“QUERIDA AMAZONIA”: NOT QUITE THE EXPECTED REVOLUTION

The official response of Pope Francis to the October gathering of selected prelates, clergy, religious and lay people at the Vatican to discuss the challenge of protecting the Amazon region and bringing the gos-pel to its inhabitants was released to the public on February 12. On the part of some there had been trepida-tion, and on the part of others hope, that the Holy Father would approve three revolutionary recommendations of the synod fathers: female deacons, married priests, and an Amazonian rite. Without naming them directly, the Holy Father rejected these revolutionary changes for the Church in the Amazon, and potentially the Church universal, in his Post-Synodal Exhortation “Querida Amazonia.”

Pope Francis expresses his esteem for what women have done to advance the faith: “In the Amazon region, there are communities that have long preserved and handed on the faith even though no priest has come their way, even for decades. This could happen because of the presence of strong and generous wom-en who, undoubtedly called and prompted by the Holy Spirit, baptized, catechized, prayed and acted as mis-sionaries. For centuries, women have kept the Church alive in those places through their remarkable devotion and deep faith. Some of them, speaking at the Synod, moved us profoundly by their testimony. This summons us to broaden our vision, lest we restrict our understanding of the Church to her functional structures. Such a reductionism would lead us to believe that women would be granted a greater status and participation in the Church only if they were admitted to Holy Orders. But that approach would in fact narrow our vision; it would lead us to clericalize women, diminish the great value of what they have already accomplished, and subtly make their indispensable contribution less effective.”

Pope Francis expresses a hope for more permanent deacons in Amazonia and, in a footnote, laments the number of priests who have left the region to minister in Europe and North America (apparently the living is better there!). The Holy Father calls for a strengthening of lay ministry without introducing them to what per-tains only to priestly ministry: “The pastoral presence of the Church in the Amazon region is uneven, due in part to the vast expanse of the territory, its many remote places, its broad cultural diversity, its grave social problems, and the preference of some peoples to live in isolation. We cannot remain unconcerned; a specific and courageous response is required of the Church... This is why it is important to determine what is most specific to a priest, what cannot be delegated...the exclusive character received in Holy Orders qualifies the priest alone to preside at the Eucharist. That is his particular, principal and non-delegable function.” The Holy Father alludes to the celibate priesthood when he writes that “Jesus Christ appears as the Spouse of the com-munity that celebrates the Eucharist through the figure of a man who presides as a sign of the one Priest.” The implication is that the priest, who is persona Christi (“the person of Christ”) in the celebration of the Eucha-rist, must be, like Christ, wholly for Church. He cannot have another bride.

Pope Francis does not seem interested in inventing a new rite in the Church but calls for greater incul-turation of the liturgy in the many varieties of languages and cultures that span the Amazon basin. He wants to accept the symbols and language of native cultures that can be properly adapted, as was done with pagan Greek and Roman culture in the first centuries of Christianity. He also notes that every culture needs to be purified by the gospel, including those of the Amazon. Moreover, he calls for Christians not only to help the poor and protect the environment, but to do it in the context of evangelization. He writes, “An authentic option for the poor and the abandoned, while motivating us to liberate them from material poverty and to defend their rights, also involves inviting them to a friendship with the Lord that can elevate and dignify them...Nor can we be content with a social message. If we devote our lives to their service, to working for the justice and dignity that they deserve, we cannot conceal the fact that we do so because we see Christ in them and because we acknowledge the immense dignity that they have received from God, the Father who loves them with bound-less love.”

Let us pray that the appeal of Pope Francis to the world to link concern for natural ecology to concern for human ecology will be heard and heeded, since “the care of people and the care of ecosystems are insep-arable.”

Live the Liturgy Inspiration for the Week

We desperately need the season of Lent. Have you ever found yourself running in all directions, tired, frustrated, and frazzled and yearning for the moment when you can stop, find some time for reflection and prayer, and get your head straight? Life pulls us in all directions. On top of that, the presence of sin in our lives gives us blurry vision and makes us forget who we really are. We can easily lose touch with God. Lent gives us the opportunity to return to simpler times and clear away some of life’s clutter. We can change up our routines a bit and realize that Jesus is the one who can set us right with God and restore what was originally meant to be. Our task is to avoid the temptations that can weigh us down, distract us, and distort our vision. Are you aware of what things in your life do this to you? Over the next few weeks, you have an opportunity to avoid them.

Come aside for a holy hour of Stations of the Cross, Ex-position, Meditation and Benediction of the Blessed Sac-rament on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. There will be an op-portunity for confession after Benediction. The medita-tion each evening will consider how Jesus exemplified the seven great virtues during his Passion. He perfectly lived the cardinal virtues of Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, Tem-perance, and the theological virtues of Faith, Hope and Love, even in the midst of his suffering. We will consider how he exemplified Prudence this Wednesday. Join us for an evening of prayer and inspiration.

Archdiocese for the Military

Services Collection

The Archdiocese for the Military Services was

established by St. Pope John Paul II in 1985 to

provide a full range of Catholic pastoral minis-

tries to those in the United States Armed Forc-

es, including many individuals and families

who hail from our own Greater Philadelphia

region. A collection will be taken up in our

Archdiocese the weekend of March 7/8, 2020.

We ask for your prayers and generous financial

support for this important collection.

As a reminder, at ABVM our ushers only pass

the basket around once during Mass. If you use

Parish E-giving, you may edit your giving in-

formation at www.faithdirect.net and click

"Edit My Gifts". If you give by using enve-

lopes you can place the gifts to the parish and

to the special collection in the basket at the

same time.
