Greetings from the Pastor First Providence, we greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In so doing, let me say that we are blessed to pause and give praise to God for allowing us to celebrate the establishment of a great church in His name, called First Providence. Lest we forget! It is God’s unmerited favor and mercy that has allowed us to go forth remembering the old landmark of First Providence Baptist Church for one hundred and fifty-three years. Yes! For one hundred and fifty three years God’s unmerited favor, through the precious blood of Jesus, has allowed us to render indelible service to this community and the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). “To God be the glory!”

Now therefore, it is with great pleasure, I pause at such a great time in our rich heritage to extend to you my heart felt love and gratitude as I say, “Happy Anniversary First Providence Church Family.” Yes, it is true! God has allowed us by His grace and mercy to go forth remembering the old landmark through good and bad times. I am so thankful to God that our good times out numbered our bad times. Now! As I extend these words of greetings, I am challenged by the Spirit of God to encourage each of you to join me in taking a stand for God by and through making the 3Ds applicable in our daily walk with Him. We must become gracious in our heart, soul and mind to the extent that we are reminded daily that our Decisions Determines our Destination (3Ds). When our heart, soul and mind are quickens within us to know and apply 3Ds, we will become as Joshua was in the 24th chapter and 15th verse of the book of Joshua. There it is written that Joshua declared, “If serving the Lord seems evil to you, then choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the river, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you now dwell. But for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” In other words, Joshua declared that for me and my house we are remembering the old landmark.

If we are to internalize this mind set, we must make decisions that determines our destination within the kingdom of God regardless of what others say or do in their attempt to hinder us from going forth daily remembering the old landmark. We must make decisions that determine our destination by carefully following the footsteps of our forefathers. Our forefathers took heed to the words recorded in Proverbs 22:28, which read “remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.” As our forefathers went through the fire and through the storms of slavery and injustice; as our forefathers were broken in pieces and often left all alone to die, no doubt many who survived could proudly say, “through it all God kelp us. And, through it all God blessed us because at the end of each painful day we were able go forth remembering the old landmark because we still had a praise inside of us.” Providence, as our forefathers refused to move the old landmarks of not only property boundaries, but the old landmark of moral living; the old landmark of loving and respecting each other; and above all, the old landmark of loving and obeying the word of God, so shall we go forth as we celebrate these one hundred and fifty three years remembering the old landmark so we can continue to give God the praise as our forefathers. To God be the glory! Happy Anniversary! Humbly Submitted, Alexander Pope, Jr. Rev. Dr. Alexander Pope, Jr.

Greetings from the First Lady

Remember the Old Landmark Our ancestors proud, strong and determined Built or purchased many landmarks for us Such as farms, businesses, churches and homes Remember the old landmark. These landmarks are our blessed heritage Where our people established boundary lines Of which they were thankful to their God. Remember the old landmark. Using their hands on each nail and board For no engineer or architect was employed Only with the God given plan in their heads Remember the old landmark. With sweat, calloused hands and minimal help In the cold, in the rain, from sun up to sun down. Day in and day out they worked relentlessly. Remember the old landmark.

Very tired, no management, no high tech desk jobs, Worked hard on land and in homes not their own Every penny wisely saved was used to build. Remember the old landmark. These landmarks were built for us as living stones A treasure to love and keep for generations to come From unselfish hearts that were so pure and true Remember the old landmark.

Greetings from the Morning Guest Minister

Dear Pastor Pope and my First Providence family, Greeting in the precious Name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I want to take this opportunity to say thank you Pastor Pope for the invitation. It is truly my pleasure to come and be with you on the 153rd anniversary of this historic occasion. It is a time for looking back to see from “Whence the Lord has brought us – 153 yrs is a mighty long ways.” – It is also a time to look at the present and access “Where we are now in reference to our spiritual heritage.”

Lastly it is a time to look forward to see “Where the Lord would have us to go.” There are some challenges up ahead: some storms to face, some mountains to climb, some rivers to cross and some giants to take down. But we should not faint nor grow weary, for “Those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and grow weary, they shall walk and not faint” ( Isa. 40: 31). Pastor Pope and First Providence family; pray for God to show us the way and pray for me that the Lord will give me a Word for First Providence on this occasion. I shall be praying for you. Your Servant in Christ, Paul B. Cofer, Pastor Christ Evangelical Baptist Church (I John 5:14-15).

Greetings from the Afternoon Guest Minister

Congratulations to you, Rev. Dr. Pope and the First Providence Baptist Church family on the occasion of your 153rd Church Anniversary Celebration. May you be encouraged to “be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.” (I Corinthians 15:58, NASB). God has planted His Church in the world to fulfill His divine purpose. You have been strategically stationed to be the recipient and channel of God’s manifold blessings. Jesus reminds us in John 15:16, thusly, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.”

“Remembering the Old Landmark” will remind you that your past is glorious, your present is noteworthy and your future is most promising in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who promised never to leave us alone. We are praying for the joy of the Lord to strengthen your God-ordained, Christ-centered and Spirit-filled ministry together as one body of baptized believers in Christ Jesus. Through this intercessory discipline, the peace of God will abide with you; the love of God will embrace you and the Holy Spirit will lead, guide and protect you, even until Jesus comes again. Yours in Christ,

Rev. Clyde Hill, Sr. & the Mount Calvary Baptist Church Family Augusta, GA

Greetings from the Anniversary Committee We, your Anniversary Committee, extend to you our warmest regards as we come together to celebrate one hundred and fifty three years of remembering the old landmark. As we labored intensely to gather and compile the information to make up this year’s anniversary booklet for you, we found it virtually impossible not reflect on how our forefathers had to labor even more intensely to compile their information for the anniversary. Our forefathers did not have computers, copier machine, printers and cellular phones to help make their task easy while preparing the anniversary as we do. For the most part, they only had a typewriter with no correction tape or whiteout but by and through the grace of God they made the best of what they had and got the job done. This, of course, is evident through some of the pages in this booklet that reflect their programs and functions. Many thanks are extended to the late Deacon Jerry Cannon for preserving so much of our old landmark that is recorded in this document. Also we must thank Bro. Antonelli Carter fo restoring the church bell and Deacon Leroy Daniel Brown for taking the photographs found within this document. It is our hope that as you view the pages in this booklet the spirit of our forefathers would enter your mind, soul and heart and stir up the gift in you to go forth remembering the old landmark as they did. To God be the glory.

Biography of Guest Speaker

Rev. Clyde Hill, Sr. is a native of Tallapoosa, Georgia and a Salutatorian graduate of Haralson County High School. He was drafted by the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and served as Chaplain Assistant. Rev. Hill graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Benedict College, Columbia, South Carolina and received a Master of Divinity Degree from ITC (Morehouse School of Religion) in Atlanta, Georgia. While attending Morehouse, he received the National Dean’s List Honor.

Rev. Hill has been a faithful and supportive “son of the house” of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Atlanta, Georgia, since 1965, under the pastorate of the late Dr. S. A. Baker. Rev. Hill is the former pastor of the Greater Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Rome, Georgia, where he served for four years. He was installed as pastor of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Augusta, Georgia on April 8, 1973. Rev. Hill is a God-ordained, prayerfully passionate, and Holy Spirit- led minister; therefore, immediately, he began to shape an active evangelistic agenda that has become the heart of his ministry. He demonstrates a holistic and an impressive leadership at Mount Calvary and has proven himself to be a gospel preacher, an effective teacher, and a caring passionate pastor. As a competent church builder, he led the church in building a new edifice in 1985. As part of Mt. Calvary’s Outreach mission in “Making Christ known by Any Means Necessary,” Rev. Hill’s outreach ministry extends beyond the walls of the church. He can be seen weekly on Thursday night TV broadcast, “From the Pastor’s Study,” which airs on Comcast, Channel 4.

Some of Rev. Hill’s community and professional affiliates include: Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity (Beta Chi Sigma), NAACP, Baptist Ministers Conference of Augusta, Capital Campaign Leadership Team of Augusta Mini Theatre, Inc., and Morehouse School of Religion Board (Received the MSR “Distinguished Alumni Award 2000” in February 2000). Pastor Hill served for more than two decades on several hospital boards: the University Hospital Service Health Board, University Hospital Resource Board, University Hospital Extended Care Board and the Richmond County Hospital Authority Board where he served two terms as Board Chairman. He resigned this position at the end of 2012.

Rev. Hill is an advocate for the advancement of his people through quality education, both Christian and public. He demonstrates this in the founding of the Wm. Hill Memorial Fund for Educational Excellence, Inc. (a scholarship fund under the namesake of his late father, Rev. Wm. Hill). In addition, he founded the Augusta Adult Development Center (a non-profit organization designed to train under-privileged adults for gainful employment through technology and basic educational skills) and founded the Eunicato Hill Publishing Company (created as a medium for promoting and advocating literary production).

Pastor Hill is a genuine advocate for family love, nurturing and enhancement. He is married to the former Louise Browning. Together, they are the proud parents of three children: Norman Vincent (Spouse, Delilah Hill), Clyde, Jr. (Spouse, Deirdre Hill), and Yolonda LaTrese (Spouse, Dexter Cooper) and the proud grandfather (Da-da) of six: Kyle, Lorin, Morgan, Kaela, Meagan, and Macey.

"Remembering the Old Land Mark"Remembering the Old Land Mark"Remembering the Old Land Mark"Remembering the Old Land Mark"

REMOVE NOT THE ANCIENT LANDMARK, WHICH THY OUR FATHERS HAVE SET.

When you view this world through your spiritual eye, there are times when humanity seems as though it is spinning out of control. The things our ancestors taught us are very simple and plain to all of us. We were taught to do everything in order and decently. We were also taught that a man’s word was his bond and the word of God was the Law of the land. These were the principles that laid the foundation of a God fearing home and a rich family life. These principles were the shield against you being consumed when the fire comes. Never eliminate the ancient landmark, which was laid down by our Father; to do so may cause many to become bewildered in what once was

their home. We need to go back to the old landmark.

The principles of our Father taught us that there might be some problems. However, it was always understood that problems are a good sign. Problems indicate that progress is being made, wheels are turning, and we are moving toward our goals. We were always told, to be on guard, be cautious, when you think you have no problems, because that is when you really have a problem. We learned that problems are like our landmarks of progress. We can tell how far we have come by the number of problems we solved as a church family. Solving problems as a church family warrants lifelong association to the Holy Trinity, the ability to communicate to the Holy Trinity, and the will to be obedient to the Holy Trinity. These things make us an enthusiastic, highly flavored, strong church family, and have kept us for one hundred fifty-three years at the old landmark.

If we knew all of the wisdom of our Father and we understood what would happen if we did not follow his word, how did we get to this point? Why is the world in a state of bewilderment about why they are here and not there? Why does everyone seems to be perplexed about the direction they should go, uncertain about who is right or wrong, and confused to the point of taking drugs to escape the real world? We need to go back to the old landmark.

We got to this point because the evil one took control of our desire to make progress God’s way and started showing us shortcuts. He told numerous people that he had a direct route, easier then the customary one, and his way could save time or effort. He used this same trick in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. Terrible things that are done with the excuse that progress requires them are not really progress at all, but just terrible things. Men are exposing themselves, women are wearing men's garments, men are now going to the beauty shop, and women are going to the barbershop. Young ladies

Page 22: First Providence Baptist Church 153rd Church Anniversaryfirstprovidence.org/site/images/153rd Church_Anniversa… ·  · 2013-08-19August 25, 2013 2:00pm Rev. Dr. Alexander Pope,

are not looking for decent young men to marry and to father their children; instead, they are searching for a roughneck (One who is likening unto a thug or who is most likely to be associated with organized crime; he could be in a gang, but not always in a gang). Men are searching for other men to marry, so they can set up homes and try to raise children in what they think is a Godly home. We need to go back to the old landmark.

We spend more time earning a source of revenue to afford what we think is a good life, than teaching our children how to live a good life as children of God. We have made tearing people’s character down by making vicious, personal verbal attacks on them and their family, (in order to stop their ideas from going forward, because they conceived it first), into an art form of character assassination. Once we have destroyed them and humiliated them, we then seek rewards in the form of promotions and salary increases for the job we did in destroying the person’s self -respect and ideas, which could have helped humanity move forward. We need to go back to the old landmark.

We once believed that it took a village to raise a child, but we are now allowing video games and other electronics raise our children. In some cases, I am sad to say, we are letting children raise children. Our neighbors are no longer our acquaintances and friends. They are just the people next door. We do not even know their names. Our homes are like fortresses, because we do not trust anyone. Children in the same neighborhood can no longer play with each other, because they might kill each other for ridiculous reasons. The evil one calls all of this pandemonium, and chaos, “progress”, but this is a trick. Any tricks, behavior, activities that lead to deceitfulness are the practices of the evil one, and those who follow him are just as depraved as the one they adhere to, and worship. We need to go back to the old landmark.

The principles that our Father gave us to live by are not good because they are old. They are old because they are good, and they have been through the fire with the three Hebrew boys; they have been through flood with Noah; they were down in the lion’s den with Daniel; and they have been to cross with Jesus. It was those same principles from our Father that called Jesus from the grave. These are the same principles that our Father has given each of us. Let us not cheat our neighbors and ourselves by moving the ancient boundary markers set up by First Providence’s founding Fathers in 1860, in that little church down by river. The principles given to them by our Father brought them through flood, fire, and the lion’s den of war.

We must return to the old landmark before it is too late for humanity. You can find the old landmark at First Providence Baptist Church; the Church of believers in Father, Son , and Holy Spirit, that has stood for one hundred fifty- three years as an old landmark, like a lighthouse for the lost and confused traveler. For one hundred fifty three years, First Providence has been obedient to the scriptures. The church family has stayed under qualified leadership; gathered regularly for preaching and worship; observed the

biblical sacraments of baptism and Communion; unified by the Spirit; disciplined by holiness; and scattered to fulfill the Great Commission by giving birth to two other churches.

One hundred fifty- three years ago, when God built First Providence down by the river, the evil one built a chapel of propaganda and misrepresentation of the Word. The evil one preached contention, which led to misrepresentation, disagreement, and conflict. He called it a new way of looking at the truth of the Word. This battle for the soul of man does not take place in a building; it takes place in man’s heart. Our church’s existence could have depended on the change of heart in one individual. It was in the mind and soul of that individual that the battle between good and evil was waging, and ultimately won, by principles of the old landmark; established by the one who created heaven and earth; the one who has never forsaken the righteous nor let their children beg for bread. The battle was won in 1860, but the war will rage on until the day the Lamb returns to claim his church. There were many other battles won over the one hundred fifty three years of our existence, with one person holding the key to victory or defeat. It is imperative that we go back to the old landmark, so when your day comes in the battle of good or evil, and you will have the key to victory in your heart, you will be ready to take a stand (Saints Trusting And Never Doubting) for God’s victory in the battle.

Hold on to your inheritance; hold on to your legacy; know that you can stand on the assurances and word of God. Every promise and every word of God is a landmark for us to look to that will keep us on the right track or guide us when we are unable to find our way. Proverbs 22:28 and 23:10 urge us not to remove these landmarks. Take note of God’s promises on a daily basis and stay close to the old landmark.

This year, the male chorus was awakened to a new life, like the mythical Phoenix bird being called from the ashes of forgotten and useless. The male chorus began to sing the old-fashioned way. The same way our ancestors sang songs of praise and worship, they sing without the aid of musical instruments. Under the instruction of Minister Walter Scott, the male chorus has found new life at the old landmark. The male chorus is under the ministry of Men In Christ and all men are welcome to come and sing praises to the Lord with the Men in Christ.

The beauty of a woman is not only in her facial mode, nor in the curvature of her body, nor the length of her hair, nor the softness of her skin, nor in abilities to complete obligations. The genuine beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. Her splendor is in the caring that she lovingly bestows to others. It is in the passion that she shows to those that feel detached and indifferent from the main stream of life. Her true beauty can be observed in her thoughtfulness. Her kind, gentle words are appealing to all who feel as though they have no place to call their home. Those few words give hope and faith to a weary traveler. The beauty of such a woman can always be seen at the old landmark. This

kind of beauty becomes more attractive with the passing of time. This kind of beauty cannot be bought or surgically implanted. This kind of beauty is a gift from God. Mrs. Cynthia Green possesses this kind of beauty. This is why she was elected to represent the state of South Carolina in a contest sponsored by the National Association of Ministers’ and Pastors’ Wives.

To be Ms First Providence you must possess certain properties that are pleasing not only to the sight of the mind, but also pleasing to the spirit of the old landmark known as First Providence Baptist Church. Some of the properties that Ms. First Providence must possess are elegance, intelligence, and attitude of excellence. She must be able to unite the disciples of the church to follow her and support her in her endeavors to represent First Providence Baptist Church and all of the churches in the Mt. Canaan Association. She may take her lesson from a box of crayons, where you will find many different colors with many different names; some of them are sharp; some of them are dull; some of them are pretty; and some of them are odd; but they all live together in the same box. Moreover, when the box closes, the name on the box for all differences that may exist in the box is still “crayons”. Mrs. Nicole Jarvis has all of these properties. She also has beauty that captures your attention and a personality that captures your heart. She is the wife of Mr. Andres Jarvis and the mother of Theron and Le'landra Jarvis. Mrs. Nicole Jarvis has kept it real, and made everyone proud that she did not think it was robbery to represent this church family as Ms. First Providence.

At First Providence Church Baptist Church, a tennis star is born in the form of Ivan Smith. This young Arthur Ashe led the Academy of Richmond County High School to victory in the first round of the state AAAA high school championship. Mr. Smith understands the teaching of the old landmark. He knows that church family is forever and tennis is just a game. He also recognizes that you must stay in the hands of God, use what He has given you, and do all that you can to please Him. This is a great plan for success for any young person to follow.

Lucifer has influenced many of his followers that in order to be recognized they must do something great, something out of the ordinary, before someone will give them honor and recognition. What he does not understand is that God’s glory and success are in the details. If he had taken the time to look back at the old landmark, he would have found that we cannot do what God has not yet blessed, to be done. If we do it before He has blessed it, we spend a lot of time doing nothing. The evil one should have learned that life is made, not of great sacrifices or duties, but of little things, in which smiles, kindness, and small obligations, given routinely, are what wins and preserves the heart of man, and secure comfort in paradise. Our Man and Woman of the year, Antonelli and Rita Carter, heard the voice of the Lord a long time before they were named Man and

Woman of the Year. Together they have taken care of the small things around the old landmark, which have allowed others to take care of some other important small things.

The ability to select and maintain the right people who will project things you are trying to accomplish, is a talent that is not present in everyone. Some may think that only vision and strategy will make you successful, but you must have the ability to select the right people. A captain of a ship can have the best battle plans, but if he has no sailors to sail the ship, his plans are useless. Effective leaders use customer service to ensure customer satisfaction, retention, and financial growth. They understand that you must treat God’s people the way that you want God to treat you. Mrs. Angela Broadwater practices this business model in her daily operation of the First Providence Baptist Church Learning and Development Center. She has been named Aiken County Director of the Year.

It matters not the size of a body with an unwavering spirit inside of it, the kind of spirit, which has an unquenchable fire of faith. This is the kind of faith that tells you that you can do all things through God. A person with this kind of fire locked up in his bones can alter the course of history through the will of God. This is the kind of spirit you find at the old landmark, and this is the kind of spirit you will find in Rev. Dr. Alexlander Pope Jr., South Carolina Man of the Year for 2012 - 2013. Pastor Pope is a strong believer in fact that he is a battleship for the Lord and he can win battles if he is anchored at the dock. He must go where the people are who need to hear a word from God, to help beat back the evil one. He must go out on the high seas of misfortune to rescue God’s people. It is because he is a battleship for the Lord, wounded and scarred by the many battles he has played a part in as a Captain for the Lord, that he was selected to receive this great tribute.

Take me back dear Lord, to a time when we set on the mourning bench and your sweet holy spirit entered into us and in the joy of the Lord shone all around us. Take me back dear Lord, to the old landmark, where your words were clear and understood by all; where your neighbor was truly a neighbor and a man's word was his bond. Take me back dear Lord, to the old landmark; where men were men, and women were women, and children respected their elders. Take me back dear Lord, to the old landmark, where even the town drunkard began to straighten up before he got in the presence of the church. We thank you Lord, for the progress that we have made. We thank you Lord, for where you have brought us. Nevertheless, Lord, if we are going to make the present age a place for your Holy Spirit to dwell in, then dear Lord, we need to bring the spirit of the old landmark forward.

Let us all go back to the old landmark Let us all go back to the old landmark Let us all go back to the old landmark and then stay in the service of the Lord.

Let us kneel in prayer in the old time way Let us kneel in prayer in the old time way Let us kneel in prayer in the old time way and He'll be near us, He will hear us We'll be given, bread from heaven He will feed us until we want no more. Preachers preach the word in the old time way preachers preach the word in the old time way Let us preach the word in the old time way Tell the story of His glory, it will warn me It will turn men and will save this world from sin and shame

Let us blend our voices in the old time way Let us blend our voices in the old time way Let us blend our voices in the old time way Common meter, yes they're sweeter When you stop singing, they'll keep ringing, they'll keep lingering way down in your soul

First Providence Baptist Church Learning & Development Center

Dear Church Family.

In the midst of difficult economic times and the ensuing impacts, we invite you to celebrate a year of accomplishments with the staff of the First Providence Learning & Development Center (LDC).

Since opening our center in 1996, we have had a growing number of children in our program to enter as infants and continue through their preschool years. We believe these children are prepared for great success in life. This year we share the story of Derek Bussey, Stephen Copeland and Robert “Robbie” Morgan, Jr. as evidence of the difference that early care and education programs really make. FPLDC had a hand in their early development and we are happy to see them graduating high school this year and going on to college…all on scholarships!

The dedicated staff of the LDC, under the direction of Deaconess Angela Broadwater, has worked diligently to attain and maintain a high quality program.

We invite you to become a part of the LDC family. While financial support and referrals are much needed and greatly appreciated, we offer a number of volunteer opportunities as well. Help us continue to make a difference.

Sincerely,

Angela Broadwater, Director

Salute to Our Staff

“Hands that serve-hearts that care” can certainly be found in abundance at the LDC. While our staff is not unique in the field of early learning, we do believe they help to set the bar for excellence. We wholeheartedly believe that “relationships matter.” All staff continuously work to foster positive relationships with each child and his/her family. We would like you to join us in recognizing these individuals and the outstanding job that they do.

Rev. Dr. Alexander Pope, Jr., CEO Mrs. Angela Broadwater, Director

Lindie Aaron Maggie Brown Ja’Quanta Brown Kirk Cofer Sara Cofer Patricia Cook Tamatha Graham Shavettor Green

The LDC staff continues to attend training sessions to keep them knowledgeable of the many changes in their field, in an effort to continue to provide parents and students of the LDC with quality childcare and education. Director, Deaconess Angela Broadwater, has continued to attend Directors’ forums in Graniteville through Aiken County First Steps. The sessions have been very informative and allow for many networking opportunities with both current and future partners. Sis. Broadwater’s efforts have been recognized in many ways this year, most notably in her being asked to serve on the Board of Directors for Aiken County First Steps. We could not do our job without the help and support of our church family and community. We would like to take this time to recognize Friends of the LDC who give, not only of their financial resources, but of their time to ensure our mission is met. Many volunteer, but these individuals go the extra mile, having a deep love and concern for the center as a whole. We thank you from the depths of our hearts for being a blessing to all who come through our doors.

Spotlight Angela Broadwater

Aiken County First Steps Month of the Young Child

Director of the Year!

Nominator’s Comments: Treating every child as an individual with individual needs, Angela Broadwater has successfully used this strategy as Director of FPLDC for the past 8 years. Her prior experience as a pre-school teacher plays valuable role in her current role as administrator. The principles of “community” and “encouragement” are emphasized and demonstrated daily in her leadership. Angela possesses a unique ability to reach her neediest families while creating a holistic environment to promote full development of the children in her care. Parents feel comfortable coming to her for just about anything and she does her best to assist them whenever possible. Her organization, patience and perseverance are traits that others should strive to have. Under her leadership, FPLDC became a licensed childcare center and was approved to be able to accept ABC vouchers, providing a safe place for children in families who cannot afford childcare without assistance but are in need of it to make a living. Each year, the 4 year olds look forward to their first of many graduations, and that is always a great experience for the parents and children.

Congrats Sis. Broadwater!

Establishment of First Providence Foundation 29841, Inc. is accredited to Reverend Dr. Alexander Pope, Jr. An area consisting of Barton Road, Boylan Street, Burnside Avenue, and Metz Drive located in North Augusta, SC has been known as the Carrsville Community for many generations. Community residents, city leaders, and other organizations has voiced concerns in reference to “run down” and abandoned homes in this area along with other concerns. Reverend Dr. Alexander Pope, Jr., Pastor of First

Providence Baptist Church responded to these concerns by developing the Carrsville Education and Community Revitalization Project. First Providence Foundation 29841, Inc. was incorporated by the State of South Carolina on March 3, 2006. First Providence Foundation received an advance ruling as a tax exempt 501 (c) (3) Public Charity organization on July 9, 2008. The purpose of the foundation is to manage the Carrsville Education and Community Revitalization Project, which will assist recovering alcoholics, drug addicts, former incarcerated persons, and needy families as well as unemployed persons in becoming solvent and productive citizens in the local community. Housing and employment opportunities will be provided to the indigents in conjunction with skills for becoming productive and self sufficient citizens in the community. First Providence Foundation has held two (2) annual golf tournaments since being incorporated. All proceeds from the tournaments were used to carry out the Foundation program initiatives such as property renovations. The Foundation is applying for grants to assist with the renovation of property. The Hill family was the first property owners to make a property donation agreement with First Providence Foundation. An agreement was next made with the Pearson and Cook families. The Hill, Pearson and Cook families grew up in the Carrsville Community. The property being donated is located in the Carrsville Community. Donating land is one way a person can leave a lasting gift to help preserve their community. Since the establishment of the First Providence Foundation and in conjunction with the South Carolina State Housing Authority more than $100,000 have been dispersed to assist with the elderly and low income home repairs in Aiken, Barnwell, and Edgefield Counties. To meet the mandate of constructing out first transitional home in the Carrsville area, the Foundation organized and sponsored its first Gospel Festival which was held on the River front of the Savannah River on August 17, 2013. It was a great success and we thank all who supported us in this worthy cause. The First Providence Foundation will continue to take aggressive actions to chart its future as we march foreword to meet the mandate given to us by almighty God.
