Introduction

The System X Transmitter (TX) is the control unit which is used to communicate to allLinked products, including Dorgard X, Deafgard X and Freedor X. In the event that the firedetection and alarm system signals a fire alarm condition then the TX unit will commandall Linked products to activate according to their product type, e.g. Dorgard X will releasedoors, the Deafgard X Strobe LEDs will flash and the Pillow Pad will vibrate and Freedor X will release the door if it is set in free swing mode.

The TX unit leaves the factory configured in the acoustically linked mode, which meansthat when System X is installed it continually monitors the sound pressure level of the surrounding area. When a fire alarm is activated, the sound pressure level it generates andits frequency content is analysed by the TX unit. If the TX unit determines that an alarmcondition exists then it will communicate this condition to all Linked devices.

Should the local conditions during installation determine that the preferable mode of operation should be to electrically connect the TX unit directly to the automatic fire detection and alarm system (AFDAS) then it can be re-configured to operate in this hardwired mode. Having the TX unit continuously monitor the status of the FIRE relay withinthe control and indicating equipment (CIE) means that if an alarm condition occurs then itis communicated to all Linked devices.

System X must only be used for the purpose for which it is designed. It is not suitable forexternal use. Read this Guide and follow the instructions carefully, keep it in a safe placee.g. in your Fire Risk Assessment file, for future reference.

Supplementary information about the sound of a fire alarm:

The British Standard for fire alarm installation, BS5839-1: 2002 +A2:2008, (Clause 16.2),states: -

The sound pressure level of alarm signals should be generally, throughout all accessibleareas of the building not less than 65dB(A) . . . where the sound pressure level of background noise is greater than 60dB(A), the sound pressure level of the fire alarm signalshould be 5dB above the sound pressure level of the background noise.

In practice this rarely is the case and many audio alarms are masked by background noiselevels, particularly in noisy environments such as pubs and clubs. When the backgroundnoise levels are particularly high then consider using the TX unit in its hard wired configuration.

Important Information Prior to Installation

Prior to installation ensure:

1. A System X Site Survey has been conducted which will have determined.

a. The location of the TX unit.b. The number of TX units required to cover the locations of all System X receivers.c. The location of any possible sources of RF interference.

2. That a suitable Automatic Fire Detection and Alarm System is installed.

3. That if the TX unit is to be used in the hard wired mode, the fire alarm system maintenance company has been contacted to approve connection to the CIE.

4. The fire alarm CIE’s FIRE and FAULT Common and Normally Closed volt free contacts are available.

5. The fire alarm system is working correctly, i.e. the fire alarm CIE is not in fault state and the sounders work when activated.

6. The fire alarm CIE has battery back-up installed.

Note. The TX unit will only work once installed and commissioned. It musttherefore be installed by a Fireco Approved System X Installer.

Site Survey

Although System X has a design range of 100 metres, this is dependent on location asevery building and its surroundings are different. Electrical appliances, building materialsand other solid objects can affect range. For this reason a Site Survey must be carried outby an Approved System X Installer.

Before installation a Site Survey must be carried out on the building where System X is tobe installed to establish the transmitting and receiving equipment will be in range. TheApproved System X Installer will calculate the number of TX units needed for the building,as well as locations for them and the System X receiver units, such as Deafgard X. MultipleTX units can be added to the site if radio range needs to be increased.

An RF Interference Survey should also be carried out at the same time to assess the possible impact of local sources of RF interference on the System X installation.

If you have not had a Site Survey or have any questions contact your supplier or contactthe Technical Advice Line.

Location of the TX Unit

System X should only be installed by a System X Approved Installer after completion of a Fire Risk assessment by a competent person.

If your fire doors are being held open with wedges andyou have an audible fire alarm, a fire risk assessment isbound to confirm the efficacy of installing System X.

When used in the acoustically linked mode the TX unitshould be installed within 1 metre of a fire alarm bell orsounder that is situated in a quiet area such as a hallwayor office. Installation in noisy rooms, canteens, discos etccould affect reliability.

To comply with the recommendations within BS 7273-4the fire alarm bell or sounder should be part of an automatic fire detection and alarm system as defined inthe recommendations of BS 5839-1.

When configured in the hard wired mode there is moreflexibility as to where the TX unit can be sited. The TXunit can be connected directly to the CIE or to an analogue addressable loop through an input/output device.

One TX unit will communicate with all Linked productswithin a 100 metre range, although this will be dependentupon the construction and layout of the building. The installation of multiple TX units will increase the overallrange of installed system, thus allowing more receivers tobe installed.

It is not recommended to install the TX unit in locationswhere there is a concentration of metal nearby such as liftshafts, elevators and metal staircases. These might affectthe radio signal and therefore the performance of SystemX.

Installation and Range Test

IMPORTANT: If you are not a System X Approved Installer then do not tamper with theHardwired System X transmitter.

A Site Survey must have been completed prior to installation. If in any doubt consult the Technical Advice line. Locate the position for the TX unit according to the Site Survey.

Use Fitting Template to mark location holes for drilling.

Warning! Before drilling holes or fasteningScrews into the wall or ceiling, check the location of water pipes, electrical cables, gaspipes etc. Failure to do so could cause disruption to services in the building and mightresult in serious injury or death.

Use a 6mm drill bit and drill out the 2 x location holesto a depth of no more than 30mm.

Insert the wall plugs and screws supplied, but leavethe screw heads ‘proud’ of the wall by 5mm.

Acoustically Linked Mode

1. After installing Batteries, setting Ident, Time and any Night-time Release settings attach the TX unit onto the screws.

2. An external source of power is not required as the TX unit is powered by its own twin sets of batteries.

3. Fit the System X Badge to the top of the TX unit.

4. Perform a Range Test by pressing Button 4 RANGE TEST. The LCD will display TEST and the unit will send a message to all Linked units to check the radio integrity of the System, e.g. Dorgard X units will release their doors.

Hard Wired Mode

1. Prior to connecting the TX unit it should be decided how to wire the system. The TX unit is a single channel device and can monitor a FIRE relay or a FIRE and FAULT relay if they are wired in series with one another.

2. An external source of power is not required as the TX unit is powered by its own twin sets of batteries.

3. Fit the Cable Gland to the fire rated cable prior to fitting any connections. Depending on connection type, the Snappable Strip on the front of the TX unit should be snapped or trimmed to its desired length. Fire rated cable glands (not supplied) should also be fitted to the fire alarm CIE prior to fitting the cable.

4. It is important to make all connections to the TX unit prior to connecting them to the points on theCIE. This prevents possible short circuits in the system.

15

5. Fit the jumper switch provided to the jumper on the PCB assembly as shown. This disables the acoustic monitoring circuitry and activates the hard wired input monitoring electronics.

6. The CIE’s FIRE Normally Closed (N/C) and Common (C) contacts should be wired in series with the FAULT N/C and C contacts and this arrangement connected to the hard wired input to the TX unit.

7. If the Fault relay is not to be used then the TX unit’s input should be wired into the CIE’s FIRE N/C and C contacts.

8. After installing Batteries, setting Ident, Time and any Night-time Release settings attach the TX unit onto the screws.

9. Fit the System X Badge to the top of the TX unit.

10.Perform a Range Test by pressing Button 4 RANGE TEST. The LCD will display TEST and the unit will send a message to all Linked units to check the radio integrity of the System, e.g. Dorgard X unitswill release their doors.

If the FAULT relay in the CIEis left unconnected then theinstallation cannot complywith the fault monitoringconditions for a BS7273-4 CatA system. This should benoted in the CommissioningCertificate as Linked DorgardX units will not close if afault occurs in the fire alarmCIE or system.

Testing System X to the Fire alarm

Once correctly installed and a Range Test has been conducted the System must be testedto the AFDAS.

Acoustically Linked Mode

1. This is carried out to ensure that the TX unit responds to the fire alarm bell or sounder.

2. Sound fire alarm for a minimum of 30 seconds.

3. The TX unit in acoustically linked mode is designed to activate upon detecting the constant sound of the fire alarm for 20 seconds. The LCD on the TX unit will display FIRE when a fire alarm condition is acknowledged.

4. Check all Linked products have activated, e.g. Dorgard X has released the fire door.

5. If the TX unit does not respond to the fire alarm then adjust the sensitivity of the unit (see Sensitivity Adjustment).

Hard Wired Mode

1. This is carried out to ensure that the TX unit responds to the CIE or input/output device.

2. Set the AFDAS CIE into fire alarm condition by following recommendations of the relevant fire alarm systems instructions. If in doubt contact the buildings fire alarm maintenance company.

3. It is recommended the alarm is activated for a minimum of 30 seconds.

4. System X is designed to activate upon the FIRE relay entering an open circuit condition. The LCD on the unit will display ‘FIRE’ when a fire alarm condition is acknowledged.

5. Check all Linked products have activated, e.g. Dorgard X has released its fire door.

System X sends a Call-in message to all linked units every 10 minutes. If the Linked product, such as Dorgard X, misses 5 messages in a row it will Fail to Safe. The TX unitalso sends a Self Test message at midnight on the set day (see Setting the Time).

Note. Although System X self-tests every 7 days, weekly alarm tests areimperative. This will ensure that all Linked products are working correctly.

Sensitivity Adjustment

When operating the TX unit in the acoustically linkedmode, if it should be necessary to adjust the sensitivityof response to the fire alarm then insert a narrow electrical flat head screwdriver into the opening in theback cover and locate the adjustment screw. Rotatethe adjustment screw in accordance with the guidelines below, taking care not to over adjust as thiswill render the unit inoperative.

Adjusting Sensitivity if the TX unit is not sensitive enough, i.e. does not respond to thefire alarm:

1. Carefully insert screwdriver into hole in the back of the TX unit.

2. Turn clockwise through no more than 5 degrees (a small adjustment is equivalent to a large alteration in sensitivity).

3. Test System X to the fire alarm.

4. If problems persist repeat steps 1-3.

Note. The Adjustment Screw is limited in bothdirection, once you can feel resistance againstturning - stop to avoid damaging the unit.

If the TX unit is too sensitive (responds to no apparentsound) follow steps 1-4, but turn anti-clockwise in Step2.

Note. There is no sensitivity adjustment tomake if the TX unit is operating in the hardwired mode.
