  • CASE ANALYSIS:

    JOHNNY THEFT

  • Johnny was so hungry that afternoon in school. He forgot his lunchbox at home and he did not

have any money to buy food. Suddenly, he saw a wallet lying on

the floor. He took the wallet and thought to himself, Boy, am I so

lucky or what? Now I can buy some lunch. Something made

him think twice: Oh wait but this is not mine? Nah finders

    keepers.

  • He finally decided to buy some lunch with the money that he got

from the wallet. After eating he heard his classmate, Arthur,

crying. He approached Arthur and asked, Why are you

crying? Arthur answered: I lost my wallet. My mom will get angry

with me because my allowance for the whole month is in that

    wallet.

  • Johnny walked away and finally went home sad after his

classes. He could not eat dinner or sleep that night something

was bothering him. What have I done? I cannot tell Arthur that I

was the one who took his wallet. I might be given a green

slip or put under disciplinary probation. Everyone will think I am a thief. What will happen to Arthur now? What should I do?

  • Discussion Questions

    1. Did Johnny live the true meaning of freedom? Why or why not?

    2. What do you think should Johnny do after he had learned that Arthur was the owner of the wallet?

    3. What helped you in making that decision for number 2? What bothered Johnny for the night?

  • Every person is gifted with freedom so that man can choose what is good.

In the same way, there is a conscience in every human heart that calls man to love

and to do what is good and to avoid evil (CCC 1776) in the right moment.

    WE CONNECT

  • a. WHAT IS CONSCIENCE?

    - A voicein our hearts that helps us to make proper judgment.

    - judges particular choices, approving those that are good and denouncing those that are

    evil.

    - reminds us be sorry for our sins and to make up for the bad things we have done.

  • b. WHEN DO WE LISTEN TO OUR CONSCIENCE?

We listen to our conscience every time we face a situation that calls for a moral decision.

A moral decision involves a choice between what is good

    and what is bad.

  • c. YET, WHAT IF IT IS HARD TO DECIDE?

We ask ourselves: WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?

Always remember that your decision must be out of love for

    yourself, others, and God.

  • d. HOW IS FREEDOM RELATED TO

    CONSCIENCE

Our conscience helps us to use freedom for the good.

When we abuse our freedom and commit sin habitually, it will be harder for us to listen to the

    voice of God in us.

  • WE RESPOND These steps will allow us to examine our situations and to make decisions in order to respond better to our call to goodness. 1.Be aware of ones experience or situation.2.Acknowledge or admit the consequences of ones action or decision.

3.Choose what is good.4.Act ones good choices.

  • Saint to Follow: St. Ignatius of Loyola

    - Did he use his freedom well?

    - Did he follow his conscience?

    - How can we follow his example?
