Sodena is the financial instrument of the Navarra Government set up to promote business projects in the region.

Since its creation in 1984, it has supported 71 companies starting out with venture capital.

Its portfolio currently numbers about 50 direct investees, 28 of which are in the seed/start-up phase and it has accompanied 22 multinational companies to locate in Navarra (www.sodena.com).

0. What is Sodena?

4

Orizont is an accelerator for agri-food companies in their early phases promoted by Sodena in order to boost innovative projects at the agrifood sector and reinforce it.

Our goal is to become an international standard, driving up to 8 innovative projects in each call for participation. In the 1st edition there are 6 projects being accelerated.

We are looking for projects:

› In the agri-food industry: primary and agri-industrial sectors, in addition to supply processes and sales involving innovation and differentiation vis-à-vis existing formulas.

› Local, national or international projects looking for implementation and growth in Navarra.

› The company should be already set up or in the process of being set up.

› It should have a validated business model or a model currently undergoing validation.

› With a time to market of less than a year.

› With high growth potential.

› Innovative and providing differentiating features with regard to existing solutions.

1. What is Orizont?

2. Why an accelerator?

It is an optimal tool for promoting the entrepreneurial ecosystem and very effective in generating business network ecosystems. There are numerous acceleration initiatives of entrepreneurs in Spain, but not many sectoral examples, even less in food and agriculture.

Its importance in the Spanish economy is key. It ranges from the primary sector (agriculture, livestock and fisheries) and the processing industry (food, drinks production) to different ancillary industries (packaging, logistics, ICT, etc.). With a turnover of close to €100Bn, it accounts for about 9% to the national GDP and employs more than 2.3 million people.

Navarra is also a benchmark in this sector, where 1,270 companies operate, there are 24,000 people working in the sector, and it has a turnover of €3Bn, making up 7.2% of regional GDP.

Navarra also has major national and international agribusiness companies, leading R&D technology centers and excellent infrastructure and communications. Moreover its location in the Ebro Valley allows to enjoy an extensive and top-quality primary sector.

Among the R&D centers which support the Orizont project are:

› National Centre for Technology and Food Safety (CNTA).

› Navarra Institute of Agrifood Technologies and Infrastructure (INTIA).

› Department of Food Science at the University of Navarra.

› Agrobiotechnology Institute of the Public University of Navarra (IDAB).

3. Why the agrifood sector?

4.1 Duration

› Annual.

› A six-month-long acceleration program covering all the points of the business model.

› Establishing the project registered office and staying in Navarra for as long as Sodena has an interest in the capital of the company and no less than two years from the end of the acceleration process.

4.2 Financial support

› Each project may qualify for financial support for up to €110,000:

• An initial cash contribution of €20,000 made through an increase in capital, which means a 9% participation in the company by Sodena, the rest being an issue premium .

• Contribution of a usable €10,000 voucher for consulting or advisory services until 29/12/2017. These will be paid for by Sodena following proof of use.

• The provision of a participation loan of up to €80,000 which may be requested until 30/06/2017 (the final sum will be determined based on the needs of the project.)

4.3 Assessment and acceleration process

› The program is full of work sessions led by experts from The Navarra European Business Innovation Centre (CEIN) and other experts in specific areas to understand markets, create value propositions and develop personal skills.
