Executive Summary

The objective of the exploration program is to identify additional economically minable magnetic

taconite deposits since the demand for iron ore products are increasing. Toward this objective,

geological mapping, magnetic surveys and rock sampling has taken place over these claim

blocks between 2003 and 2010. During 2011 more detailed sampling and mapping was carried

out to connect the ground to areas drilled during that time.

From June 9 to October 1 the geological study of the blocks was carried out by Senior

Geologist, Henry Simpson, Junior Geologists Bocar Diagana and Alexander Howe, Student

Geologists, Chris Lister, William (Billy) Clarke, Brad Coombs and Monica Barrington of

Memorial University in St. John’s, Local Field Assistant, Richard Sandy, Job Nattawappio,

Peshu Gauthier, Joseph Peastitute, George Rock, Kabimbetas Mokoush and Joseph

Mameanskum and Field Project Manager Donna O’Quinn and assistant Jessie Zinn.

Note: All the Iron Formation surface samples were tested and analyzed at the Midland

Research Center (MRC), Nashwauk, Minnesota, USA.

These samples were tested for its magnetite content using the Davis Tube (DT) method. The

weight percentage of the concentrate obtained is known as the Davis Tube Weight Recovery

(DTWR%). The concentrate is assayed for Fe%, SiO2% and other elements. If there is very little

magnetite present in the sample, the concentrate produced by the DT method will be very low or

none. In such instances there may not be enough material to analyse for Fe, SiO2 and other

elements. In such cases the word “short” were used in all the analysis Tables.

1.0 Introduction

During the summer of 2011 New Millennium Iron Corp. (NML) personnel carried out an

exploration program to cover the magnetic taconite potential of claim blocks north and south of

the LabMag Deposit along the Millennium Iron Range and in the area around Wishart Creek

taconite occurrences.

The exploration study started on June 9 and was concluded until October 01, 2011. NML

personnel who worked on this project were, Senior Geologist, Henry Simpson, Junior

Geologists Bocar Diagana and Alexander Howe, Student Geologists, Chris Lister, William (Billy)

Clarke, Brad Coombs and Monica Barrington of Memorial University in St. John’s, Local Field

Assistant, Richard Sandy, Job Nattawappio, Peshu Gauthier, Joseph Peastitute, George Rock,

Kabimbetas Mokoush and Joseph Mameanskum and Field Project Manager Donna O’Quinn

and assistant Jessie Zinn.

2.0 Topography and Access

Exploration areas were accessed by float plane, helicopter and by boat from the Menihek Hydro

Dam. The central part of the area was reached by road from Schefferville through the LabMag

property. The Wishart area is along the sides of the road from Schefferville to the Menihek Dam.

The work was made possible by truck and mostly by helicopter from Schefferville.

The western side of the Howells River area is covered by a series of swamps along the shore

and then rising gently to the west with small north-south trending lakes bordering the iron

formation. Further to the west, the area rises to a hill over 300 m higher and extending to the

west of the licence block.

The area is dominated by elevation tundra with rare stunted black spruce which increases in

number and size as one goes from west to east. The dominant ground cover is caribou moss

with blue berries and shrubs.

3.0 Geology

The exploration area is located at the extreme western margin of the Labrador Trough (Trough)

adjacent to the Archean basement gneisses. The Trough is comprised of a sequence of

Proterozoic sedimentary rocks, including iron formation, volcanic rocks and mafic intrusions

known as the Kaniapiskau Supergroup. This sequence lies unconformably over the Archean

granitic gneisses (Ashuanipi Complex). In the western part of the Trough, the Knob Lake Group

forms part of the Kaniapiskau Supergroup. The principal iron formation unit, the Sokoman

Formation, is part of the Knob Lake group and forms a continuous sequence. The stratigraphy

of the Knob Lake Group is given below.

3.1 Attikamagen Formation (300 m +)

This formation is a green, red, grey and black shale and argillite interbedded with mafic volcanic

rocks. These rocks are exposed only in the DSO areas.

Page 8: First Year Assessment Report - Newfoundland and …gis.geosurv.gov.nl.ca/geofilePDFS/Batch2017/LAB_1688.pdfFifth Year Assessment Report for Magnetic Taconite Blocks Licence 013733M

3.2 Denault Formation (60 m – 120 m)

This formation is comprised of dolomite with chert bands and pebbles of black chert. It is seen

only in the DSO areas and not observed near the iron ore zones.

3.3 Wishart Formation (10 m – 75 m)

This formation is a quartzite, sometimes felspathic with bands of arkose, greywacke, slate and

mafic volcanic rocks. This formation is well exposed all along the western edge of Howells River

taconite belt and on the hanging wall side of open pit mines of DSO.

3.4 Ruth Formation (5 m – 35 m)

This is a thin bedded to laminated chert carbonate shaley formation and is often black in color

with some pyrite. This has been included by some into the Sokoman formation. This unit on

leaching and enrichment forms high grade red DSO.

3.5 Sokoman Formation (120 m – 150 m)

This formation comprises the major iron bearing units and is subdivided into three members,

Lower Iron Formation (LIF), Middle Iron Formation (MIF) and Upper Iron Formation (UIF). These

members are further sub divided into several sub-members, as given below:

Table 1: Sokoman Formation

All these units are exposed as outcrops in the Howells River taconite areas as well as in the

Wishart Creek taconite zone. In the DSO areas, these units are recognizable in leached and

enriched conditions in trenches and test pits.

The Sokoman Iron Formation under leached and enriched state produces Blue, Yellow and Red

ore. The leaching of silica, carbonates, silicates and the introduction of secondary iron oxides

produces the ore. Under these conditions all the magnetite present in the protore is converted to

martite (hematite). The Blue ore is derived mostly from UIF and MIF members, where the units

UIF Member: Lean Chert (“LC”) Green, grey-green and pink-grey

Jasper Upper Iron Formation (“JUIF”)

Layered to laminated, hematite magnetite-chert iron formation

Green Chert (“GC”) Silicate-rich green chert unit

MIF Member: Upper Red Cherty (“URC”) Massive to layered, jasper-magnetite, hematite–chert formation

Pink-Grey Cherty (“PGC”) Disseminated magnetite-chert iron formation

Lower Red Cherty (“LRC”) Layered magnetite-chert iron formation

LIF Member Lower Red Green Cherty (“LRGC”)

Layered silicate-magnetite-carbonate, magnetite-chert iron formation

are rich in metallic oxides. Yellow Ore is derived from silicate- carbonate-oxide units of the LIF

member. The LIF member is termed as Silicate-Carbonate Iron Formation (SCIF) in the DSO

areas. The iron silicates and iron rich carbonates on leaching altered to limonite and goethite

producing Yellow Ore. Red Ore is the product of leaching of the Ruth formation producing

earthy, fine grained red hematite and goethite mixed with a little alumino-silicates (clay)

3.6 Menihek Formation (300 m +)

This formation is a dark grey to black shale with minor interbedded greywacke and carbonate

lithofacies. It is a carbonaceous, graphitic and pyrite baring shale.

4.0 Method of Work

The 2011 field work was carried out from Schefferville by pick-up trucks and by A-3 helicopters

supplied by Heli Nation and Heli Boreal. The crews consisted of two geologists and two local

prospecting trainees. Sampling was carried out in all the geological units of the Sokoman

Formation where ever possible. The basement gneissic occurrences to the northwest of

LabMag deposit were examined for the presence of gossans and rusty areas indicating sulfide

mineralization and possible associated gold mineralization.

The outcrop and sampling locations were located with handheld Garmin GPS units. The data

gathered in the field such as geological contacts, structural measurements and sample locations

were plotted in the field and then transferred to ArcMap 9 ESRI by UTM (Nad 83).

A ground archaeological investigation of all the proposed drill sites on licences 015976M,

013782M and 011277M were carried out by Arkeos Inc. The report is appended.

5.0 Areas Investigated

5.1 Howells Lake (015976M)

One hole, 11HR1281D, was drilled in this licence to check the continuity of the taconite

formation between LabMag and KéMag deposits (Figure 2). The hole reached a depth of 147 m

and ended in waste LIF formation. The details of the drill hole are given in Table 2. The core

samples were assayed at MRC laboratory and the results are given in Table 3.

Mapping of the smaller licence blocks on the west and east was done by using helicopter during

the summer and fall of 2011. On the east side only outcrops of Menihek shale were noted on

blocks 018651M and 018653M. The mapping on licences 013743M and 018652M revealed only

the basement gneisses. The outcrops examined are fresh and devoid of rusty weathered zones

indicating the absence of significant concentrations of sulfides.

5.3 North End of Menihek Lake (014951M, 018654M & 018655M)

The field traverses and mapping were carried out from Schefferville by using helicopter. The

licences 018654M & 018655M were examined from the air for outcrop locations on islands and

along the shoreline of the Menihek Lake.

Two days were spent on mapping these licence blocks. One day was spent mapping the

outcrops along the trend of the diabase dyke (Map 2, Geology of the south-central Labrador

Trough, R. J. Wardle, 1982). In the 1951 report, P. Mauffette mentions an increase in magnetite

content in the dyke from south to north. This has not been noticed along this dyke at Wishart

Creek Taconite area or in a similar dyke occurring on the LabMag Deposit.

Three lines were traversed across the strike from Menihek Lake to the Wishart Formation in the

northern half of the block. Only outcrops of Lean Chert (LC) were noted in the field. A total of 5

samples were collected along the course of the traverses in licence 014951M. The results are

given in Table 6. Certificate of analysis are provided in Appendix B.

5.4 West of Menihek Dam (014952M & 018656M)

At the south end of block 014952M and on block 018656M a traverse along the east shore of

Menihek Lake was made. The mapping shows that the east shore is a beach consisting of well-

sorted sand, cobble and boulders. Further inland the area is under overburden (possibly esker)

consisting of sand and boulders of assorted lithology. The lithology of the boulders ranged from

shale and iron formation to garnet bearing granodiorite gneiss. The beach sands are generally

quartz rich with some sections with abundant garnet. The overburden consists of sand and

boulders and covers the entire mapped area. No outcrop of any iron formation was found during

this mapping.

The coastal terrain in the north section of 014952M was similar to that in the south. Beaches

consisted mostly of white sand with some sections being dominated by boulders of various

lithologies. No garnet zones were mapped on these beaches. To the north of 014952M one

outcrop of Achaean Basement was mapped along the shore north of the block.

The inland areas of the north section of the block were swamp and caribou moss with scattered

boulders comprised of Sokoman and non-Sokoman lithologies. No outcrop was mapped on the

inland traverse and the overburden consists of sand and boulders.

5.5 South of Menihek Lake (014954M)

During 2009 the Geological Survey of Canada conducted an airborne magnetic and radiometric

survey over Labrador under the GEM program. This survey covered the entire licence

014954M. The magnetic anomalies occurring in this area show a discontinuous pattern

compared to the other areas covered by the survey. This may be due to the presence of several

cross faults and may also be due to the oxidation of magnetite to martite along these zones.

Iron Formation mapping in 2011 concentrated on this airborne magnetic anomaly above the

Wishart quartzite contact. Mapping traverses between Sara and Lou Lakes revealed no

outcrops. The area covered is topographically lower, and therefore very wet, with much alder

cover.

From Lou Lake north, the quartzite iron formation contact is under the esker and continues to

the middle of Richard Lake. At the north end of Richard Lake there are a few outcrops of cherty

metallic iron formation along the shore of Garth Bay. This zone is narrow and dips at shallower

angles towards east. The structural setting is similar to the LabMag Deposit but the Middle and

Lower Iron formations seem to be confined to a narrow zone which appears to be less than 25

m thick stratigraphically.

Several outcrops of cherty metallic iron formation were mapped along the east shore of Sara

Lake following the magnetic anomaly which continues along the east side of Vail Lake. No

outcrops were mapped along the Vail Lake shore in 2008.

At the southwest end of Vail Lake in 2010 an area of metallic iron formation was sampled. A

crew spent one day mapping and sampling in this area. Further south one traverse was made

across the section north of Jerome Creek. No major outcrops were located but some Lean

Chert Member outcrops were mapped and sampled. The magnetite content appears to be low.

The areas showing strong magnetic anomalies at the northeast end of the licence and west of

Sara Lake have significant outcrop exposures of LC. Samples collected during the previous

programs show poor Davis Tube Recovery results.

The magnetic anomaly area along the eastern side of the north end of the licence was mapped

but no outcrops were found. The ground is low, overburden covered and swampy in places.

A rusty zone in the basement gneiss at the northeast end of the licence was sampled and sent

to SGS Lakefield for fire assay to determine the gold content. The results of all the samples

collected are given in Table 7.

Future work in this area must include soil geochemical sampling, ground geophysics and test

drilling.

5.6 Wishart Creek (010478M, 011311M & 013733M)

Mostly sampling work was carried out on licences 010478M, 013733M and 011311M during the

field season of 2011.

On licence 013733M 12 samples on a line across a strike were collected in the center of the

Wishart Creek taconite occurrence.

Sampling on licence 010478M was concentrated on the iron formation band east of Gillings

Lake. This band has good iron content but the Davis Tube recovery is low for most of the

samples. Obviously the iron oxide present is mostly hematite.

A helicopter was used to map and collect samples at the south end of the licence 011311M

between the southeast arm of Gillings Lake and the Gilling River. Access to this area by ground

is very difficult.

On block 011311M drilling of 3 holes was planned. However, because of delays in getting the

permit, no drilling was done in 2011. The surface sample results are given in Table 8.

5.7 Timmins South (018114M)

This licence is located west of the mined out IOCC Fleming 3 Deposit. The 2010 airborne

gravity-magnetic survey revealed a gravity high anomaly with a low magnetic signature along

the NL-QC provincial boundary. Reconnaissance traverses revealed no outcrops. The soil

covering the area is red indicating deep weathering. This area needs to be explored for DSO

type of deposits.

6.0 Conclusions and Recommendations

It is recommended that in areas of Howells Lake and Perrault Lake drilling should continue as

planned for in the 2011 field season. The licences in the Menihek Lake area require further

ground mapping followed by an exploratory drilling program to evaluate the magnetic taconite

potential. Much of the ground in the Menihek Lake area is covered by thick overburden with few

outcrops. The few IF outcrops examined show evidences of leaching and weathering. The

surface sample results indicate that oxidation of magnetite is widespread near surface,

however, present airborne magnetic anomalies indicate that the oxidation of magnetite does not

extend deeper. Exploratory drilling is required to fully evaluate the taconite potential.
