Baptism has been a frequent topic lately. On January 8, I preached about Jesus’ baptism from Matthew 3. We talked about the importance of baptism and took an overview of a United Methodist understanding of baptism. It sparked several questions from parents and children. I have really enjoyed sharing about baptism with parents considering having their infant baptized and helping children understand how their infant baptism was a God act that is still valid today. Baptism is a central topic of our current confirmation class with 6 th and some 7 th graders in the church. We had an in-depth conversation on what baptism is and had them talk with their parents about their baptism (if they had been baptized) and look at pictures and their baptism certificate. If they had not been baptized, I asked them to share with their parents what baptism is. Furthermore, each confirmation has a mentor and the mentor was encouraged to share with the confirmand about their own baptism. One of the mentors brought me their baptism certificate from the 1950’s! With all this discussion on baptism, I decided to do a little research on my own baptism. My mother amazingly found my certificate (see below) and sent some pictures too. I shared on January 8 th that I struggled with not remembering my own baptism. But, just because I don’t remember my baptism does not mean it did not happen or loses its significance. (Just because we do not remember our birth does not mean it did not happen or lose its significance.) As baptized children of God, we are called to live out of this covenant relationship of faith in all we do. As a church, we have specifically pledged to do this through leading others to Christ, learning to be disciples, and lov- ing through service. I encourage you to find your own certificate and pictures and maybe even talk with someone who could help you remember your baptism. If you find either of them, send me a copy or drop them by the church office ([email protected]). If you are still considering or have questions about baptism, let’s talk! I hope baptism is always a frequent topic of discussion and seen in the lives we live and the ministry we share. Following Christ with you, Wade

REMEMBER YOUR BAPTISM? Baptism has been a frequent topic lately. On January 8, I preached about Jesus’ baptism from Matthew 3. We talked about the importance of baptism and took an overview of a United Methodist understanding of baptism. It sparked several questions from parents and children. I have really enjoyed sharing about baptism with parents considering having their infant baptized and helping children understand how their infant baptism was a God act that is still valid today. Baptism is a central topic of our current confirmation class with 6th and some 7th graders in the church. I shared on January 8th that I struggled with not remembering my own baptism. But, just because I don’t remember my baptism does not mean it did not happen or loses its significance. (Just because we do not remember our birth does not mean it did not happen or lose its significance.) As baptized children of God, we are called to live out of this covenant relationship of faith in all we do. As a church, we have specifically pledged to do this through leading others to Christ, learning to be disciples, and lov-ing through service.

THE BATTLE PLAN FOR PRAYER

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16b

Are you ready to take your prayer life to the next level? Do you want to experience

the joy of answered prayer on a regular basis? This Bible study is designed to help

believers become more devoted to prayer and to faithfully and effectively wield the

weapon of prayer in the battles and seasons of life.

The Battle Plan for Prayer, inspired by the movie The War Room, is an 8-week

scriptural study and will begin with an introductory session Sunday,

February 12th. Lessons start February 26th. Classes will meet Sunday mornings

from 9:45-10:30 a.m. in the Enjoy classroom on the third floor of the Education

Building. Please sign up by calling the church office at 476-9694 or just come on February 12th.

The study will be facilitated by Tommy & Denise McDow and books may be ordered from your

favorite book distributor or download them to your tablet or e-reader.

CHILDREN’S PLAY DAY

The youth did an awesome job leading the children’s play day in the Christian Life

Center on January 16th. The children ran, hula-hooped, threw Frisbees, did 3-legged

races, played basketball, corn hole and made it through an obstacle course! They also

played disk golf, dodgeball and ate cupcakes without using their hands. The 22

children who came received the benefit of Andrew’s 9 youth who planned and

coached all of the games. Thank you to everyone who participated and volunteered.

It was truly a blessing!

CHILDREN’S MOVIE NIGHT

Children will have a movie night, Friday,

February 10th at 6:00 p.m. in the Christian

SHARE THE WARMTH COAT CLOSET

The Share the Warmth Coat Closet has been blessed with so many coats, mittens and toboggans this season. With the recent inclement weather, your gifts have blessed 250 individuals with a

coat (128 children and 122 adults). Thank you to the volunteers who organize and assist with this ‘boutique’ and thank you for each and every donated coat, mitten and toboggan.

(Donations are accepted Monday through Friday for this ministry.)

2017 has been very wet and cold especially for the households who are ‘housing insecure’. One household this week stated they had stayed outside – the children were ages 5, 3 and 1. FUMC placed the family in the Budget for a couple of nights and then learned the household had been approved for public housing. The family should have moved in on Friday, January 20. All of the volunteers involved with this household are doing a happy dance in praise for this. Among the Samaritan volunteers and workers, we have discussed the children who live in the Budget and other local motels on a routine basis. Did you know a school bus picks up and delivers children at the Budget daily? School bus pickups are at other local motels, too. It is heartbreaking. Would you be willing to pray for these children every time you pass a local motel? Please join this prayer commitment requesting protection for the children, more stable housing, their educations and so much more. For a point of reference, FUMC has helped 10 children along with their parents with Budget lodging since 1/1/2017. So thankful Tipton County schools have these children in their programs. When the children are in school, they are safe, warm, fed, loved, educated and so much more. It is the best hours of their day. Thank you to the school educators, support staff, administration, and others. Thank you for your continued gifts to the Samaritan Fund and the Bread of Life ministries. Your gifts make a difference to so many.
