People, look east. The time is near of the crowning of the year. Make your house fair as you are able, trim the hearth and set the table.

Litany from Psalm 43 *

O God, deliver me from those who are deceitful and unjust, for you are the God in whom I take refuge.

Send out your light and your truth. Let them lead me. Let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling. Then I will go to the altar of God, to God who is my exceeding joy.

Send out your light and your truth. Let them lead me. I will praise you with music, O God, my God.

Send out your light and your truth. Let them lead me. Why are you so cast down, O my soul? Hope in God.

Send out your light and your truth. Let them lead me.

Chorus This Little Light of Mine Traditional

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine, This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine, This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine, Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Spoken Call to Worship (10:30am)

I was glad when they said to me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.

In anticipation of the coming of Christ, let us make this place even more beautiful with candles, wreaths, ornaments and symbols.

In anticipation of the coming of Christ, let us bring into this room the rich, red color of the poinsettia plant, to remind us throughout these weeks of the sacrifice of Christ.

In acts of hanging greens and listening to the words of prophets and seers let us make our hearts and this space a place of inward and outward preparation for the One who comes to give us second birth.

Merciful God, you sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation. Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may celebrate aright the commemoration of the nativity, and may await with joy the coming in glory of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn UMH 206 Houston I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light (verse 1 only)

Children come forward and hang Chrismons on the tree during this verse.

Blessing and Lighting of the Chrismon Tree

Holy Lord, we come with joy to celebrate the birth of your Son, who

rescued us from the darkness of sin by making the cross a tree of life and

light. May this tree, arrayed in splendor, remind us of the life-giving

cross of Christ, that we may always rejoice in the new life that shines in

our hearts. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Children’s Moment (10:30am) Misty Graham-Stapleton

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Worship of God by Giving Tithes and Offerings

The Advent Wreath

During Advent, we wait for the one promised in scripture. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor. We wait for the one who will bring answers to a world filled with questions. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor. We wait for the one who can heal what has been wounded and mend what has been broken. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor. We wait for the one who can renew our weary spirits and ignite our hearts with hope. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor.
