Afterword

One thoughtful idea for someone may be slightly offensive to him or her, especially if they take it out of context. Always watch how you word your sentences and examine your intention before acting on them. This assignment, five-seven-nine, is an assignment that is designed to make the student learn to tell stories through pictures without words. It is also designed to teach the usefulness of techniques such as sequencing, framing and composing, and controlling camera functions. In writing the story I chose to base it on a picture involving a family looking at something outside their car. As I began to write different stories for this picture, I came up with two different stories. The first was a story telling of the grandfather’s previous experiences in the city and the gangs. The second was a story telling of an extremely annoying aunt who was telling her family they needed to get her a new red car after they grow up. As the assign-ment came to the point of telling one of my stories through photos, I chose the annoying aunt story. As I began the assignment I decided to use the techniques I have learned throughout class. The technique I used for this assignment was foreshortening. I decided instead of using a simple toy car, I would use my camera controls to make the car I took a photo of seem like it fit inside the palm of someone’s hand. Once all my photos were sequenced I started to decide on how I wanted to edit the photos to create a sense of age and time. As I commenced to edit the photos I started with a simple black and white. After that, I decided that most of the photos should have a vignette and graininess to them. My stories all tell of an annoying aunt who is the antagonist of the stories. She is taking care of her sister’s kids and is telling them how they should get good jobs and afterwards buy her a nice new red car that she saw on the street. The main character, whose viewpoint is used in the story, is thinking of using his small allotment of allowance at the dime store. Once inside he finds a small red toy car and gets a really snarky idea of what to do with it. He buys the car and takes it out to his aunt who gets livid with him. After all the hard work had been done, I was glad to have been able to use what I have learned in the class to tell a story through simple photos.
