Fish are vertebrate animals. They can be bony fish, with a bone skeleton, or

cartilagenous fish, with a skeleton made of cartilage.

CHARACTERISTICS• Fish have sensory organs

which detect vibrations

• Fish are cold-blooded and cannot regulate body temperature.

• Fish’ limbs are called fins.

• Most fish have bodies covered in scales.

VITAL FUNCTIONS & RESPIRATION

• Interaction: They have a swim bladdder to control buoyancy and move comfortably.

Nutrition: Fish can be carnivorous, omnivorous or herbivorous. They have strong jaws.

• Respiration: Fish use gills to obtain oxygen from water. Except for sharks’ and rays’, gills are protected.

• Reproduction: The releasing of fish eggs and their fertilization is called spawning. It has external fecundation.

CURIOSITIES• The world's biggest fish is a

gentle giant that is bigger than a school bus: the whale shark.

• There are small fish called Doctor Fish which are used in spas to eat dead skin.

• The “Walking Catfish” is a a fish that actually wiggles on dry land and can ‘walk’ as long as it stays moist.

• The famous puffer fish is believed to be the second most poisonous vertebrate on Earth.
