he Department of Fisheries, Bangladesh publishes Fishery Statistical Yearbook of Bangladesh each year. The present publication is the 24th edition in this series. This yearbook contains information about fisheries production statistics

from July 2006 to June 2007. Scopes of this publication are to furnish information on district-wise finfish & shellfish production by resource type, fish habitats and species availability, carp fry collected from natural sources and that of produced in hatcheries, export of fish and fisheries products and other relevant data.

Fish culture has been expanding both vertically and horizontally as pond fish culture and shrimp farming offer tremendous potential. Efforts have been made to intensify community based culture practices to explore the huge potentials and maximize the production level in flood lands. Surveys revealed that, the catch of flood plains increased noticeably due to community based fisheries management. Industrial marine catch has decreased and on the other hand artisanal catch has increased to some extent.

We expect that the yearbook will provide useful information to decision makers, policy planners and development partners to plan appropriate management approaches for fisheries resources of the country. Besides, students, researchers and NGOs of fisheries and related discipline will benefit from the publication.

t gives me immense pleasure to say a few words on the occasion of the publication of Fishery Statistical Yearbook of Bangladesh, 2006-2007. It is an annual publication. Every year this publication has been coming out since 1983.

The publication is the output of collective effort of both field and desk officers of Fisheries Resources Survey System (FRSS). It is needless to say that this publication has become popular and useful. The users of this publication include scientists, policy makers, planners, implementers, technologists, educationists, stakeholders at home and abroad. Data are generally collected on sample basis following an approved methodology based on pre-defined frame. The frame work used for this survey is no doubt out-dated. Attempt will be made for modification and more effective in near future. I would like to extend thanks to Senior Upazila Officers/Upazila Officers, Inspectors of Marine wing for collecting some specific information. I am grateful to Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) and Divisional Forest Office, Khulna, for permitting to use their secondary data. It would have not been possible to publish the annual report without the spontaneous and active response of the Fishery Survey officers working in all districts. I like to thank all my colleagues who are directly or indirectly involved in this publication. I like to offer my heart-felt thanks to Md Rafiqul Islam, Director General, Department of Fisheries, for his encouragement, assistance and cooperation. I would like to extend thanks to BG press authorities for their full support in printing the publication. Mr Sitesh Chandra Choudhury, Fishery Survey Officer, Fishery Resources Survey System, Department of Fisheries, deserves appreciation for analyzing and formatting this report.
