Sermon Corner This week we begin a Sermon Series titled New
Believers. Every now and then we need to return
to the basics of our faith. Whether we are new
believers or mature believers, a firm grasp of the
basics is important. In this series we will look at what new believers
look for and see in the church family.
This Week’s Message:
New Believers- Temptation Still Strikes
One thing we find out quickly as new believers, is that
temptation still strikes. The old has gone and the new has come,
but the old hasn’t gone very far.
Scripture: Luke 8:1-15
Next Week’s Message:
New Believers- Hypocrisy Impacts All
One thing we find out, when we begin our walk with Jesus, is
that hypocrisy is alive and well. As mature Christians we should
realize that hypocrisy impacts us all.
Scripture: Galatians 2:11-14; Philippians 3:12-14

A Great time was had by all as 5,000 youth, young adults and leaders gathered for ROCK 2017 in
Ocean City, MD this past weekend. The purpose of this event is for our Youth to meet Jesus for the first time, or to meet him again. At the heart of ROCK was the message (delivered by Preston
Centuolo) that God can change your life!
“Truly God is my rock and my salvation, God is my fortress, I will never be shaken”- Psalm 62:2

Announcing a New Bible Study!!!
We will have an open Bible study where we will discuss biblical concepts that are confusing to participants. Each person will research the question or questions during the week, and we will discuss the new information the following Sunday. We will discuss a topic until we decide to move to something else. This is highly informal and just a simple attempt to come closer to understanding God’s truth. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall on Sundays from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., starting February 12. For more information, contact Richard Reynnells. All are welcome.

The Poe Endowment
As 2017 begins, the Poe Endowment Committee would like to thank First Church members and friends for their
support in the transitioning of the Margaret Poe Parlor to the Poe Chapel. All this has been for the glory of our God.
In 2016, the Poe Endowment was able to present a donation to one of the six categories described in the Poe
Endowment Charter. The music department was the recipient of $400 for the construction of a new cabinet to store
music.
The categories that are candidates for annually receiving similar awards are:
✝Trustees (Maintenance of the Poe Chapel)
✝Youth Programs
✝Education Committee (Sunday School Programs)
✝Music Program
✝Memorial Committee (Historical Elements)
✝Missions Projects
The Poe Endowment Committee is now accepting requests for 2017. The committee will be presenting awards in
$500 increments. These requests need to be submitted in writing to the Poe Endowment Committee
by February 20, 2017. Once these requests are received, the committee will select and notify the recipient of the
award.
The amount of money available for awards is based on the Fund's assets and the requests being presented. Anyone
who would like to make a contribution can do so by making a donation to FUMCL, attn. Memorials/ Poe
Endowment Fund.
There is more information about the Poe Chapel and the Poe Endowment Fund on our church
website. http://fumcl.org/worship/the-poe-chapel/
If you haven't seen the newest addition to the Chapel, be sure to stop by. Miss Gertrude Poe had a framed version of
Psalm 23 installed next to the stained glass Shepherd's Window.
Any questions regarding the Poe Endowment can be addressed to the following committee members: Vicci
Rodgers, Pat Elliott, Wayne Becraft, Jim Ryan or Jim Welsh.

First United Methodist Church of Laurel
Celebrates
Red Dress Sunday
February 12, 2017
Red Dress Sunday is an innovative faith-based health education and outreach program designed to raise awareness of the devastating effects of heart disease. Statistics show that each year more African-American women die from heart disease than breast
cancer, stroke and lung cancer combined, making it the number one killer of African-American and Latina women in this country.
We invite our congregation to wear red as a powerful visual and reminder to take care of their hearts on Sunday, February 12th.
Our Hearts are not only important spiritually, but physically as well!
