From Co-Pastors Curtis Fussell and Emily Wilmarth
FAREWELL
I have agonized about how to say goodbye to you. One of my curses is a desire to leave
everything neat and tidy. It’s a desire that leads me to want closure with each one of you,
but I’m not strong enough for that. Furthermore, in my saner moments I realize that there
simply is no way to excise oneself neatly from a relationship without leaving a bit of a scar.
So the best that I’ve been able to come up with is that I will bear the scar of leaving
you, but I will do it with gratitude. As I said to the Session, we have had a great ride these
past five and a half years, and we have accomplished together more than I ever dreamed we
would. For that and for you, I give thanks to God.
Someone told me years ago that a Christian is called to hold lightly to those people
and things that are transitory and to hold tightly to Jesus Christ. I believe those are words of
wisdom.
You may be aware that the word goodbye is really a contraction of the words God be
with you. From time to time in our lives some trace of that original meaning shimmers
through. This is for me one of those times.
God’s richest blessings to you all!
Lee
H ow good and pleasant it is when God’s
people live together in unity! – Psalm
133:1 How good and pleasant it is to join you
all in Highlands! We give great thanks for the
warm, enthusiastic welcome we have received
since beginning our ministry with you. We are
excited to be here and ready to get our feet on
the ground. Thanks for your grace in remind-
ing us of your names as we get to know you!
We want to ask you to walk alongside us as
we determine the specific ways we will share
this co-pastorate. As you may know, there are
relatively few models from which we can bor-
row, so while we will call upon our colleagues
in and around the denomination, we will also
be prayerfully discerning together and with the
Session how we can best use our spiritual gifts
in partnership as we lead the congregation.
To start, we will be sharing preaching equally
with Lee through July 20th, and then will
preach from the lectionary on alternative Sun-
days through the summer season. We will also
alternate moderating Session month by month.
We’ll both be involved in getting to know the
dynamics of our fantastic ministry teams.
We’ll share pastoral care responsibilities as
they arise. Both of us are dedicated in our
daily prayer lives to lift up YOU, this kind,
generous, faithful congregation.
In Peace,
Emily & Curtis

SONSHINE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
W e have had a great year in Sonshine School! It was so exciting to see the steady growth in our students!
While they worked hard, they are also happy to have a well-deserved break for summer.
By August we will be anticipating another school year, and the students will be meeting their new teachers and
making new friends.
Valerie and I are grateful to all of you who have volunteered in the Sonshine program. We hope you all have a
great summer!
Mozelle Edwards

T raditional Sunday School just not your thing? Looking for a fun group of men and women in a cas-
ual atmosphere to share thoughts and insights about your Christian walk? We have just the thing
for you!! Starting Tuesday, July 1st there is a new Christian book club, and we are moving “Beyond The
Walls” and into the community. The group will meet every Tuesday at 3 P.M. at The Dog House (the
restaurant of The Ugly Dog) to discuss a Christian short story. Our first compilation is The Best Chris-
tian Short Stories edited by Bret Lott and includes short stories by contemporary authors such as Lott,
Homer Hickam, Erin McGraw and more. Because we will be discussing a different short story every
week, you can attend as you are able without committing your entire summer. There are a limited num-
ber of books available to borrow from the church library or you may download a copy on your own e-
reader. Please see or call Sheryl James (482-1241) or Darlene Scott (787-2219) if you are interested in
joining in this fun adventure as we move First Presbyterian BEYOND THE WALLS!
D id you know in WNC up to 10% of the population is homeless? Children are reported to make up 83% of the homeless popula-
tion. The state ranks WNC as having the highest number of child abuse and neglect cases as well as the highest poverty rates in
the state. Our children need your help.
Hawthorn Heights is the only homeless shelter in Western North Carolina. The current facility isn’t large enough; it is cramped and not
safe. Barium Springs has purchased a new home that needs remodeling and construction, which is 6400 square feet instead of the cur-
rent facility which is 2300 square feet. By moving we will be able to expand the program and provide better living conditions for chil-
dren.
Too often these children have nowhere to go once they turn 18. An independent living program would resolve that issue. Phase One of
the project is to move the teens into the new larger shelter. Then Phase Two is to transform the current facility to an independent living
shelter for teens who have aged out of the program so that they can gain life skills and support to begin their careers and/or education.
About the shelter:
In 1992, it became the first federally funded Runaway and Homeless Youth Basic Center Program in the state west of Ashe-
ville. The program has continually maintained this status.
Since 1984, Hawthorn Heights has served over 1,700 youth. It is constantly at capacity.
Referral reasons can include homelessness, running away from home, truancy, delinquency, abuse, and neglect.
Donations can be sent to Barium Springs, Attention Katie Queen, at P.O. Box 99 Webster, NC 28788. Barium Springs is a 501 (c)(3)
non-profit organization. For more information or to take a tour, please contact Katie Queen at 828-231-5413 or

I t’s that time of year again when Preschoolers become Kindergarteners. They have spent the
past year learning letters, numbers and colors not to mention how to take turns, raise your
hand to be called on and how to sit still for ANY length of time. Most importantly, they’ve
learned that God loves them and so does their church family. They’ve attended Wednesday
church, Tuesday Bible story time and Ms. Angie’s music lessons every week. The Women’s
Study group will be making sure they each have a Bible at graduation with their name too.
Many of them now call First Presbyterian their church!
Now you have the opportunity to show these precious children what having a church family
really means. Graduation is set for Tuesday, July 29th at 6 P.M. in the sanctuary. It promises to
be a fun evening, with lots of smiling faces and I can assure you the church will be filled with a
Joyful Noise as the children perform a program of songs which they have learned during the
year. Please come and celebrate as we send our First Presbyterian “Youth Group” off to the
next phase of their education.
Graduation Time Already?
T he Just for You Relay For Life of Highlands team needs YOU! After 13 years of working for and
donating over $250,000 to the American Cancer Society, the team as you have known us is retir-
ing as of August 9, 2014. Before we go, however, we still need YOU—your household items and any-
thing else except clothes for our August 2 Giant Yard Sale. We further welcome cash/check donations
to ACS, luminarias to light the path for the cure at our Relay Event on Friday, August 8, or business
sponsorships. We can’t reach our goal of $10,000 without YOU. Thank you for your 13 years of sup-
port. We have felt honored to work for each of you: Survivor, Struggler, Succumbed (Remembered),
Servant (Caregiver), Spared.
Call Don and Betty at 787-2324 for pickup of goods. THANK YOU!

Beautiful Blooms
Summer has finally come to the mountains of Highlands. Our seasonal
members and friends have returned and old acquaintances are renewed. So think of honoring a loved one with a beautiful
arrangement of fresh flowers. You may do so by signing the flower calendar and
filling out a flower leaflet. Please take the completed form to
the office so that your flower re-quest can be finalized.
Following the 11:00 service each week, and on July
27th after the 8:30service, Marty Boone will be taking
casual pictures for the new directory that we will be
creating in-house this year. You don’t need to be a
member to be included in the directory; we would love
to include the many seasonal friends of the church.
Please meet near the piano after the service and she will
snap a quick picture that you may review on the spot. If
you are a new member within the last year and are
happy with the picture of you that appeared in the news-
letter just let us know and we will use that photo.
