    The fisheries industry includes any industry or activity concerned withtaking, culturing, processing, preserving, storing, transporting, marketing or

    selling fish or fish products.

    1.5 billion people depend upon fish for food, income & livelihood (2008-09)

    A recent study by the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) said

    that the fisheries sector in the country should be brought under the ambit of the

    Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Act so as to help it

    expand its market and ensure of an efficient system of tradeTill 2006-07, about 7.21 lakh hectare water area brought under scientific fish

    farming

    8.63 lakh fish farmers/ fishermen trained in improved practices & 12.38 lakh

    persons benefited till 2006-07
