Notes for the Teacher/Director

There are several main speaking parts in every show. These main characters often speak in

the same order. If you have performers who are not sure when to speak, placing each

performer next to the performer who delivers their cue may help the children to know when

to come in. It may not help them remember their lines but it should help their cues. If you can

cast adults as Mother Christmas and as a teacher, please do.

The student version of the script has very few stage directions. This version may be copied.

The children could write any relevant moves or directions on their script. They could

highlight their lines. This is good training for later acting roles. The teacher’s script contains

directions, ideas, etc. These are optional and each director should stage the musical in a way

that best suits their setting and performers.

In dialogue, if a word is in italics it means an emphasis is used. Here’s an example.

CRACKER [Over the protests] Well hang on. [Silence] Maybe it does make sense.

In this line of dialogue, the word ‘does’ is stressed. How much of a stress is up to you.

The stage directions are in italics and in brackets. Here’s an example.

BLING Not a computer - [Takes out and displays a mobile phone] - a phone.

In this case BLING produces and shows a mobile phone even a pretend one. Nobody speaks

the stage directions and most of them do not appear in the script for the students.

Many of the characters have non-gender specific names e.g. Turkey, Star, Ribbon, Bling.

This means the role can be played by either a boy or a girl. If the character is BOY 1 or

GIRL 2, in a single-sex cast, simply change the name and add another number.

On many occasions the character who speaks or reacts is plural. OTHERS means everyone

else. You will need to rehearse these situations to make sure that everyone who is meant to

speak or react does so. It is easy in a mass response for some to be asleep. Where you have a

mixture of words in a mass response, this too needs explaining. Here’s an example.

OTHERS [Agree] That’s right … Me too … [etc.]

‘OTHERS’ means everyone else. They have to sort out their response and some of the things

they could say are listed. Maybe the performers could suggest some other words to suit.

That’s why there is an ‘etc.’ in brackets. The idea is that the words spoken are spoken at the

same or about the same time. Give a group one word or words and another group a different

response. This gives the impression of a hubbub in a room where many people speak at once.

There are not many sound effects to be used but the letters FX means sound effects.

A principal is a main actor or one who has dialogue. The other performers, if you use them,

are the company members or sometimes called the chorus.

All the songs have a dance break or an instrumental section. There is no singing at these

times. Sometimes instead of a dance there is dialogue during the song. You have to make the

dialogue fit in the space. You don’t want the dialogue to finish too soon or too late. Rehearse.

Chookas*. *In some countries this means ‘good luck’. ‘Break a leg’ is another saying.

Cast and Costumes

The students from a class or classes are the stars of the show. Everyone sings and moves.

There are seven main speaking parts - Turkey, Star, Ribbon, Bling, Bow, Sleigh and

Cracker. Where the word OTHERS is used, that could include the entire company and not

just the principals. Other smaller principal roles are King Herod, Three Shepherds and the

Three Wise Men. The students are dressed as they would for school. The special or

historical characters need to be in appropriate costumes.

Set

It’s inside a classroom and we don’t see the teacher, Mrs./Ms. Jones. You could have desks

and chairs upstage and possibly on one or both sides. The fourth wall [the space the audience

looks through] is where the teacher would stand at the invisible blackboard/whiteboard.

The Play

[Curtain rises on school class room. It is the week before Christmas and the room has a small tree and some

decorations. The students come in from play and are excited. MUSIC BEGINS and the Company sing]

Only Seven More Sleeps

STUDENTS One, two, three, four, five, six, seven

Seven more sleeps, seven more sleeps, seven more sleeps to go.

There are seven more sleeps till Christmas

Only seven more sleeps to go

Till we wake up early for the hurly burly

Of the Festive season show.

There are still more gifts to purchase

And of course some mistletoe

But there are seven more sleeps till Christmas

Only seven more sleeps to go

[Company dance and then repeat the chorus. Song ends. If you have a large cast, the chorus members could

return to their desk upstage and/or to the side. The main characters sit or stand centre-stage and discuss their

activity. Some might collect unfinished paper chains or unwrapped boxes]

TURKEY [Announcing] Mrs. Jones said we can finish making our decorations.

STAR I’ve got to complete my Christmas cards.

RIBBON And I’ve only got one more present to wrap.

BLING Well I find that very strange.

OTHERS Strange?

BLING Yes, why are you all so slow?

OTHERS Slow?

BLING I finished my Christmas shopping and sent all my Christmas cards last month.

OTHERS [OTHERS react. Surprised, impressed or jealous] What?

BOW [Surprised] Did you say ‘Last month’?

Computer Christmas page 4 - Words and Music by Cenarth Fox

SLEIGH You have to be fibbing.

CRACKER Ah, I know why. It’s because you haven’t got any friends.

BLING Not true.

TURKEY No, Bling has lots and lots of friends.

STAR Then it’s because you started very, very early.

BLING Started early and finished in ten minutes.

OTHERS [Amazed] Ten minutes?

RIBBON Now you are being silly.

BOW [Can’t believe it] You bought presents for all your family and friends in just ten

minutes?

BLING And sent everyone a Christmas card as well.

OTHERS [Reaction from OTHERS. This is truly remarkable] Cards too?

SLEIGH That is amazing. I’ve still got loads of presents to buy and wrap.

CRACKER And I haven’t even started writing my Christmas cards.

OTHERS [Agree] That’s right … Me too … [etc.]

TURKEY Hang on. There’s got to be some sort of trick here.

STAR Yes, Bling, tell us how you did it.

BLING Easy. [Pause, looks at them and smiles] Digital.

OTHERS [Shocked] Digital?

RIBBON You mean you did it all on a computer?

BLING Not a computer - [Takes out and displays a mobile phone] - a phone.

OTHERS [Still shocked] A phone?

BLING That’s the beauty of technology. My parents allowed me to use their credit

card to pay for all my presents.

BOW But that means you didn’t pay for your presents.

BLING I’ll pay them back after Christmas.

SLEIGH I used my own cash. I saved all my pocket money.

OTHERS Me too … So did I. [etc.]

BLING And I sent all my Christmas cards in a [Snaps fingers] nanosecond.

OTHERS [Stunned] A nanosecond!

CRACKER How?

BLING Email.

OTHERS [Shocked] Email!

BLING You just choose the card online, add the greeting and hit SEND.

TURKEY The same card to everyone?

STAR No envelope and no stamp?

RIBBON No writing or drawing?

BLING [Happy] And now I’ve got all this spare time just to have fun.

BOW [Unhappy] I think that is really, really unfair. You’ve taken away work for the

postie.

OTHERS [They agree] You have.

BLING Nonsense.

SLEIGH The posties like bringing Christmas cheer.

OTHERS [They agree] They do.

BLING [Scoffs] Don’t be so old-fashioned. Move with the times. It’s the new way to

celebrate Christmas.

OTHERS [Protesting] It’s silly … I don’t like it. [etc.]

CRACKER [Over the protests] Well hang on. [Silence] Maybe it does make sense.

Computer Christmas page 5 - Words and Music by Cenarth Fox

OTHERS [Shocked] What?

BLING Of course it makes sense. Tell me, how many presents have you bought this

Christmas? [Pause] Well?

TURKEY Nine.

STAR Eight.

RIBBON Five.

BOW Six.

SLEIGH Seven.

CRACKER Forty-six.

OTHERS [Surprised] Forty-six?

BLING Cracker’s pet mice all had babies.

OTHERS Pet mice?

BLING And how many cards will you give this Christmas?

TURKEY Twelve.

STAR Ten.

RIBBON Fifteen.

BOW Six.

SLEIGH Nine.

CRACKER Forty-seven. [Reaction] I have a lot of friends.

BLING Now just think for a minute. To buy all those presents and post all those cards,

what did you have to do?

TURKEY Visit lots of shops.

STAR Lots and lots of shops.

RIBBON My mother got cross when she couldn’t find a parking space.

BOW Some of the things I wanted to buy were sold out.

SLEIGH It was really, really tiring.

CRACKER And forty-six presents is a lot of shopping.

BLING So that’s why I use my phone. Order and send online.

TURKEY You mean no wrapping paper, no cards, no envelopes and no stamps.

STAR That’s a very big saving.

BLING [A rallying cry] Exactly; so come on and join the revolution.

OTHERS [Cheer over music introduction. MUSIC BEGINS and the STUDENTS cheer then sing]

Digital Christmas

STUDENTS Say goodbye to shopping, say goodbye to stores

Say goodbye to wrapping gifts and all those Christmas chores

Say goodbye to writing, no more paper cards

We have found a brand new way

To send our kind regards.

Digital, digital Christmas

It’s an online festive scene

Digital, digital Christmas

And it’s simply thanks to a machine.

There’s a saving in money, a saving in time

A saving in effort oh it’s so sublime.

Digital, digital Christmas

It’s an online festive scene.

Computer Christmas page 6 - Words and Music by Cenarth Fox

[STUDENTS dance then repeat the chorus. The company members could move back to the desks or

sides of the classroom. The principals continue their discussion]

BLING So now you can throw away those cards and gifts and have some fun.

RIBBON Just a minute. What about the wrapping and the giving of presents?

BOW Yes, I’ve got lots of wrapping paper.

BLING You don’t need it.

OTHERS [Shocked] What?

SLEIGH But presents have to be wrapped.

CRACKER All forty-six of them.

BLING You don’t understand. The people who sell presents online, wrap and deliver

the presents for you.

TURKEY What, everything?

BLING Everything.

STAR So all we do is order and forget?

BLING Exactly. Life is now a breeze.

OTHERS [Hubbub]

RIBBON But something doesn’t seem right.

BOW I always like to see the reaction when my friends receive their presents.

OTHERS [Agree] That’s right … Me too. [etc.]

SLEIGH And I like to watch them open their present.

OTHERS [Agree] That’s right … Me too. [etc.]

CRACKER My mice want me to deliver their presents in person.

BLING [Frustrated] Oh please. The world has changed. It’s now gone digital.

TURKEY But do we all have to behave like Bling?

STAR We don’t have to but it will save us a lot of time.

RIBBON And a lot of money.

BOW We can use the money we save to buy next year’s presents.

SLEIGH Well I still like choosing presents in person.

OTHERS [Murmur agreement]

CRACKER Me too. And besides, my pet mice don’t use the Internet.

BLING [Annoyed] Oh stop; you’re all living in the Dark Ages. Can’t you see that

science and technology have changed the world? [Pause] Well?

TURKEY What do you mean?

BLING [Quizzing them] Do you all have a refrigerator in your home?

OTHERS Yes.

BLING Do you all have a horse and cart in your garage?

OTHERS No.

BLING Do you all have a telephone in your home?

OTHERS Yes.

BLING Well there you are. Without a fridge your ice-cream would melt.

STAR [Understands] Yes and without a phone we wouldn’t be able to call an

ambulance or the fire brigade or order a pizza.

RIBBON And with a horse and cart, we’d take ages to travel anywhere.

BOW And in a cart we’d get wet when it rained.

SLEIGH So science has given us some good inventions. Agreed?

OTHERS [Agree] Yes … That’s true … I suppose so. [etc.]

CRACKER Science has given my mice a wheel and boy do they love to race around in it.

Computer Christmas page 7 - Words and Music by Cenarth Fox

BLING [Happy because at last they understand] Thank you; now you can see how change is

good. Buying presents online and sending Christmas cards by email are

brilliant ideas for humans. We can forget the old-fashioned ways.

TURKEY I don’t want to forget. After all, the first Christmas was old-fashioned.

STAR Yes, Mary rode on a donkey.

OTHERS No cars.

RIBBON And the three wise men rode on camels.

OTHERS No planes.

BLING But imagine the first Christmas if it had been digital.

OTHERS [Surprised] What?

BLING Imagine the first computer Christmas. Technology would make Christmas a

whole new experience.

BOW [Excited, pointing] Look; isn’t that King Herod! [OTHERS turn and look. KING HEROD enters and stands alone. If you have lighting

facilities, you could dim lights on the company and spotlight KING]

FX Sound of mobile phone is heard.

KING [Takes phone out of pocket or purse and speaks into it. FX stops] Hello; King Herod

speaking. [Pause] Did you say a baby boy has just been born? [Pause] His name

is Jesus and he’s what? [Pause] The King of the Jews? But I’m the King. [Pause.

Anger increases] Right, email me the details of every baby boy in the region.

[Louder] Now! [Puts phone away and calls as he exits] Call out the guards! [HEROD exits and lighting if used returns to normal]

OTHERS [Hubbub. They buzz with excitement]

BLING Now that’s what might have happened if the first Christmas had been digital.

SLEIGH [Pointing] Look; isn’t that the Three Wise Men! [OTHERS turn and look. THREE WISE MEN enter and stand together. If you have lighting

facilities, you could dim lights on the company and spotlight the three men]

WISE 1 I think we’re lost.

WISE 2 We just have to follow the Star of Bethlehem.

WISE 3 Okay but what happens if it gets cloudy and we can’t see the star?

WISE 1 Hey, why don’t we use the GPS?

WISE 2 Of course. [Realises he doesn’t know what that means] Ah, what’s the GPS? WISE 3 [Taking out device] The Global Positioning System. [Fiddles with device]

WISE 1 [Telling WISE 3] We’re looking for the town of Bethlehem.

WISE 2 [Telling WISE 3] It’s just a few clicks south of Jerusalem.

WISE 3 [Tapping device] Beth - le - hem. [Pause] Got it. Ah, it’s … [Turns and heads off in

new direction] this way. Come on. [The other WISE MEN follow and all three exit. Lighting if used returns to normal]

OTHERS [Hubbub. They buzz with excitement]

CRACKER Wow! That was amazing.

BLING I told you technology was fantastic.

TURKEY [Pointing] Look; isn’t that the Christmas shepherds! [OTHERS turn and look. Three SHEPHERDS enter and stand together. If you have lighting

facilities, you could dim lights on the company and spotlight the shepherds although it is night

where they are]

SHEP 1 [Trying to keep warm] I’m cold and I think it’s going to rain.

SHEP 2 We have to stay here and protect the sheep.

SHEP 3 [Taking out iPad or similar] I’ll check the weather forecast on my tablet. [Pause.

Shocked] Oh no! [The other SHEPHERDS crowd around]

Computer Christmas page 8 - Words and Music by Cenarth Fox

SHEP 1 What is it?

SHEP 2 What have you seen?

SHEP 3 It’s an angel with a message.

SHEP 1 [Reading the message] “Do not be afraid. I bring good news of great joy.”

SHEP 2 [Continues reading] “A Saviour has been born in the town of Bethlehem.”

SHEP 3 [Packing up tablet] Come on; let’s go meet this heavenly child. [The SHEPHERDS exit. Lighting if used returns to normal]

OTHERS [Hubbub. They buzz with excitement]

STAR I can’t believe it. The angel didn’t have to leave heaven.

RIBBON The angel sent the news to the shepherds online.

BLING A digital Christmas; I told you change can be good. [MUSIC BEGINS. The extra seven characters return for this number - King, Wise men and

Shepherds]

Change Can Be Good

COMPANY New inventions are exciting, new ideas are great

New equipment is inviting, puts you in a state

New devices they save you money, new machines save work

So learn to welcome new things, they make a marvelous perk.

Change can be good, change can be great

Don’t be afraid of change

Change can be fun, help everyone

Don’t be too staid with change.

You should eye it, try it, may be just buy it

Apply it it’s fun to arrange

Cos change can be good, change can be great

Don’t be afraid of change.

[Dialogue over the music]

HEROD [Talking to others on stage] My mobile [cell phone] is just the best. I get messages

from all my staff on my phone. And I can give orders instantly.

WISE 1 As wise men, we travel a lot and often get lost.

WISE 2 But not any more.

WISE 3 And it’s all thanks to our Global Positioning System.

SHEP 1 Shepherds can become pretty lonely out in the hills.

SHEP 2 But we’re never out of touch.

SHEP 3 And it’s all thanks to our tablet. [COMPANY repeats the chorus. The seven costumed principals either go off or move upstage

or to the sides]

BLING Now you have to admit, this Christmas has been different.

BOW Technology is certainly brilliant but some things will never change.

SLEIGH I agree, even if I can’t think of a single thing.

CRACKER Having pets will always be cool.

OTHERS [Agree] You’re right … That’s true … I agree. [etc.]

TURKEY Actually there are many things that will never change and friendship is one.

STAR And kindness.

RIBBON And love and forgiveness.

Letters to Santa

Cast and Costumes

Cast members are the elves living at the North Pole helping Santa make the toys. The elves

read the letters sent to Santa and help him prepare for each new Christmas. The main elves

are Neve, Bax, Jarvey, Thrip, Offlit, Hi and Peckle. The rest of the company are all elves.

If each elf wants to invent or use their real first name, encourage them to do so. The elves

look like, well, elves. When choosing which child plays which part, you might want to

consider the lines the elves read in the scene with letters. Remember they are playing

themselves so a letter about being neat and tidy will be doubly funny if the actor reading that

letter is anything but tidy.

Set

It’s a room in Santa’s workshop at the North Pole. It could be decorated with all manner of

Christmas decorations.

The Play

[Curtain rises on busy workroom filled with elves. It is a month before Christmas. MUSIC BEGINS. The elves

stop work and the entire Company sings]

At the North Pole

ELVES Working hard, working hard, working hard each year

Mustn’t stop, cannot stop, Christmas Eve draws near

Making things, baking things, spreading Christmas cheer

Santa’s little helpers, we hope that now is clear.

Here we are at the North Pole

And we’re working hard for you

Here we are at the North Pole

Helping Santa to get through

We read lots ‘n lots of letters

Make lots ‘n lots of toys

Do lots of things for Santa

For all the girls and boys

Oh here we are at the North Pole

And we’re working hard for you

[During the dance break the elves pass a soft toy or two along a line all as part of the dance. They then repeat

the chorus. Song ends. If you have a large cast, the chorus elves could move upstage and observe while the

principal elves move DC and chat]

NEVE [Announcing] Okay elves, Santa has asked me to give you his monthly report.

BAX [Unhappy] How come Santa always asks you to give the report?

JARVEY [Peacemaker] Now, now, remember your manners.

THRIP I’ll bet I’m in trouble again. I always get something wrong.

Letters to Santa page 12 Words and Music by Cenarth Fox

OFFLIT No that’s me. Someone asked for a dish and instead I made a fish.

HI It doesn’t matter so much if the present is wrong; it’s the thought that counts.

PECKLE [Worried] It’s me, isn’t it? Come on, tell me please.

NEVE I’m afraid so, Peckle. Santa wants to speak to you after today’s work is done.

BAX Off to the principal’s office again my friend.

JARVEY You had to see Santa last week too, Peckle.

THRIP Yes, why can’t you try a little harder?

OFFLIT Stop picking on Peckle. We all make mistakes.

HI But why, Peckle? Why does Peckle keep on making mistakes.

PECKLE It’s because …

OTHERS Yes?

PECKLE [Pause] It’s because …

OTHERS [Louder] Yes?

PECKLED It’s because … I can’t read.

OTHERS [Shocked] What?

NEVE You can’t read?

BAX Everyone can read.

JARVEY No they can’t and Peckle’s a good example.

THRIP You mean a bad example.

HI I can teach you.

PECKLE [Grateful] Oh would you, please. That would be absolutely wonderful.

NEVE We’ll all teach you.

OTHERS All of us?

BAX That’s what friends are for.

JARVEY To help one another. [MUSIC BEGINS. The elves gather around PECKLE and sing]

Friendship

ELVES When you have a problem try some friendship

When you have a worry call a friend.

In and out of school, friends are really cool

Friendship we can recommend.

When you’re in a pickle call a comrade

On a pal you can depend

When you have a problem try some friendship

When you have a worry call a friend.

[ELVES sing to PECKLE who gradually gets encouraged. During the dance break, some placards with words

CAT, MAT, SAT and SANTA are held up and PECKLE calls out the correct answer and after getting SANTA

correct there is a big cheer. Song is repeated then ends and elves return to where they were before the song]

THRIP Well there you go, Peckle. Telling someone you have a problem is half the

battle.

OFFLIT Any more problems, just ask. Isn’t that right everyone?

OTHERS [As one] That’s right.

Letters to Santa page 13 Words and Music by Cenarth Fox

HI Santa’s going to be very pleased with you, Peckle.

PECKLE Thank you, everyone. It’s really good to learn things.

[*This is an opportunity to have the elves play themselves. So when an elf whose real name is Tommy

Tucker reads a letter, the elf reads aloud that the letter is from Tommy Tucker. People in the audience

will know it’s Tommy being the elf and hopefully find this amusing. You may need to change the type

of gift according to the child or cast the right child in the first place]

NEVE Well come on then. It’s time to read some more letters from children. Here’s a

letter to Santa. [Holding piece of paper and reading] “Greetings to everyone at the

North Pole and especially to Santa. Please may I have any new video game

which is fun to play, makes me think but doesn’t have any violence. Yours

sincerely, [Insert real name of the performer playing this elf] *………………...” [Buzz

from OTHERS] Now, you’re next, Bax.

BAX [Holding piece of paper] Okay, here’s another letter to Santa. [Reading] “Dear

Father Christmas. Could I please have a brand new bicycle with a flag and a

bell and a place to carry all my books because I love to read. Yours sincerely,

[Insert real name of the performer playing this elf] *………………...” [Buzz from OTHERS]

[Now this is an example of where good casting is required. This elf needs to be someone who

is a bookworm] JARVEY Here’s another letter posted to the North Pole. [Holding piece of paper and reading]

“Hello Santa. How are you going? Okay I hope. I’m going pretty good but I’d

go even better if I had a surfboard. I hope it will fit in your sleigh and that you

land safely on our roof. Happy Christmas to you and all your elves with love

from *[Insert real name of the performer playing this elf] ……………………………………...” [Buzz even laughter from OTHERS] THRIP Here’s another letter. [Holding piece of paper and reading] “Hi Santa. I have been

so good this year, you won’t believe it. I’ve been so neat and tidy. I’m the

most tidy person in the whole wide world. I’ve cleaned my teeth and scrubbed

my shoes. I’ve folded my clothes and put all my rubbish in the right re-cycling

bins. I’ve been perfect so please remember all that when you read my list of

presents. See you soon. [Insert real name of performer *……………………..]

[Buzz from OTHERS]

[This would be funny if the student is not at all tidy]

OFFLIT Here’s a letter sent to the North Pole. [Holding piece of paper and reading] “Dear

Mister Santa. I am really looking forward to Christmas and hope that my list

of … 26 presents [Hubbub from OTHERS] is not too long. Please deliver the one

you think I would like the most. See you later. [Insert real name of performer

*……………………..]

[Buzz from OTHERS who say ‘26 presents’ etc]

HI This is a letter sent to Santa. [Holding piece of paper and reading] “Hi there old

man with a red suit and white whiskers. I think you are really cool. I’m really cool too and would love some really cool toys. Check you later, Santa, you

cool dude you. Signed [Insert real name of performer *……………………..]

[Buzz from OTHERS who say ‘cool dude’]

PECKLE This letter has just arrived. [Holding piece of paper and reading slowly. Remember

reading is a new skill] “Dear Santa. Please don’t bring me any presents this

Christmas. [Hubbub from OTHERS] I have lots of things already. Please give any

presents for me to someone who hasn’t got anything.”

Letters to Santa page 14 Words and Music by Cenarth Fox

OTHERS [Hubbub] Wow … Who wrote that? … No presents! [etc.]

NEVE That is amazing. No presents.

BAX Santa has never had a letter like that before.

JARVEY Will Santa do what the writer says?

THRIP And if he does, who will thank that kind boy or girl?

OFFLIT They won’t need any thanks because of the famous saying, “Virtue is its own

reward”.

HI And what does that mean?

PECKLE It means if you help someone or do something good, you get a great feeling of

satisfaction and happiness.

NEVE That’s right. When we helped you with your reading, we all felt good.

OTHERS [They talk over one another] That’s right … We did … I felt good. [etc.]

BAX We should tell Santa about that saying.

JARVEY We could sing about it to Santa.

THRIP Great idea. Let’s rehearse right now. [MUSIC BEGINS and the elves sing with glee]

Virtue is its own Reward

ELVES We all like getting presents on good old Christmas Day

We all like getting gifts and goods and things to help us play

But we can still be happy without a gift in view

That saying about ‘virtue’ is absolutely true.

Virtue is its own reward

You do good, you feel good, you smile

Virtue is its own reward

Your happiness comes with style

By helping somebody, a stranger or friend

By giving to others your joy knows no end

Because virtue is its own reward

You do good, you feel good, you smile.

OFFLIT [Calling over music] Come on, elves. Let’s rehearse a dance for Santa too. [The elves dance then repeat the chorus. They finish on a high]

HI That was the best fun I’ve had all year.

OTHERS [Agreement] It was … too right … I loved it.

PECKLE And I’ve learnt a new word - virtue - but first I’ll learn how to spell it.

OTHERS [Laughter, happiness] Well done, Peckle … Good on you, Peckle. [etc.]

NEVE Okay everyone; Santa needs these toys finished today so let’s get cracking. [ELVES all return to miming the making of presents]

OTHERS [Moving to work areas] I’ve nearly finished … Me too … I’ve got lots to do. [etc.]

[Once they settle down to work]

BAX Does anyone know how many presents Santa will deliver this Christmas?

JARVEY I tried counting one year and ran out of fingers and toes. [Laughter from OTHERS]

THRIP Does anyone ever wonder why we make presents every year?

Christmas Angels

Cast and Costumes

The angels are up in heaven watching the world to see who they can help. The main angels

are Archangel, Seraphim, Cherubim, Gabriel, Halo, Harpo and Wingso with as many

‘company’ angels as your performing space will allow. These ‘company’ angels can invent

their own name if they wish. Archangel is the leader and should be a strong performer to

carry off this important and large role.

Set

It’s a space/room in heaven where the angels live and watch over humans on Earth. Being

Christmas time there could be appropriate decorations in place.

The Play

[Curtain rises on angels who are full of beans welcoming the opportunity to tell the world just who they are and

what they do. It is a week before Christmas. MUSIC BEGINS. The entire company of angels burst into song]

We’re the Angels

ANGELS We’re the angels, yes the angels

And we’re looking down on you

Meet the angels, heaven’s angels

Bringing hope and peace to you

We’ve got a Seraphim, a Cherubim

A Gabriel as well

With lots of little halos for our personnel

We’re the angels, yes the angels

And we’re looking down on you.

[The angels dance and celebrate, repeat the chorus then gather to listen to their leader]

ARCH [Addressing the gathering of angels] Greetings to all you angels.

ANGELS Greetings to you.

ARCH Welcome to Heaven.

ANGELS Thank you.

ARCH I am the Archangel and your leader.

ANGELS Hello Archangel.

SERA I am Seraphim.

CHERU I am Cherubim.

GAB And I am Gabriel.

OTHERS Hello Seraphim, Cherubim and Gabriel.

ARCH So now you know all the important angels, are there any questions?

HALO Yes please.

ARCH Go ahead. I am able to answer all your tricky and complicated questions.

HALO My halo doesn’t fit.

ANGELS [Buzz with excitement]

Christmas Angels page 19 Words and Music by Cenarth Fox

SERA That’s not a question.

HARPO And my harp is out of tune.

CHERU That’s not a question either.

WINGSO And my wings don’t work. How can I fly to Earth with wonky wings?

ANGELS [HUBBUB from angels] Wonky wings … Can’t fly … Goodness me. [etc.]

ARCH [Calling over the noise] Thank you, angels, please be quiet. [They settle] All your

problems will be fixed as soon as possible.

SERA But first we have some good news. You all know that angels become happy

when a human becomes a good person.

ANGELS Yes, very happy.

CHERU Well we have just heard about some children being good down on Earth. [Here you read the names and good deeds of members of the cast. It could be doubly funny if

the angel reading the information is the person being described. For something a little cheeky,

you could add the name of a staff member or a well-known adult hopefully in the audience]

GAB [Reading] We have just heard about ………….. [Insert name of student in the play]

who has made the angels in Heaven rejoice because he [or she] tidied up his [or

her] desk two days in a row.

ANGELS [Clap and cheer. Don’t make the response too big at first. Build it so that the biggest chap

and cheer is at the end]

SERA [Reading] We have just heard about ………….. [Insert name of student in the play]

who has made the angels in Heaven rejoice because he [or she] stopped talking

for longer than five minutes.

ANGELS [Clap and cheer. Slightly bigger response than the first time]

GAB [Reading] We have just heard about ………….. [Insert name of student in the play]

who has made the angels in Heaven rejoice because he [or she] ate all his lunch

today including two pieces of fresh fruit.

ANGELS [Clap and cheer. Slightly bigger response than the second time]

ARCH And I have some extra special news. [Reading] We have just heard about

………….. [Insert name of teacher/well-known adult within the group] who has made

the angels in Heaven rejoice because he [or she] ………………………

[This is where you will need to invent something peculiar to the adult being named. Has this

person just become a mother or grandfather? Have they just won an award for community

service? Have they been recognised as a great community helper? Write in the reason for the

angels being happy and give that person some recognition. NOTE: If you only have a small

group you could mention everyone so as to not leave out any performer. It means you would

need to write the speech/speeches based on the template above]

ANGELS [Clap and cheer. Biggest response of all. MUSIC BEGINS and the angels celebrate]

We Like to Rejoice

ANGELS We like to hear that folk on Earth

Are doing all that’s good because

We like to rejoice.

We like to hear that folk on Earth

Are doing all they should because

We like to rejoice.

When a human is helpful with just a little thing

The angels are happy and gather round to sing.

You see we like to hear that folk on Earth

Have done the best they could because we like to rejoice.

Christmas Angels page 20 Words and Music by Cenarth Fox

[Dialogue over the music during the instrumental, the non-singing section]

ARCH [Calling] …………….. [Insert name] did a great thing and helped a friend.

ANGELS [Cheer at the news]

SERA [Calling] …………….. [Insert name] did a great thing and went to visit a sick

friend.

ANGELS [Cheer at the news]

CHERU [Calling] …………….. [Insert name] did a great thing and raised some money for

a poor family.

ANGELS [Cheer at the news]

GAB [Calling] …………….. [Insert name] did a great thing and helped a friend learn

to read.

ANGELS [Cheer at the news]

HALO [Calling] …………….. [Insert name] did a great thing and we’re just happy to

tell the whole world.

ARCH [Biggest announcement] That’s right. There was rejoicing among the angels!

ANGELS [Biggest cheer]

[The angels repeat the song and settle down once the singing is over]

ARCH Thank you once again, angels. Now it is time for our history quiz.

SERA We need three volunteers.

CHERU [Pointing] You, you and you. [HALO, HARPO and WINGSO are the three ‘volunteers’. They step forward and form a line

close together facing front]

GAB Before little angels can do their work, they need to know what angels have

done in the past.

ARCH So, one at a time, step forward and tell us something about the famous angels.

[Pointing at HALO] You can volunteer first.

HALO [Steps forward] I’m not really sure but I think some angels had to guide Mary

and Joseph a woman to a hotel.

SERA Correct. Very good, Halo.

HALO But they didn’t do a very good job and sent the people to a stable.

CHERU Yes all right. Back into line. Next! [HALO steps back and HARPO steps forward]

HARPO [Steps forward] I heard that an angel flew down to some shepherds who were

washing their socks by night.

GAB [Correcting] Watching their flocks by night. Goodness me. Next! [HARPO steps back and WINGSO steps forward]

WINGSO [Steps forward] I heard that an angel flew down and told Mary that she was

going to have a baby who was very special because he was going to be born

on Christmas Day.

ARCH Well done, Wingso. [WINGSO steps back into line] History is important, angels.

Don’t forget your past. [MUSIC BEGINS]

Don’t Forget the Angels

ANGELS Don’t forget the angels when you tell the Christmas tale

Don’t forget God’s messengers who lit the manger trail

Don’t forget the great news came when angels brought the mail

Don’t forget the angels when you tell the Christmas tale.

Christmas Angels page 21 Words and Music by Cenarth Fox

Oh we told Mary and Joseph, the Shepherds as well

News from on high we brought down

Good news and great news that Jesus is born

Worship the King with his crown.

Don’t forget the angels when you tell the Christmas tale.

[The angels dance and then repeat the chorus. Song ends and they settle once again]

ARCH A very important lesson, angels. We should all respect our ancestors and know

our history.

SERA Some people think angels are simply for decorating the top of their Christmas

Tree.

CHERU [Questioning the angels] Is that all angels are good for?

ANGELS [Calling] No!

GAB [Challenging them] Are you interested in far more nobler things?

ANGELS [Calling] Yes!

ARCH However, all work and no play is never a good thing.

SERA So from time to time one chosen angel may be allowed to sit on top of the tree.

CHERU Of course most of you are probably not interested.

GAB It’s hardly important and some say it’s pretty boring.

ARCH But just in case one of you might be interested I’ll ask a question. [Addressing

the gathering] Does any angel want to be on top of the tree? [Pandemonium. Every angel calls out, raises a hand or hands, jumps up and down and

generally goes crackers in order to be chosen. This needs to be choreographed with good

timing. Loud and busy at first with a gradual drop in volume and slowing down]

ANGELS Me … Take me … I do … Yes please! [etc.]

[The four leaders wave their arms to try and restore order]

SERA Quiet [Continues]

CHERU Settle down! [Continues]

GAB Stop this noise! [Continues]

[Gradually the racket fades and the angels come back down to Earth - in Heaven]

ARCH Goodness me. I’ve never heard such a racket in all my heavenly existence.

HALO Every angel wants to be on top of the tree.

HARPO We can be a sticky-beak and watch the children open their parents. [sic]

WINGSO And we can see the lady of the house kissing Santa under the mistletoe.

ANGELS [Big reaction] Wow … Kissing! … Sounds great [etc.]

SERA Yes, all right, please behave.

CHERU Angels are supposed to be …

GAB Angelic.

ARCH Exactly. You see Christmas has two important parts.

HALO Chocolates and crackers.

HARPO Presents and pudding.

WINGSO Bible tales and Brussels sprouts.

ANGELS [Big reaction of laughter and repeating some of the words which have just been spoken]

ARCH [Calling for quiet] Thank you. [The angels settle] I think that last suggestion was

very clever. [WINGSO is congratulated]

SERA Bible tales and Brussels sprouts?

CHERU Yes, Christmas is a mixture of the birth of Jesus and the love of a family.

Christmas Angels page 22 Words and Music by Cenarth Fox

GAB It’s a mixture of the serious and the fun.

HALO I vote for the fun.

HARPO Me too.

WINGSO And I vote for both.

ARCH Well said again, Wingso. Christmas is a mix of the baby in a manger and of

celebrating with our kith and kin. Do you agree?

ANGELS [Calling] Yes! [MUSIC BEGINS]

Got Our Wings

ANGELS We’ve got our wings, our harp and halo

And when you say, ‘Go’, we’ll fly in

With lots of love, good cheer and greetings

At all our meetings see us grin.

We have good news, we choose to tell you

A special baby is born a King

We’ve got our wings, our harp and our halo

It’s Christmas joy so come on sing.

[During the instrumental break, the angels take their bows with the main characters the last to do so. Then the

song is repeated with even the possibility of the company marching off and waving during the final bars of

music]
