by surprise. The show
was designed completely “in the round” so it could be enjoyed from any
angle it was viewed. “I wanted to take advantage of the shape of the
arena in San Diego” Sowders said, “which had no true home side like UD
arena.” The show had a clocklike perfection that was mesmerizing. And
from the cinematic soundtrack, to the FJM/Cesario suit-like costumes, to
the three dimensional look of the circular cloud floor; this show provided
the audience a true theatrical experience.
Northern Lights went on to produce two more all-male productions with
“The Shawshank Redemption” in 2005 and “Meditation: In Memory of
John Lennon” in 2006. Both of these presentations received tremendous
acclaim, and solidified Northern Lights as a program that will always be
remembered… and missed.
Joe currently designs for World Class programs Braddock Independent,
Zydeco Colorguard and Centerville High School. “Throughout my WGI
experiences, I’ve been very fortunate to have worked with and learned
from the best people in the activity” said Joe. “The Miller family is why I
got involved in winter guard, and I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to
teach so many wonderful kids for all these years without their help and
guidance. Any success I’ve had is a direct reflection of them.”
Some advice from Joe
I’ve found that ideas for shows can really develop from anywhere and anything. It’s important to keep your mind open to all elements (music, theatre, movies, television, art museums, etc...) that can stimulate a new concept. It’s important that when something inspires you, that you then follow up on that motivation to the fullest extent. Each time you pursue an idea, or even a vague thought, that can end up taking you to a place that you would have never thought of going before. I compare it to opening doors. Each new door you go through and investigate, will lead you to more doors to open, and so on, and so on... Through this process, you will end up covering many contrasting ideas, subject matter and music.
Be sure that you make design selections based on something that you have a very strong vision about. The
idea and the music should be giving you visual images of what you would like to see happening on the floor. At
the same time, you must know your ensemble and their capabilities. You may believe that creating a show based
around fencing, and having all of the performers spin sabre, will bring down the house at wgi. But do your kids
have the experience on sabre to make that show a possibility?
Be careful that you don’t over reach with your concept. remember, you basically have about 5 minutes to get
your idea across. let’s say you want to interpret a shakespearean play such as Macbeth or romeo & Juliet. instead
of trying to convey every single complex detail of the plot, it might be best to simply focus on interpreting main
themes such as ambition and deceit, or the powerful nature of love. it could even be broken down further, such as
the simplicity of a kiss.
Know your history. when i first became involved in the activity, an experienced designer (and current wgi Hall
of fame member) told me, “You don’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been.” You
need to be fully aware of wgi’s past great shows and performances. To be able to see the progression of design
over the last 30 years is invaluable in attempting to know how you wish to help shape the future of the activity.
And with wgi’s extensive commitment to making past shows available, there’s no reason you can’t be well versed
in wgi history even if you weren’t around for it. Also, knowing the past will keep you from creating that perfect
show idea, that was actually created 10 years earlier.
Lastly, always keep your focus on the performers. it can be easy to get caught up in all of the superfluous as-
pects that can become a part of the activity. digital floors, massive props and elaborate costumes are all instruments
that can be used effectively. But the most important resource you have, is your ensemble. if you keep their best
interests in mind throughout the process, your rewards will always be assured.— Scott A. Winters

Step 1Remove bolt and strap before taping. Add strapping tape to mid-section and both ends of rifle. Use 1” strapping tape for less bulk.
Step 2Cover strapping tape with white vinyl tape. This adds additional protection, as well as provides a cleaner look by covering the strap-ping tape.
Step 3Screw bolt and strap back on the rifle, taking care not to over tighten.
