India has created history by progressing from a milk deficit nation with about 17 million MT post- independence to become the world’s largest milk producer in 1997. With a cumulative annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 6 percent, it is estimated that the current milk production in lndia is about 176 million MT (2017-18). ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, Haryana has been contributing to this success by providing highly skilled manpower to lead the dairy industry through its flagship undergraduate degree program in Dairy Technology, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in about 16 dairy science and technology disciplines.

Further, NDRI is contributing to the capacity building of the faculty of State Agricultural Universities through Centres of Advanced Faculty Training (CAFT) in Animal Genetics and Breeding and Dairy Processing. With dedicated faculty, diversity of students and prevailing educational ecosystem, ICAR-NDRI has been ranked aq the Best Agricultural University among State Agricultural Universities and Deemed Universities of ICAR consecutively for the last three years.

While the achievements are commendable for transforming rural India especially in the prevailing start-up ecosystem, a lot needs to be done in terms of producing dairy technocrats in the country who could be potential dairy entrepreneurs and job creators instead of job seekers. For coping up with the challenges for Indian dairy industry, there is a need for embracing techno-managerial skills by our graduates with greater professionalism. I firmly believe that it is high time to introduce diversified programmes to cater to the needs of the future dairy leaders of our country. In this context, it’s a moment of pride to announce the historic tripartite agreement between ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal, Haryana; Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA), Gujarat and Anand Agricultural University, Anand, Gujarat to introduce integrated Post Graduate Diploma in Dairy Management (PGDDM) for B.Tech. (Dairy Technology) students from the academic year

2019-20. I strongly feel that this innovative integrated programme would serve as a launchpad to the B.Tech (Dairy Technology) students to emerge as young techno-managers and contribute to the growth of Indian dairy industry to a next level.

I am sure that this integrated program shall fulfil the needs of dairy technology graduates and fulfill the demands of the dairy industry.

The Indian dairy sector is growing at a tremendous pace. The milk production in the country for the year 2017-18 touched 176.3 million tonnes which is around 21% of the world’s milk production. The per capita availability of milk in the country has also increased to 375 gm/day which is a very significant achievement.

The Indian dairy sector has not only excelled on the domestic front but also on the international stage. “Amul”, the home grown dairy giant, has been ranked the 9th largest milk processor in the world by the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN). The world’s biggest and reputed dairy players are looking to enter Indian dairy market. Hence, the future of Indian dairy sector seems to be very bright and its importance in economy cannot be contradicted in any manner. Consequently, the dairy sector now needs even more competent dairy professionals, preferably those who are trained on multiple dimensions of dairy business. At present there are around twenty Dairy Science Colleges in the country which provide courses ranging from Graduation to Doctorate level. The SMC College of Dairy Science is one of the oldest and most reputed Dairy Science Colleges in the country and its alumni are spread across the globe.

It is a matter of great pride that our University - through its SMC College of Dairy Science - responded promptly to the needs of the present day dairy sector and took the initiative to design and offer an integrated course on Dairy Management. The Post Graduate Diploma in Dairy Management (PGDDM) will be very useful from the point of view of the students as well as Dairy Industry. The students will get the management degree in five years along with B.Tech. (Dairy Technology). The Dairy Industry will benefit by recruiting PGDDM professionals who are good dairy technocrats as well as have good management skills.

I congratulate the teams of SMC College of Dairy Science, IRMA and NDRI who conceived the idea to offer the programme jointly and worked together tirelessly to design the course pedagogy. I extend all my good wishes for the success of the PGDDM programme and wish a bright future to the students.

Message From CHAIRMAN, NDDB & IRMA

It is a matter of pride for all of us that India has been the largest milk producing country in the world for well over two decades and the dairy sector has been making immense contribution in the livelihood of millions of dairy farmers. This journey from deficiency to self-sufficiency has been achieved through implementation of scientific programmes based on systematic processes by qualified and trained human resources many of whom have been the alumni of Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA).

IRMA, established by the Father of the White Revolution, Dr. Verghese Kurien in 1979 has been making available committed and dedicated rural management professionals through its flagship programme Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Management, Fellowship Programme in Rural Management and Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Management for Executives. For the working professionals, short and long duration Management Development Programmes are also organized.

Realising the need to equip the dairy technologists with the managerial capabilities for holistic development of the dairy sector, I am happy to inform that IRMA, Dairy Science College of Anand Agricultural University (SMCDS-AAU), Anand and National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal have come together to provide an ecosystem for the young aspirants to provide technical, social and managerial skills through a uniquely designed Five-Year Integrated Post Graduate Diploma in Dairy Management (PGDDM) programme from this academic year. I strongly feel that this innovative programme would provide the right ambience to the B. Tech (Dairy Technology) students to emerge as young professionals to take the dairy sector forward and also have better career prospects.

I invite the young aspirants to join this unique programme and avail the opportunity to become competent dairy sector professionals with technical and managerial skills.

Post Graduate Diploma in Dairy Management (PGDDM)4

It is a matter of great pleasure that AAU-IRMA-NDRI is starting a new academic program leading to PGDDM, combined with B.Tech. (Dairy Technology). This was a long cherished desire of the Faculty of Dairy Science of the then Gujarat Agricultural University. IRMA is our neighbour and primarily intends to produce manpower which can work in rural India. Cooperative dairy structure in our country is established with an intention to strengthen the socio-economic conditions of milk producers, which are mainly rural poor having 1-2 milch animals. SMC College of Dairy Science is thriving to produce trained manpower to process the milk produced by millions of farmers across the country and convert it into value added products, which in turn give more revenue to the farmers. Thus the ultimate goals of AAU and IRMA are complementary to each other.

This integrated program will open up the doors for the production of highly trained Dairy Technologists with superior managerial skills. This will also help in attracting better talent for this course. The course is designed by eminent faculty members from IRMA, AAU and NDRI and it will prove its worth in imparting the knowledge and skills required in a dairy manager. This will ultimately lead to better management of dairy plants leading to better profitability, which will help the milk producers of the country, bringing more prosperity in rural sector.

I am sure that the program shall be highly appreciated by the students, academicians and the dairy industry of India.

Since its inception in 1979, the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) has played a pioneering role in imparting quality education coupled with contemporary research in the rural sector. Its aim is to provide the sector managers having all the managerial skill while empathizing with the problems and challenges facing rural sector organizations. IRMA has drawn inspirations from its founder Chairman Dr. Verghese Kurien who always advocated that through IRMA’s programmes, “the young ones should be prepared to tread a path less travelled by others”. IRMA has reflected this uniqueness in all the programmes introduced so far. Through its flagship program, the Post-Graduate Diploma in Rural Management (PRM), IRMA has leveraged the intellectual and emotional strengths of the participants. IRMA introduced Fellow Programme in Rural Management (FPRM) in the year 2002 to contribute to the ever-increasing demand in academic spaces and especially in rural management. In the year 2018, IRMA introduced Executive Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Rural) or the PRMX to cater to the demand of mid-career professionals in the sector. Over these years, IRMA is proud to have a strong alumni base and some noted IRMANs are leaders in industry, government, education and non-profit organizations in India and abroad. The core tenets of academic excellence, integrity and creativity that IRMA has fostered have led it to become not just a knowledge institute but also a management school with a heart – a legacy that the Institute is proud of and one, which it cherishes.

The five-year integrated Post Graduate Programme in Dairy Management (PGDDM) took shape with the efforts of Dairy Science College of Anand Agricultural University, Anand (SMCDS-AAU) and National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal (ICAR – NDRI) and IRMA. This was done with the aim to create skilled and young management professionals for the dairy sector and to promote entrepreneurship in the sector. It was felt that such skill enhancement will encourage these young technocrats to remain in the sector and will provide professional support to dairy farmer producers and their institutions.

The PGDDM programme is structured in such a way that the students of SMCDS-AAU and NDRI will not come to IRMA campus but IRMA faculty will teach the courses in their respective campuses. It is expected that the students of SMCDS-AAU and NDRI joining this programme will see a change in perspective by going through the courses progressively in five years.

I hope that the programme attracts the best of talent from SMCDS-AAU and NDRI and becomes a resounding success.

Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) continues to contribute to the rural sector through its academic, research and consulting, management development programmes. It strives to maintain the momentum with continuous infusion of well-groomed and nurtured young professionals through its programmes including flagship Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Management (PGDRM), Fellow Programme in Rural Management (FPRM) and Executive Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Rural), [PGDMX(R)]. It takes pride in introducing the Post Graduate Diploma in Dairy Management (PGDDM), which is uniquely designed with collaboration between Dairy Science College-Anand Agricultural University (SMCDS-AAU), National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal (NDRI) and IRMA. The uniqueness lies in the networking of the three leading institutions in order to provide its best inputs to dairy technocrats progressively during their B.Tech (Dairy Technology) programme.

The PGDDM programme has two parts. Part I has various foundational and functional courses which will be taught over four years at the respective campuses of SMCDS-AAU and NDRI to B.Tech (DT) students pursuing their degrees. Part II envisages that students of SMCDS-AAU and NDRI join at the SMCDS-AAU campus after they successfully complete their B.Tech (DT) programme and Part-I. IRMA faculty will then teach the integrated and inter-disciplinary management courses in Part-II to provide the desired managerial skills to prepare students to assume various roles in dairy sector organizations and to take up entrepreneurial ventures as per their choice. The basic building block of this programme focuses on retaining the young professionals in the dairy sector. It is also planned that with successful completion of Part I of the programme and B.Tech (DT) programme, a student can opt out and in that case “Certificate in Dairy Management” will be issued.

It is part of the strategy that the PGDDM programme is in no way a replacement to the flagship PGDRM programme of IRMA. It is rather felt that after going through the PGDDM, a student will be inspired to join the PGDRM.

I personally feel that the PGDDM programme will encourage B.Tech (DT) students to compete for the few number of seats on offer. IRMA has been very sensitive to the cost of the programme and workload that the programme will likely provide while retaining the quality and philosophy of the Institute.

I wish the programme success.

Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA)IRMA was established in 1979 at Anand, Gujarat with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC), the Government of India, Government of Gujarat, the erstwhile Indian Dairy Corporation and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). The rationale behind its establishment had to do with providing management education, training, research and consultancy support to co-operatives and rural development organisations in India.

The genesis of IRMA is owed to Dr. Kurien’s work with dairy co-operatives, which revolutionized the dairy industry in the country. It was founded with the belief that the key to effective rural development lies in professional management. Professionalising rural management involves synergising specific yet unmet needs of the rural sector with the formal techniques and skills of management professionals. Linking the two are the ‘rural managers’ graduating from IRMA after undergoing a two-year diploma (PRM) programme in rural management. Born out of a maverick’s dream IRMA is, today, at the forefront of Professionalising the development of India’s rural sector. Over the years it has provided management training, support and research facilities to students committed to rural development drawing, in the process, co-operatives, non-government organisations, government development agencies, international development organisations, and funding agencies towards it.

IRMA FACULTYFaculty at IRMA is renowned in the field of rural management with extraordinary teachers and dedicated mentors. They recognize teaching as an emancipating and unifying activity. They are transformative in approach with a focus on sustainability and equity. Each member, irrespective of her/his domain of expertise, continuously strives to nurture empathy, creativity, excellence and integrity in students of IRMA.

Individually as well as collectively, IRMA faculty enjoys strong research collaboration with national and international institutions of repute in the areas of food security, technology in agriculture, poverty, financial inclusion, natural resources, climate change, local governance, corporate social responsibility, leadership, among several others.

About the ProgrammeIn its endeavour to serve the dairy industry with the best quality professional manpower, the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), offers an integrated programme leading to “Post Graduate Diploma in Dairy Management” in collaboration with IRMA, which aims to turn out highly skilled Dairy Technologists having excellent managerial capabilities.

The dairy sector of the country is growing rapidly and in order to support this growth, trained professionals are needed at both managerial and non-managerial positions in dairy organizations. It has been observed that B.Tech (Dairy Technology) students who are employed by the dairy industry are usually placed at supervisory/lower levels of managerial positions, whereas for pure managerial positions in dairy industry, candidates with management qualifications such as Master of Business Administration (MBA) or an equivalent degree are preferred. Many of these MBA students have their graduation-level education in a field other than dairy technology. When such graduates are placed in managerial positions in the dairy industry, they face challenges due to lack of technical knowledge about the field. It is thus important to consider that the role of dairy technologists with added management qualification would be more beneficial to the industry. Besides, entrepreneurial skills provided to these young minds would pave the way for creating more entrepreneurs in the dairy sector. With this thought in mind, this integrated program has been introduced. It will award the degree of B.Tech (Dairy Technology) after four years of study and PGDDM after completion of the fifth year. A similar programme will be operated at

SMC college of Dairy Science, Anand Agricultural University, Anand also in collaboration with IRMA.

The five year integrated Post Graduate Diploma in Dairy Management (PGDDM) is a collaborative programme of Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA), SMC College of Dairy Science, Anand Agricultural University (SMCDS-AAU), Anand and National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal.

Administration of the ProgrammeThe conduct of the programme in all its aspects shall be the responsibility of a Steering Committee. The Chairperson is the Convener of the Committee. This will be notified by Vice Chancellor, AAU. This committee will be constituted with representatives from SMCDS - AAU, ICAR - NDRI and IRMA.

The Steering Committee reviews all matters in relation to admissions, course contents, programme delivery, conduct of examinations, evaluation, grades and feedback. The committee lays down and approves eligibility norms and procedure for admissions. It prescribes procedure, norms and standards for examinations, evaluation and grading. The Programme Office provides support to the Committee for all activities relating to programme.
