Review Questions How can you make
a solution?
How do you know if a mixture is a solution?
What does solubility refer to?
Chemicals
Citric Acid (C6H8O7)
Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO3)
Calcium Chloride (CaCl2)
Do you think these three chemicals will make solutions with water?
How can we find out?
Sodium Bicarbonate Is not as soluble as calcium chloride, citric acid, sodium chloride
What can we do to make get the rest to dissolve?
Calcium Chloride
As it is dissolving, the cup is getting warm.
Exothermic reactions release heat.
Procedure
Label cups: 1, 2, 3. Measure one 5 mL spoon of chemical & place in the labeled cup.Cup 1: calcium chloride & baking sodaCup 2: calcium chloride & citric acidCup 3: baking soda & citric acid
To one cup at a time, add 50 mL of water to
each cup and stir. Observe and record observations on Fizz Quiz Observation page.
Clean Up1. Save Cup 1’s solution!! Pour other solutions down sink drain.
2. Remove labels, rinse cups &
sticks in basin.
3. Clean table.
4. Sit down and be ready to
discuss observations.
Observations What happened?
Did the mixtures of chemicals form solutions when they were mixed with water?
Cup 1?
Cup 2?
Cup 3?
Precipitate
An insoluble material that forms during a chemical reaction
Calcium chloride + baking soda + H20
Chemical Reaction
calcium carbonate + CO2 + ?
What is the precipitate?
calcium carbonate CaCO3
Chalk
Chemical Equation
CaCl2 + NaHCO3 + H20 calcium carbonate + CO2 + ?
How can we separate the
calcium carbonate from the liquid?
Do you think the liquid that came through the filter is a solution?
How can we find out?

What new materials formed?
Vocabulary Chemical Reaction – occurs when two or more materials are mixed together and there is a change in the composition of the materials. The new material has different properties than the original materials.
Precipitate – a solid material that forms as a product of a reaction.
Questions What happens when a solution is made with water and two different solutes?
How do you know when a chemical reaction has occurred?
