Fisher HP Series control valves (figure 1) aresingle-port, high-pressure, globe- or angle-stylevalves with metal seats, cage guides, andpush-down-to-close valve plug action.
These valves are designed for high-pressureapplications in process control industries such aspower generation, hydrocarbon production, chemicalprocessing, and refining.
HP Series valves are designed with corrosionallowance; NACE compliant materials are available.Extra valve body wall thickness provides a safetymargin of protection against erosion, as well as extraprotection against corrosion due to chemical attack.Because these valves feature a thicker valve bodywall, they are available in higher intermediate ratingswith weld-end fittings.
Unless otherwise noted, all NACE references are toNACE MR0175-2002 and MR0103.

Balanced High-Temperature Trim
HPD
These valves use a balanced valve plug withgraphite piston rings and are well suited for generalapplications with process temperatures in excess of232C (450F), where extremely tight shutoff is notrequired.
Balanced Tight Shutoff Trim
HPT and HPAT
These valves use a balanced valve plug and offerexcellent shutoff with process temperatures below232C (450F). The temperature limits of HPT canbe extended above 232C (450F) to 316C(600F) by using PEEK (PolyEtherEtherKetone)anti-extrusion rings in combination with aspring-loaded PTFE seal. The PEEK anti-extrusionrings expand to help close off the clearance gaps onthe plug outside diameter and the cage insidediameter where the PTFE seal may extrude at hightemperatures and pressures.
Unbalanced Trim
HPS and HPAS
These valves have an unbalanced plug and provideexcellent shutoff.
Expanded EndsExpanded ends are available on the NPS 4 and 6CL900 and 1500 HP valves. The NPS 4 HP valvebody is offered with NPS 6 ends. The NPS 6 valve

body is offered with NPS 8 ends. Both flanged andbuttweld end valve bodies are offered with expandedends.
Cavitrol III, Whisper Trim III, andWhisperFlo CagesTo eliminate cavitation damage in a properly-sizedvalve, a Cavitrol III cage is available with HPS,HPAS, HPT, and HPAT control valves.
To help attenuate aerodynamic noise in gaseousservice, Whisper Trim III and WhisperFlo (figure 3)cages are available with HPD, HPS, HPAS, HPT,and HPAT control valves. Contact your EmersonProcess Management sales office for moreinformation.
Features Valve Plug Stability— Rugged cage guiding
provides increased valve plug stability, whichreduces vibration and mechanical noise.
Full Pressure Drop Capability—Ruggedconstruction allows full pressure drop capability inHP series valves.
Spiral-Wound Gaskets for Excellent SealingUnder All Service Conditions—Premium materialsare used in the construction of spiral-wound gasketsfor HP Series valves. These premium materials, which make up the standard spiral-wound gaskets, are N06600 (alloy 600)/graphite or N07750 (alloy X750)/graphite.
Compliance with the Clean Air Act—OptionalENVIRO-SEAL packing systems (figure 5) providean improved stem seal to help prevent the loss ofvaluable or emission of hazardous process fluid. TheENVIRO-SEAL packing systems feature PTFE orgraphite ULF.
Piping Economy—The availability ofexpanded end connections on NPS 4 and 6 HPvalves may eliminate the need for line swages whileaccommodating oversized piping arrangements.
Quick Change Trim—Maintenance is simpleand can easily be performed using common tools.
Trim components can be quickly removed andchanged with no need for special tools.
Standard Hard Trim Materials—The cage, valve plug, and other trim parts are manufacturedfrom hardened materials. This standard featureprovides excellent wear resistance.
Control of Low Flow Rates/TightShutoff—Micro-Flute and Micro-Form valve plugs(figures 7 and 8, respectively) provide superbrangeability in high-pressure, low-flow applications, while maintaining tight shutoff (table 4). A choice ofseveral restricted port diameters helps to matchvalve body capacity to required flow, to providenecessary control with full travel, and to preventthrottling near the seat.
In low-flow applications where cavitation damagemay occur, the Micro-Flat valve plug can be usedwith a special Cavitrol III cage. Contact yourEmerson Process Management sales office for moreinformation.
Increased Pressure/Temperature Ratings—HP Series valves with weld-end fittings haveincreased pressure/temperature ratings, calledintermediate ratings, as defined in ASME B16.34.The extra strength of these valves allows ratingshigher than the standard CL900 or 1500 ratingsspecified in B16.34. Contact your Emerson ProcessManagement sales office for further information onintermediate ratings.
Trim Interchangeability—Cavitrol III, WhisperTrim III, and WhisperFlo trims (figures 9, 10, and 11)are interchangeable with standard trims.
Smooth Control at High PressureDrops—Available on NPS 2 through 6 valves, balanced trim provides smooth control at highpressure drops.
High-Temperature Capability with Class VShutoff—Use of C-seal trim (see figure 6) permitsClass V shutoff up to 593C (1100F) for HPDvalves.
Sour Service Trims Available—Long-lasting,erosion- and corrosion-resistant trims are availablefor control of sour service. These trims are offeredwith either a standard cage, a Cavitrol III cage, aWhisper Trim III cage, or WhisperFlo trim.Spiral-wound gasket construction is standard.

Material Selection Guidelines
Use the following steps as a guideline for theselection of materials:
1. Determine the pressure/temperature rating of thevalve body size and material required. Inlet pressure
and temperature must always be limited by theapplicable ASME pressure/temperature rating.
2. Select the desired trim style from the AvailableConfigurations specification and from table 4,Shutoff Classifications.
3. Select desired materials from tables 7, 8, 11, and 12 and figure 13. The temperature capabilitiesdetermined from figure 13 may be further limited bythe temperature capabilities of materials selectedfrom tables 7 and 12. Refer to figure 13 to determinepressure drop limits of the valve body-trimcombinations selected.
4. Select the appropriate spiral-wound gasketmaterial. N06600 is recommended for service up to427C (800F). N07750 is recommended for serviceover 427C (800F) when improved corrosionresistance is required or when the valve is subject tosevere temperature cycling service.
InstallationThe valve must be installed so flow through thevalve is as indicated by the flow direction arrow onthe valve body. Consideration should be given toinstalling an upstream strainer, especially if the valveuses a Cavitrol III cage, Whisper Trim III, orWhisperFlo trim.
Overall dimensions are shown in figures 14, 15, and 16. Face-to-face dimensions are in compliancewith ANSI/ISA-75.08.06. Actual end connectiondimensions conform to ASME B16.25 for buttweldingends and to ASME B16.5 for flanged ends.

Trim Selection GuidelinesRefer to the following descriptions as a guideline forthe selection of appropriate trims. Trims 204, 202,and 203 should not be used in boiler feedwater dueto amine corrosion problems associated with CoCr-Aand R30006 (alloy 6).
Trim 201—Trim 201 is the standard trim forcarbon steel and alloy steel valve bodies. Trim 201A,with an S41600 (416 stainless steel) heat-treatedseat ring, is recommended for general and severeservice applications up to 427C (800F) for theNPS 1 and 2 valve size and up to 343C (650F) forthe NPS 3 through 6 valve size. Typical applicationsfor Trim 201 include services in boiler feedwater(Trim 201A only), water, non-sour hydrocarbons, andsteam. The S41600 heat-treated plug and seat ringhave a minimum hardness of 38 HRC (Rockwell C),as compared to CoCr-A with a minimum hardness of36 HRC.
Trim 204—Trim 204 should be used for sourservice or moderately corrosive service. Standardstem material, S20910 meets the metallurgicalrequirements of NACE MR0175-2002. Trim 204should not be used in boiler feedwater service ifamine problems exist.

Trim 202—Trim 202 is designed primarily foruse in all high temperature applications between427C (800F) and 566C (1050F), but can also beused between -29C (-20F) and 427C (800F).Not for boiler feedwater use if amine problems exist.Trim 202 is recommended for use in NPS 6 valvesbetween 29C (20F) and 343C (650F).Trim 202H is recommended for use in NPS 6 valvesbetween 260C (500F) and 566C (1050F).
Trim 203—Trim 203 is the standard trim forstainless steel valve body materials and should onlybe used with stainless steel valve body materials. Not for boiler feedwater use if amine problems exist.
Trim 211—Trim 211 is the standard trim forC12A valve body materials and should only be usedwith C12A valve body materials. C12A should onlybe used when the pressure and temperaturecapabilities for WC9 valve body materials are notacceptable.

C-seal Trim Description
C-seal trim is available for HPD valves with portdiameters from 2.875 inches through 5.375 inches.
With C-seal trim, a balanced valve can achievehigh-temperature, Class V shutoff. Because theC-seal plug seal is formed from metal (N07718nickel alloy) rather than an elastomer, a valveequipped with the C-seal trim can be applied inprocesses with a fluid temperature of up to 593C(1100F).
