Dear YWCA Members and Friends,

Fiscal year 2012-13 was a time to fortify the YWCA’s family violence services while strengthening our historic legacy as a women’s membership organization. As you will see in this report, good work is underway in both of these areas, and we are proud of the many staff , volunteers and friends who make our work possible every day of the year.

As we refl ect upon the work detailed in this annual report, we’d like to share with you some of the signifi cant increases we have seen in family violence services over the last seven years:

• Last year, we served 777 women and children in the crisis shelter. This represents a

55% increase over those served in fi scal year 2006-07, when we served 501, and almost

twice as many nights of service, from 21,497 to 39,341.

• Our comprehensive children’s services continue to see dramatic increases. Last year,

our compassionate team worked with 1,326 children, a 228% increase over 2006-07.

A critically important element of our recent campus expansion was to create positive,

child-centered spaces for children from infancy through 18 at the YWCA, and these

spaces are much loved and well used!

• The Salt Lake Area Family Justice Center, which opened its doors in May 2007, served

73 individuals in its fi rst two months. Last year, in its fi rst full year in its new home, the

SLAFJC served 1,264 individuals for over 5,300 visits. The Center currently has

14 community partners providing a wide array of services to women and men who seek

safety and guidance as they free themselves from abusive relationships.

• Last year, we were unable to meet 801 requests for shelter involving 1,569 adults and

children, a 67% increase over the 2011/12 fi scal year. Because the safety and security of

these individuals is our top priority, when we are full we work with area partners to fi nd

temporary space for these families to stay until we can move them into the YWCA.

While continuing to off er the state’s oldest, largest, and most comprehensive nonprofi t domestic violence services, the YWCA also envisions becoming a place “for every woman” by off ering education and leadership opportunities to women from all walks of life; by creating new initiatives and alliances that benefi t women; and by strengthening our voice for change on complex issues that aff ect Utah women and their families.

As you can see, the construction of three new buildings on the YWCA campus has not only transformed our physical space but also transformed the work we do in the community. Thank you for your belief in our work to build strong women, strong families, and strong communities.

With gratitude,

Colette Herrick Anne BurkholderPresident, Board of Directors Chief Executive Offi cer

Our shelter is available to women and children fl eeing unsafe situations 24 hours a day. In addition to basic needs, families have access to personalized advocacy, case management, individual safety planning, and domestic violence support groups. The Women in Jeopardy program served 777 women and children in the shelter with 39,341 nights of service and answered 2,076 crisis calls. We were unable to meet 801 requests for shelter involving 801 women and 768 children because we were at capacity.

Signifi cant Outcomes in the Women in Jeopardy Program:

Safety – 275/296 women (93%) created safety plans;Housing – 60 families (20%) accessed transitional housing; 54 families (18%) obtained

permanent housing upon leaving shelter and housing, which increases to 30% for families who lived in shelter for at least 3 months;

Income – 101 women (33%) obtained jobs or increased income; Health – 177 women and their families (58%) accessed health and mental health services.

Transitional housing at the YWCA is provided through two programs: the Residential Self-Suffi ciency Program, for women without dependent children, and the Kathleen Robison Huntsman Transitional Housing program, for mothers and children. Combined, these programs off er 48 housing units that provide up to two years of residential services in a supportive environment that promotes healing and independence.

Signifi cant Outcomes in the Residential Self-Suffi ciency Program:

Safety – 21/21 women (100%) created safety plans; Housing – 90% of those who exited moved on to permanent housing situations;Income – Of those who exited, 4 women (40%) increased income; 8 (80%) obtained and

maintained employment; an additional 6 (60%) increased their job skills and/or earning potential including ESL;

Education – Of those who exited, 6 women (60%) attended school, developed and made progress on chosen plans/projects;

Health – 18 women (86% of those served) accessed health and mental health care.

Camila’s Story

Eight years ago, when Camila was planning her wedding to the man she deeply loved, he hit her in a fit of

anger. Deeply contrite, he convinced her that it would never happen again, and they began their married life

together. Unfortunately, the violence soon returned, along with emotional and financial abuse. He drained their

family savings account of thousands of dollars, including Camila’s scholarship funds. Their son, Benjamin, was

born, but Camila’s husband continued his destructive behavior. During his last attack, four-year-old Benjamin

watched in horror as his father knocked his mother to the floor and then picked her up by her jaw.

Camila began attending the domestic violence survivors’ support group at the YWCA’s Salt Lake Area Family

Justice Center (SLAFJC), and decided that she must escape with Benjamin to the YWCA. She knew that her

husband would find her if she took refuge with friends or family, and she didn’t want to put them in danger.

With remarkable determination, she wasted no time creating and taking the first steps in her plan to become

independent and self-supporting. Benjamin’s recovery from their traumatic experiences was her first priority,

and she welcomed the opportunity presented by YWCA staff to enroll him in therapy at The Children’s Center.

Caring staff members at the YWCA have helped Camila get legal and financial

help to combat her husband’s continuing attempts to control and harm her. She

has obtained a protective order against her husband, and has filed for divorce and

full custody of Benjamin. Against daunting odds, Camila has continued her college

education and she will soon graduate with an associate’s degree.

Signifi cant Outcomes in the Kathleen Robison Huntsman Program:

Safety – 53/53 women (100%) created safety plans; Housing – 88% of those who exited moved on to permanent housing situations

(up from 76% in FY 11-12); Income – Of those who exited, 16 women (67%) obtained jobs or increased income;

10 (42%) obtained and maintained employment; an additional 8 (33%) increased their job skills and/or earning potential including ESL;

Education – Of those who exited, 8 women (33%) attended school, developed and made progress on chosen plans/projects;

Health – 40 women (76%) and their children accessed healthcare and mental health care.

Children in residence at the YWCA receive specialized services including advocacy, case management, safety planning, after-school and summer camp programs, as well as an evening program for teens. Drop-in child care is also available to assist women while they attend appointments and classes, and look for work.

Signifi cant Outcomes from our Children’s Programs:

Safety – 90% of surveyed school age children felt that they had learned how to keep themselves and others safe while at the YWCA, and 95% of mothers reported they have increased their knowledge and skills to prevent abuse and violence for themselves and their children since coming to the YWCA;

Education – 88% of mothers surveyed stated they feel their child’s school attendance has increased since coming to the YWCA. 42% of school aged children received onsite academic services. 88% of mothers reported strengthened parenting skills. 76% of the children agreed with the statement. “I learned how to get along better with my family;”

Health – 314 mothers received 1,233 referrals for public and private services to meet their children’s needs. Families accessed medical care through the Fourth Street Clinic, received children’s therapy through The Children’s Center, and received other services for both physical and emotional health care.

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts at the YWCA

The YWCA’s Cub Scout troop continued for its fifth year at the YWCA and this year added a Boy Scout

program. The troop served boys ages 6 to 12. The young boys residing on campus were able to participate in

weekly activities that included outdoor skill building, social skills development and learning about animals and

the earth’s natural resources. The Scouts participated in a pinewood derby and were able to attend the

Tracy Wigwam day camp during the summer.

The YWCA completed the second year of facilitating a successful Girl Scouts program on campus. The Girl

Scouts of Utah ran a ten-week course developed to support healthy life skills and focused on building healthy

self-esteem, and troop members sold cookies, earned badges, attended camps and had the opportunity to

apply for scholarships.

From Salt Lake Area Family Justice Center visitors:

“[The Center] was very helpful . . . they just listened and helped me decide what to do and

what my options were. I had no idea how to go about starting any process and they

guided me through it with extreme kindness and understanding.”

“I felt listened to. I thought that they were going to judge me but they seemed like they

understood what it was like to be in my position. They helped me in all senses.”

“Knowing I might get my life back, that there is hope for me.”

“Knowing that there are people who can help me get away from this fear that I have.”

This year’s annual membership meeting and related special events featured a visit from the new YWCA USA CEO, Dr. Dara Richardson-Heron. It was the fi rst Utah visit from a national CEO in at least 15 years. In her remarks to YWCA members, Dr. Richardson-Heron outlined bold new priorities for the YWCA USA and saluted the strength of local associations, including our YWCA.

Mary Willis Critchlow is often referred to as the founding mother of the YWCA Utah. This society is a group of diverse, interesting and welcoming women who are committed to the YWCA’s mission and who want to explore the issues the YWCA addresses in our state, while providing sustaining funds to support this work. The Critchlow Society met ten times in FY12-13 for learning luncheons and service projects.

“Half of Utahns are women, yet not one holds a seat in Congress or in state-wide elected offi ce.”

– The Salt Lake Tribune.

The Real Women Run collaborative nonpartisan initiative began in 2011 at the YWCA with the University of Utah’s Hinckley Institute of Politics and other partner organizations and individuals. The purpose is to empower women to fully participate in public life and leadership through elected political offi ce at all levels, appointments to public boards and commissions, working on campaigns, and learning more about our political system. In its second year, Real Women Run held a networking social and two training sessions. Over 150 women participated.

The YWCA Young Women’s Council hosted a successful annual event, the half-day Young Women’s Leadership Summit. This year’s Summit was attended by 75 young women aged 18-35 and featured keynote speakers Jacki Zehner, CEO of Women Moving Millions, and Shannon Farley, Executive Director of Spark.

The national YWCA’s Stand Against Racism initiative is aimed at raising awareness that racism still exists in our communities and that it can no longer be ignored or tolerated. The goal of Stand Against Racism is to unite as one community in order to celebrate diversity, raise awareness that racism and injustice still exist, and challenge the voices of those who promote hate. The YWCA Utah participated in this event with internal dialogue and a team-building activity, while companies and other community organizations were also encouraged to participate with their programming of choice.

The YWCA held two events, including a full day seminar, featuring PEACEABILITIES©, a program developed by BYU professors Dr. Bonnie Ballif-Spanvill and Claudia J. Clayton. It was designed to help reduce violence among children and teach skills that facilitate peaceful interactions. The seminar was attended by 75 community members, teachers, librarians and YWCA staff and taught methods for developing peaceful behaviors in children by using stories and activities from ancient and modern cultures.

18th annual YWCA Week Without Violence campaign featured a series of events to provoke thoughtful discussion, education and remembrance of those whose lives are aff ected by violence. The Honorable David Litvack, Utah House of Representatives, was recognized as the YWCA Public Offi cal of the Year for his eff orts to strengthen the safety, health and well-being of Utah women and children.

Providing an aff ordable and diverse learning environment for community children, the nationally accredited Lolie Eccles Early Education Center cares for and educates children from six weeks to fi ve years old. This year, the Center added a three-year-old preschool classroom, increasing the Center’s enrollment by sixteen. Community partners are an important part of the Center’s programming; regular visitors include the Salt Lake City Library, Heart and Soul Art Therapy, and private yoga and Spanish instructors.

A Special Thank You to Our Volunteers!

Volunteers are at the heart of what we do and are found in almost every corner of the YWCA campus. Last year, 117 volunteers provided almost 20,000 hours to YWCA programs on an ongoing basis. Additionally, groups and one-time volunteers provided 3,500 hours of service. Combined, YWCA volunteers worked the equivalent of eleven full-time employees. We give a heartfelt thank you to the hundreds of people who donate their time and talents to the YWCA each year. We couldn’t do it without you!
