May 2018THE SPIREPastor’s Thoughts

It’s Not All About MeThe month of April this year will go down as one of my least favorite Aprils.

Mainly because, the weather simply stunk! I’ve been so disappointed (and maybe

even a little grumpy) because what I really wanted is sunshine and warmth, and

what I got was gray and dreary and cold. It reminds me of a few Decembers when

I made my annual winter trips to the beach, including this last one for our mission

trip. It was supposed to be sunshine and warmth then too, but it was cold and rainy.

I didn’t like it then and I don’t like it now.

But some Scripture I was reading today reminds me that it’s not all about me. Romans 12:5 says,

“so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another.” What I

think stinks, might smell like a rose to someone else. So I could be happy for those who love this cooler

weather, rather than gripe about how much I don’t love it. I’ll work on that.

The truth is, we probably all need to work on that. We all need to be reminded from time to time

that it’s not all about us, individually. It’s about being members one of another. When you are disappointed

that your favorite song, or even your preferred style of music, is absent in worship, someone else is lifted up

and blessed by a song or style of music. When the message doesn’t say anything to you, it speaks volumes

to someone else. When the temperature is too hot or cold for you, it is just right for someone else. When

the noise of toddlers and youth is getting on your nerves, it is soothing the nerves of someone else.

Many people allow what they don’t like to keep them from enjoying church, or even from coming

to church. Obviously, I’m going to keep coming to church. But when I am experiencing something I don’t

really enjoy, I’m going to work on reminding myself that it’s not all about me.

Will you work on that with me? It’s not all about me. It’s not all about you. Because individually, we

are members one of another.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Marvin

Spreading the J A M....We have finished up our Super Hero Traits Challenges. It was great fun. I hope you had a moment to see

the pictures that were posted on our JAM Facebook page. We will spend the last weeks on review and

games. Last JAM for the year will be May 9th .

Everything we do requires dedicated volunteers. A special thanks to each of them, for giving their time

and talents with the group. It would not be possible without you.

I have had a chance to look at some of the material for

Vacation Bible School that will be from July 16-20. The theme

will be “Shipwrecked - Rescued by Jesus.” Sign up on the

prattumc.org website. Lynda Arnett will be our director.

Again, thanks for a great year, Sherri Ewertt

Graduation SundayScholarship Offering Sunday

May 20, 2018

On Graduation Sunday, May 20, the Pratt United Methodist Church family will be asked to contribute to a special Scholarship Offering to help fund scholarships for our college youth and graduating high school seniors. The money collected from this special offering, plus funds from designated gifts, provide the funds the Scholarship Committee can allocate to student scholarships for the entire year. Please write “Scholarships” in the memo of your check.

These scholarships will be for the fall and spring semesters of 2018-2019 school year. This is a way of rewarding the fine students who have been active in our church. If you cannot be in attendance May 20, please leave your offering in the church office or mail it to the church at Box 316, Pratt, KS 67124.

Pratt United Methodist Church’s graduating high school seniors and those youth from our church already attending college may apply for these scholarships. For both the fall 2017 and the spring 2018 semesters, Brady McComb, Nathan Houdyshell, Austin Black, and Kendall Davidson were awarded $1,000 scholarships for each semester. In addition to the Church Scholarship, Nathan Houdyshell was selected to receive the annual McCaslin Family Scholarship in the amount of $250.

Thank you for your generosity in helping our college students, The Scholarship Committee

Jonah, Navigating A Life Interrupted by Priscilla Shirer

They shock us; they shake us; they compel us to change. You can’t escape life’s interruptions, but you can change your perspective on them. Diving into the study of Jonah we will discover that what you see as an interruption may truly be God’s divine invitation to a life so much bigger than you can imagine.

May 2017THE SPIREUMW

Christmas Eve

Candlelight Services

United Methodist WomenSpring has officially arrived according to the calendar, but the weather has not felt like it is spring. The

coming days will warm up and we will begin to see the creative side of God’s artistry. A Kansas sunset has

the most amazing colors, and no matter how hard an artist tries, they fall short of recreating the beauty that

God has made. We know that God created many things. The very first verse in the bible states that “God

created the heavens and earth”, again in Genesis it is told that “God created mankind in his own image”.

Each of us have created something that has enriched the lives of the ones we love. Maybe your talents are

cooking, playing an instrument, building things, or simply just creating a life. God intended for us to ex-

press ourselves in creative ways and to always give the glory for all things created to Him.

We should challenge ourselves to use the talents that God has given to us. Step outside of our comfort

zones and share God’s talent with a stranger, a child, an elderly person, or even with that grumpy person in

line at the supermarket. God created us in His image, He will make sure your creative narrative will be just

right!
