FIRST YEAR STUDENTS: The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health Duluth welcomes you to participate in one of the following elective courses in 2012-2013. all of the courses offer you a dynamic experience. OB LONGITUDINAL COURSE (FMed 6987) The OB Longitudinal course offers medical students the wonderful opportunity of following a pregnant mother and her family through prenatal visits; labor & delivery, postpartum and newborn care with her family physician or OB specialist. Small group discussions are required covering prenatal & postpartum care, labor & delivery, and newborn care. The time commitment is approximately 20 hrs. Course begins October 2012. Goal: To encourage medical students to maintain an interest in obstetrics that will continue into their medical career. Dr. Emily Onello, Course Director & Assistant Professor Dr. Jen Pearson, Adjunct Assistant Professor Sue McLeod, Course Coordinator RURAL ACADEMY OF LEADERSHIP (RAL) COURSE (FMed 6997) The Rural Academy of Leadership course offers students the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills for their future role as active community members and rural family physicians through leadership training activities and mentor partnerships with community leaders and Department of Family Medicine and Community Health Duluth faculty. Goal: To encourage rural physician leadership through longitudinal community service projects with community and faculty mentors, didactic leadership sessions and clinical care of the underserved by volunteering at the HOPE Clinic. In order to volunteer at the HOPE Clinic, you must be enrolled in the Rural Academy of Leadership Course. The time commitment for this course is approximately 40 hours over both 1st & 2 nd years. Course begins September 2012. The course consists of 10 in-class sessions, combining lecture and small group activities, in which students will explore key topics in Global Health.
