It is my hope that you will find it very helpful in your enjoyment of the sport of fishing. Some of the ingredients found in the recipes might seem unusual and/or you might not readily know how to obtain some ingredients. You may find particular information such as description or place of purchase from the Internet. Please note that although these recipes have been tested and have been found successful, they may not work all the time in all conditions. This is what makes this sport exciting. Take several baits with you on excursions including your tried and true baits you have used in the past. If you have any comments, feedback, suggestions, I would be very much interested. Please email me at [email protected] Also, I am currently writing another updated edition of Fish Bait Recipe Book. If you would like to submit “your” recipe, please email or snail mail me for inclusion in the next book. (Please go to end of book for form and other participation programs) If you would like to be notified as to when the next edition is finished, please email or snail me your name, address, and email. Thank you very much. Sincerely, Darren Takenaga, 2004 Trout Baits Bait #1 Ingredients: Oil of Anise Fresh white bread Peel off the crust of two or three pieces (portions) of white bread. Bait #5 Ingredients: 1 cup flour water .5 cups of curry powder (optional) Place flour in bowl. Add small amounts of water until firm and sticky. Roll into ball and coat with a little bit of flour. Store in airtight container. Variation: use .5 cup flour and .5 cup curry powder Bait #6 Ingredients: 1 bag miniature marshmallows .25 cup of garlic powder 1 small bowl 1 cup water 1 jar with tight lid (for bait storage) Take out about 1 cup of the marshmallows and set aside. Fill bowl with garlic powder. Put 5 marshmallows in the cup of water and make sure they are wet. After soaking, put the marshmallows in bowl of garlic and stir until coated evenly. After coated, put in jar and start process over again. Variation: you can use a packet of cheese from a box of macaroni and cheese or anise extract instead of garlic.

Bait #7 Ingredients: 1 Loaf of Sliced White Bread 1 Can Tuna in vegetable oil (6 oz.) 1 tbls garlic salt 2 tbls yellow cornmeal .25 tsp anise extract 1/8 tsp parsley fresh or dried 1 bottle of red food coloring 1 bottle of yellow food coloring 1 bottle of mineral oil ziplock bags variation: can substitute bread with Kraft Velveeta unsliced block cheese Remove and discard crust from bread. Empty entire contents of canned tuna including oil into glass or ceramic bowl. Mix bread and tuna until a dough consistency is reached. Add parsley, garlic salt, anise, and cornmeal and mix thoroughly. If mix is not moist enough, add a little mineral oil to moisten. Set aside half hour. Separate bait mix as follows. 50%, 25%, 25% and store the 50% in ziplock bag. Can be stored frozen for 6 months. The other 25% mixtures are for coloring. RED: Put a little mineral oil in ziplock bag and rub bag to coat the inside walls with the oil. Open bag and add drops of red food coloring. Add the 25% bait into bag and THOROUGHLY MIX. Add more drops as needed to obtain dark pink color. It is important that the bait is mixed throughout to get an even color. Can keep in ziplock for storage. Can be stored frozen for 6 months. Recipe #4 Ingredients: 2 oz cod liver oil 20 drops oil of anise Mix well. Use on bait. Recommended for trout. Recipe #5 .5 oz oil of rhodium .5 pint olive oil Mix well. Put 1 or 2 drops on bait. Miscellaneous Tip: Green husk juice from walnut can be used as dipping oil. Special Bonus Secret Bait This is a“natural” bait for catching trout and catfish. Believe it or not, ant eggs make great bait. The most popular ant eggs come from red or black ants. You need to find the type of ants of the bigger variety because you need at least eggs that are ¼” long so that they stay on the hook. You can put several eggs on a No. 8 or 10 baitholder hook. When fishing for trout or catfish, use a sliding sinker rig with a small marshmallow slid on the hook and up onto the

leader before baiting up. This floats the bait off the bottom a little. Use a leader of about 18 inches for trout. Catfish leader about 10 to 12 inches. Gathering the eggs. Find anthills/nests and gather up handfuls of ants, eggs, etc and put into a paper bag. (wear rubber gloves to avoid getting bitten and leave some eggs so that you can come back in the future to gather more eggs) Take an aquarium or big box or similar and place in sunlight. Cover half the box so that there is half sunlight and half shade in the bottom. Place cardboard at the bottom (shaded area) Place the ants, eggs, debris in the sun side bottom. Soon the ants will carry the eggs to the shaded side. After awhile you can take the cardboard and scoop the eggs up. You can freeze a years supply so that you don’t have to go egg hunting on every fishing trip. Important: you must place the eggs in a cardboard container for freezing because the eggs will sweat if placed in glass, plastic, or metal – thus ruining the effectiveness of the eggs. Cardboard containers that hold oatmeal suffice.
